This book endorses the methods used by WWASP (World Wide Association of Speciality Programs). This says it all.

Google "WWASP Abuse," or "WWASP lawsuit," or go to CAICA's website, and you'll instantly see what I'm talking about.

In one of my college classes, Adolescence, we read the book Teen Tips and I found it very interesting and helpful. I liked the book so much that I am keeping it instead of returning it at the end of the quarter. Tom McMahon provided so many helpful tips such as getting kids to do chores as well as how to handle peer pressure. He offered insightful ways to handle the day to day problems as well as all the difficult problems adolescent's face. I have a two and a half year old and I know that when my daughter becomes a teen I will be refering back to Tom's wonderful book to help raise her. I definetly recommend this book to anyone with teenagers to help them get through the adolescent years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Teen Tips at your Fingertips, March 12, 2000

Tom McMahon's, "Teen Tips" is a great manuel for parents with adolescence. It's categorized, so it's easy to just pick up and go straight to your interest without having to read the whole book. My husband doesn't often have the patience to sit down and read, so McMahon's practical, informative handbook works well at giving teen tactics at a glance. I found many of the parents suggestions valuable and have implemented some in my own home. It was conforting as a parent to read about commonalities in the experiences of raising a teen.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Teen Tips" extra tip, March 13, 2000
I am a single mother, divorced with three children in this age catagory. While I found most of the tips helpful, I found the book lacking in advice for divorced parents. More than 50% of homes are now divorced and less than one chapter is dedicated to this issue. I would also like to add my own tip...never talk bad about your ex-spouse in front of the kids. This cuts like a knife into their very soul. The author has my permission to use this in his next revision. Carole V., Hayward, CA

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book For All Ages, March 15, 2000

As a 21 year old college student who is more than a few years away from being the parent of a teenager, I have gained a broad range of perspective from reading Tom McMahon's Teen Tips. Not only was I able to relate firsthand to many of the issues presented, but I also came to realize what a complex and educational experience it is for parents in cultivating nurturing relationships with their teens. I appreciated the personal accounts that are so prevalent in this book, as they help to make the approach more personal of the issues at hand. McMahon does not "sugar coat," oversimplify, or overdramatize the issues that he speaks about, which is refreshing and realistic in a time when all too many adults want to be a "pal" instead of a guide to teens. I will definitely keep this book so that I may refer to it in working with adolescents as a teacher, and in parenting teenagers of my own. There is a multitude of creative and loving strategies toward building healthy relationships with teenagers in Tom McMahon's book and I definitely recommend reading it to those who are teachers, and to those who work or live with a teenager.

5.0 out of 5 stars review of teen tips, March 8, 2000

I read Tom McMahon's book, Teen Tips, for a class I took on Adolescence. Usually I would return my books after the quarter but I have decided to hang on to Tom's book because I feel it has some great ideas about how to deal with today's teens. I don't have any kids yet but I can relate to some of the situations that Tom mentions in his book because I was a teen not so long ago. I plan on keeping this book to refer to when I am in a sticky situation with my kids. I believe that Tom has fair ideas that benefit both the teen and the parent. If you have a child who is nearing adolescence I would definitely recommend this book.

Tom's book contains a huge amount of ideas and suggestions for keeping lives sane- both parent's and teen's. If you have teens, this is a must read. Even if you only gain one new insight, it is worth it. Both you and your child will benefit greatly from this helpful book. It will help you maintain or build a good relationship with your teen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Teen Tips A Pratical Survival Guide for Parents with Kids, March 8, 2000

This book is a must for all parents of preteens and teens. Having two sons, a preteen and teen, I was lost at figuring out how to let them be young responsible adolescents. Many of the household rules my husband and I tried to implement were broken. Upon reading TEEN TIPS we were able to find different ways to work with our sons. The best tip I found was just listen to your teen. I found myself listening but not giving my full attention to my sons. Now I take the time and effort to listen to them. This new found trust allows them to come and talk to me without any hesitation. I now cherish the time I have with each son as he comes to talk to me. Thanks Tom for creating this extraoridinary book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Others' experiences are most beneficial!, March 8, 2000

To better understand teens,we must first realize what kind of dilemas they are faced with. Reading about every day dilemas involving teens and thier parents and effective methods of solving them by other adults and teens is truely beneficial. This "practical survival guide for parents" shows that there are numerous ways of dealing with the same problem, depending on the teen. Not every approach might be for your teen, but you are more than likely to find one that does. Taking another parent's solution and molding it to your teen's needs is a good approach to take. As a future high school teacher, learning about many different methods of teen dilema solving is of great importance to me. Some of the many important topics of Teen Tips are how to communicate effectively, talking about sex, role models, friends, school work & jobs, and taking on responsibilities by teens.I would also like to thank Dr.Carol Becker, from CSUH,for introducing this book to me. This is one book I will not sell back to the bookstore!

4.0 out of 5 stars There is hope for parents., March 13, 2000

With much enthusiasm I welcomed the book into my readings and I am greatful for it.The format this book was written in, gave it creadability. It is nice to be reminded that other parents are going through the same situation my parents went through with me. The intergration of different people from different locations in the country helps the reader to connect with parents from across the nation. Parents and their methods of dealing with their teen's issues were creative and seem simple to understand. Along with real parents sharing their methods in raising their children, the information given by the author, was excellent in letting the reader understand what issue the parents was dealing with. So finally, if you want to be in a good relationship with your teens then read this book.
