Interesting illustrated history,
By Norway Mom (Oslo area) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Teddy Roosevelt - Pbk (Paperback)
I read this book aloud with my boys (age 8-1/2 and 12). We enjoyed learning about Roosevelt as a child and young man -- how people lived during those times, and how his early experiences influenced his later accomplishments. Nearly all the books in this series talk about the person's challenges with chronic illness or learning disorders, which we find inspiring. In this case, Teddy had asthma.
The book has illustrations on each two-page spread, and yet the content is not simple. The vocabulary and reading level seem in fact fairly advanced (a bit too advanced in one spot: "In fact, the allotment plan became a permanent part of the United States military payroll system."). Thus, I would recommend the book for good readers who like books with lots of illustrations or who get discouraged by too much text on one page. I would also recommend the book for reading aloud to kids who are interested in history. I would not recommend the book for kids to read by themselves if they struggle with long sentences and big words. |
