SURE TO BE A FAVORITE!, February 23, 2001
This review is from: Teddy Bears' Mother Goose (Hardcover)
Los Angeles born artist Michael Hague has won the hearts of countless children and parents with his warm, fanciful illustrations of such popular books for young readers as "The Wind In The Willows," "The Velveteen Rabbit," and "The Secret Garden."
Crediting much of his early inspiration to Disney characters, Mr. Hague has said he decided to become an artist after watching the Mickey Mouse Club on television. It is true that one finds vivacity in the paintings of both artists, but Mr. Hague remains very much an original as is seen in the delightful "Teddy Bears' Mother Goose."
Beginning with the kindly, plump Mother Goose bear in bonnet and nose specs, we meet the old bear who lives in a shoe with "so many cubs she didn't know what to do." Peter pumpkins eater's wife waves contentedly from her pumpkin shell, and Little Bear Blue, with mouth fallen open, snoozes in the haystack.
The height of comic art is reached with a pathetically slim Jack Sprat bear and his overfed wife. It's impossible to choose a favorite among these traditional rhymes sparkling with uniquely lovable illustrations, which simply means that this is a book that will be enjoyed over and over again
