STILL THE GREATEST BAND ON EARTH,
By dan ryan (NEW YORK) - See all my reviews

I'VE COME TO REALIZE THAT MOST SCREECHING WEASEL FANS WILL NEVER LIKE ANY OF THE MORE RECENT ALBUMS, ESPECIALLY THE ONES AFTER THE DEPARTURE OF VAPID AND PANIC. DARE I SAY THAT SCREECHING WEASEL MAY BE BETTER NOW THAN THEY EVER WERE! IT'S TRUE FOLKS. THE LAST ALBUM, EMO, IS THE GREATEST ALBUM I HAVE EVER HEARD AND I EXPECTED A STRONG FOLLOW UP TO IT. AFTER A LONG ANTICIPATED WAIT, I HAD "TEEN PUNKS IN HEAT" IN MY HANDS AND SINCE THEN ITS BEEN IN MY CD PLAYER NON STOP ALONG WITH THE NEW JETS TO BRAZIL ALBUM. THIS CD IS ALONG THE LINES OF A MIX BETWEEN "TELEVISION CITY DREAM" AND "MY BRAIN HURTS". YOU'VE GOT ANGRY QUICK SONGS SIMULAR TO TUNES ON TVCD AND SILLY LOVE SONGS LIKE "PAULINE" THAT REMIND YOU OF THE CLASSIC ALBUMS "MY BRAIN HURTS" AND "ANTHEM". TO TOP IT OFF, THE NEW ALBUM HAS SONGS MORE IN THE LYRICAL STYLE OF EMO AS WELL. WEASEL HAS PUT OUT ANOTHER PUNK MASTERPIECE. DON'T MISS IT!

This probably deserves 2 and-a-half, maybe three stars. Maybe. The whole thing sounds to me like "Well, we've(I've)got these songs, they're rehearsed, we have a label, let's record them". That's about it, no real emotional attachment to or involvement with the material. I'm a long time Weasel fan too, but these songs just don't stay with me. Television City Dream is more memorable, and that's saying something. This one sounds a little fatter though, but that's cold comfort. I can't honestly say I wouldn't have put this record out though, there are no Ghandis or Albert Schweitzers in the music industry, Fugazi included, and everybody takes a dive now and again.

pathetic regression,

Screeching Weasel is one of America's great punk bands, but here Ben Weasel just embarasses himself. There are some good songs, but not many, and it's the puerile, moronic songs like Erection and I Just Wanna F*** that ruin this album. How can the same guy who wrote thoughtful, intelligent songs like A New Tomorrow and Celena commit this junk to record? It's not that I'm offended by vulgarity, but these songs just come off as the work of the same frat-boy mentality that Weasel has always transcended. Even when the material avoids this stupidity, it sounds tired and worn, like Ben is just going through the motions. Stick with classics like Anthem For a New Tomorrow or Emo, and avoid this at all costs. It is not representative of a band capable of much, much better.

Same Old, Same Old,

This is very good, but, like Television City Dream, it is loud and fast without much in the way of catchy melodies or emotional urgency. Ben shows signs of progress in albums like Bark Like a Dog or Emo, only to again do warmed over versions of the music of his youth. The last great punk album by this band is How To Make Enemies: since then, Ben Weasel has shown that he is able to write great pop songs, but negative reactions from the dumb punk rockers he claimes to despise ensure that he returns over and over to this tired, weak and formulatic mindless psuedopunk.

A new classic.,

This is a very good LP. If you've never heard this band before, buy either this or My Brain Hurts, you won't be dissapointed. Many of their other albums have a more aquired taste. Even with only two of five original members left, they still manage to have the same basic sound, the only thing I miss is their old drummer. The new one's very good, but it seems like he's using the same drum part for every song... almost robotic like drumming...

Save the worst for last?,
This review is from: Teen Punks in Heat (Audio CD)
By all means, this is not a bad album, only their weakest of all. I've always thought of SW as being incapable of releasing a bad album. But they most definitely have seemed to died down in catchiness. Not only are the tunes simple and straight-forward, but they seem to have reveled a darker side of their traditional emotion, with songs such as I'll Stop The Rain and You're Sorry Now. Some have awkward chord progressions or melodies, such as Erection, or mediocre melodies such as Cat-Like and Pauline. The Edge of the World is among the best. Still, there was no need to end with an additional full-length album, and I believe Thank You Very Little would have been an excellent farewell album. This was still decent though.

without calling this album "mature" , its great from start to finish with the the usual sing-alongs,tight music, and i still feel assaulted by the drums and heaviness , winding down with the ending tune.guys that are hard on ben, come on,cut the guy some slack, while he said we become what we hate, give him credit for becoming maybe a tad more serious/open but still rockin'.

I reviewed this album a while ago and painted it in bad light. It's a very good album. The first two songs "bottom of the 9th" and "gotta Girlfriend" are some of the best Weasel songs put down on paper. I think it's the best one since "Anthems" I highly recommend.
If you don't know who Screeching Weasel is check out, "My brian hurts and "anthems for a new tomorrow" cool

SW is Still Awesome!,

I hear alot of people complaining about how Screeching Weasel has changed and blah blah blah. I don't care what anyone says, they are still one of the best bands out there and this CD is really great. Theres alot of angrier sounding stuff on this CD which is really cool to hear, and theres also more "typical" SW songs, like "Message In A Beer Bottle" (one of my favorites, the lyrics are great!). If you liked the last few SW CD's you'll love this one.
