Book Description

April 2002

Believing that Wisdom is found in many faiths that offer fresh ways to connect with God, best-selling anthologist June Cotner has filled these pages with over 150 thoughts, poems, and prayers that will help you through the tough times, encourage you through challenges, and inspire you to achieve your goals.

Teen writers, including Nadia Kourehdar, and such revered spiritual leaders as Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, and the Dalai Lama have important words to share about friends, family, emotions, spirituality, love, and other concerns of daily life -- words for the heart and soul.

These reflections, often expressed as deeply personal con with God, will help you understand and express versations with your own innermost joys, doubts, and longings.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-An anthology of more than 150 short poems and quotations about spiritual issues. Cotner chooses well, mixing the work of well-known figures (Helen Keller, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther, Saint Francis, Anne Frank) with the thoughtful expressions of young people, including 30 different writers in all. This is an interfaith collection, though never too watered-down to be meaningless. The cover design and page layout are inviting, and the selections draw readers in for more. This is a fine choice for students seeking more than "Chicken Soup" (Health Communications), and a good recommendation for those who want prose and poetry less than a page long. Couple this title with Colin Greer and Herbert Kohl's anthology, A Call to Character (Perennial, 1997), for teens seeking inspirational reading.

From Booklist

Gr. 6-12. Cotner has compiled several interfaith anthologies for adults, and her Amazing Graces: Prayers and Poems for Children (2001) is a fine collection that blends coziness and a sense of wonder. Now she has worked with teen selectors and poets to compile an anthology of poems and scriptures from many eras and faiths. All will inspire teens to believe in their own worth, sustained by their faith in their god and the beauty of the world around them. The contributors include the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, and e. e. cummings, as well as several teen writers. Each selection was chosen to validate the spiritual life, and both teens and adults will find poems and quotations for speeches, devotionals, and private reflection. While mainly intended for personal meditation, the selections are indexed by author, so this can also serve as a minireference guide in collections that serve youth and their advisors. This review is from: Teen Sunshine Reflections: Words for the Heart and Soul (Paperback)
Whirling and tumbling through adolescence, I remember longing for some kind of magic manual, a guidebook to point me in the right direction. Today's teens will be blessed to find just such a wish come true in Teen Sunshine Reflections. Like a wise and faithful friend, it will always be there to turn to during trying times, quiet times, and any time the need to connect and check one's bearings arises.

Important topics for teens like Relationships, Individuality and Tolerance are thoughtfully combined with meaningful words on Spirituality, Forgiveness, Gratitude, and Encouragement. While this book of prose and poetry is directed at teens I can imagine their parents borrowing a copy so they too could benefit from the heartlifting, inspirational writing tucked between the shining yellow cover.

As a teenager, I loved Teen Sunshine Reflections and I feel all teens would love and appreciate this book. Many of the prayers and poems were written by teens to encourage and inspire other teens. I would recommend this book to any teen whether they are facing challenges in their life or just want to read an inspiration book.
