Gr 9 Up--Berman addresses diet, acne, constipation, headaches, weight loss, allergies, colds, viruses, PMS, fatigue, hair loss, and mental performance, and targets refined sugar and flour, processed oils, and dairy products as the main culprits. He bases his text on Jewish natural health remedies and the writings of Maimonides. His writing style is informative and entertaining. His ``cures'' are written in prescriptive terms, despite a brief cautionary note in the opening pages to consult a physician for personal diagnosis and care. Many of the author's views are self-admittedly unorthodox, such as his belief that 20% of acne problems stem from chronic constipation. James Gordon's Holistic Medicine (Chelsea, 1988) takes a more objective look at the techniques, practitioners, and role of the patient in natural medicine. Kathleen McCoy and Charles Wibbelsman's The New Teenage Body Book (Berkley, 1992) is more traditional in its treatments of adolescent health. Gail B. Slap and Martha M. Jablow's Teenage Health Care (Pocket, 1994) provides broad coverage of physical, psychological, health, behavioral, and sexual issues, and Charles Salter's The Nutrition-Fitness Link (Millbrook, 1993) deals with food, diet, and nutrition as they pertain to general physical fitness and mental performance. Berman takes a clear stand against the use of antibiotics, offering natural alternative remedies for maladies such as urinary tract and ear infections, and worms or other internal parasites. For this reason, his book should be recommended with caution.
