Familiar Tunes All - But Nicely Presented, October 30, 2007
This review is from: Teen Ballads Glory Days of Rock N Roll (Audio CD)
In the midst of their massive Rock `n' Roll Era, Your Hit Parade, and Big Band mail-order only series which got under way some 12-15 years ago, Time-Life/Warner Special Productions came out with the start of a sub-series around 1999 under the generic heading The Glory Days Of Rock 'N' Roll, each with a sub-title indicating the theme of the volume in question.
I'm not certain as to the extent of that series but, in addition to this volume (all of which are becoming increasingly hard to find), other sub-titles I know for certain are: One Hit Wonders 1; One Hit Wonder 2; Dance Party; Doo Wop; Doo Wop Oldies But Goodies; Girl Group Sound; Golden Classics; Golden Groups; Great Love Songs; Great Rockers; Great Vocals; Hard-To-Find Hits; Instrumentals; Legendary Artists; New Orleans; # 1 Hits; R&B Classics; R&B Legends; Rockabilly; and Teen Idols.
The selections shown in the Product Description above do not tell you the artists so I have listed them hereunder, together with chart details:
Disc 1: 1) Teen Angel - Mark Dinning (# 1 Billboard Pop Hot 100/# 5 R&B early 1960 on MGM; 2) Just A Dream - Jimmy Clanton & His Rockets (# 1 R&B/# 4 Hot 100 late summer 1958 on Ace; 3) Image Of A Girl - The Safaris (# 6 Hot 100 summer 1960 on Eldo; 4) Born Too Late - The Poni-Tails (# 7 Hot 100/# 11 R&B September 1958 on ABC-Paramount); 5) Last Kiss - J. Frank Wilson & The Cavaliers (# 2 Hot 100 fall 1964 on Josie); 6) 'Til - The Angels (# 14 Hot 100 late 1961 on Caprice; 7) Suspicion - Terry Stafford (# 3 Hot 100 spring 1964 on Crusader; 8) I Love How You Love Me - The Paris Sisters (# 5 Hot 100 fall 1961 on Gregmark; 9) Cathy's Clown - The Everly Brothers (# 1 Hot 100 for 5 weeks/# 1 R&B early summer 1960 on Warner); 10) Angel Baby - Rosie & The Originals (# 5 Hot 100/R&B early 1961 on Highland); 11) Tell Laura I Love Her - Ray Peterson (# 7 Hot 100 summer 1960 on RCA Victor); 12) Patches - Dickie Lee (# 6 Hot 100/# 10 R&B fall 1962 on Smash); 13) Oh Julie - The Crescendos (# 4 R&B/# 5 Hot 100 early 1958 on Nasco); 14) Vavy Blue - Diane Renay (# 1 Adult Contemporary (AC)/# 6 Hot 100 early 1964 on 2-th Century); 15) You Don't Know What You've Got (Until You Lose It) - Rl Donner (# 4 Hot 100 summer 1961 on Gone).

For those familiar with the music of that era you will recognize most, if not all of these tunes instantly, and realize that they have since been released on countless other such compilations. But if what you're looking for is listed, then rest assured these are the originals, and with wonderful clarity of sound, augmented by informative background notes and discography of contents. Several nice photos of some of the artists are also included.

Songs for Teenagers, November 26, 2008
This review is from: Teen Ballads Glory Days of Rock N Roll (Audio CD)
Glory Days of Rock N Roll: Teen Ballads is a two CD set that is one hour, eighteen minutes, and thirty-eight seconds long. I am guessing the songs on this CD are targeted to teenagers. Some of the artists on the set are older then 19 years. That being the cut-off age for a teenager. Some of the songs are tear jerker and the others are love songs. Almost half the artists on this set are female and five of the songs have a female as the name of the title song. Nine of the thirty songs went to number one with Cathy's Clown by The Everly Brothers at the longest for five weeks. Glory Days of Rock N Roll: Teen Ballads gets an AAAA++++.
