Pendergrass On The Rise,
By
This review is from: Teddy Pendergrass: Teddy! Live in '79 (DVD)
This concert footage from February 1979 shows a rising virtuoso mastering song and audience as few have ever done. After leaving Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes in the mid-1970's, Teddy Pendergrass embarked on a stellar solo career that saw him become the first African American male to garner 5 consecutive platinum albums (remember albums?). His meteoric rise was cut short by a tragic car accident in March 1982 that left him confined to a wheelchair. Just before his accident, however, Pendergrass had so mastered his craft that he was widely being called the Black Elvis. Female fans of all races surrendered to his machismo. Midway between the beginning of his solo career and his accident, he entertains us with unbridled passion and a thoughtful show put together for the visual as as much as the music. The star is in fine voice as he sings a medley of hits from his days with Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, as well as hits form his albums. He even adds a bonus track, a soulful rendition of the hit "All By Myself." For those looking to see what soul music is all about, purchase this DVD. It is to be played over and over and over again.

Teddy was Badd during his prime,
This review is from: Teddy Pendergrass: Teddy! Live in '79 (DVD)
Teddy Pendergrass was running things back in the day for a while. He is underrated to me because you see a Cat who had a rawness in his musical presentation, but had a voice that struck a chord. this concert shows a Artist in his prime&very much in tune with his audeince.the Chicks back in the day especially around my old hood loved them some Teddy P. the fellas respected his voice&he also had songs that were direct&to the point just as his vocal presentation.

Teddy Pendergrass was one of the last great voices in R&B before the genre went belly up in the eighties. Teddy delivered both suave and gritty Soul in an era when disco and radio formats started to reign. His performances were at the same time highly erotic and uninhibited macho. With his mighty and gruff pipes he blew away the competition but could be very tender as well. Teddy is best known for his silky albums but was a mean live performer to boot. So naturally any live DVD should be welcomed. But as with many DVD releases of classic Soul artists this release just doesn't suffice. Although I wouldn't want to argue about the quality of the material that is there, which is exhilarating, it just isn't enough. This release features only eight songs and very little interesting bonus material. I guess we'll have to do with this very meager release. But I keep hoping for a DVD that does Teddy justice.

As an ole skool fan of Teddy, I was very pleased to see him in his prime!! I highly recommend this DVD for any Teddybear fan..it's a must.
The only draw back I can say, is that it's not enough of his better hits, Love TKE, Come and go with me...etc. That still being said, I totally enjoyed this DVD. I hope to see others in the future!!

If you haven't got a chance to see T.P. perform live (like so many of us) you won't be dissapointed. This is a must have for any old school R&B fan. Teddy wows with his vocal abilities and his performance, there is also a couple of times in which he plays percussions. If you've heard the live album that he released back in the day you would think that this is the same performance but it's not. It just goes to show the consistant nature of a great performer. Teddy sounds just like all of his recordings and the TP GROWL is effortless!

This is probably the best Teddy P. concert DVD out. He does all the hits he had out at the time. I didn't realize what a great showman he was. It was clear that every woman in the audience felt like he was singing directly to them. Sound and video quality are good as you can expect. Not 5:1, but it's in stereo and sounded good on my home theatre system. If you like Teddy P., don't miss this.

Teddy P in his prime!,

As a little fella when Teddy was in his prime, I never had the chance to see him in concert. After his passing, I decided to buy this DVD to see what he was like. It was surreal for me because I had never seen him perform (only recollection of him was in the wheelchair)..I was blown away. His artistry and performance on that night in Lake Tahoe when this footage was recorded was nothing less than spectacular. Teddy P wowed me even more with his rendition of "All By Myself".....When they say a singer can sing anything, he truly proved it with "All By Myself". I never liked that song before but after hearing him do his version of it, I have fallen in love with it. Teddy's "Blue Notes Medley" was a stroke of genius. I really enjoyed the liberties he took with "Wake Up Everybody" and decided to display his percussion skills on the timbales (I learned later that he was originally a drummer). You also witness a woman throwing underwear on stage when he performs "Somebody Love You Back"....ROFL
I think I have seen this DVD 100 times and still enjoy it like I have seen it for the first time. This was also a great musical history lesson for my children. This is a MUST HAVE! Also, purchase his book "Truly Blessed". It's a real page turner. |
