Grade 6 Up-A somber and cautionary picture of drinking among teenagers today, based on studies (sources cited) and a composite of interviews with teens. Landau covers drinking and driving, factors that predispose teens to alcoholism, available assistance, and warning signs to which peers and families should be alert. She provides information on current efforts by schools, federal, state, and local agencies to prevent and to treat teen alcoholism. Black-and-white photos are of average-to-poor quality. A chart showing the relationship between the percentage of blood alcohol and body weight that results in intoxication is useful. Readers will find a copy of the SADD Contract for Life of interest. The text is well organized and easy to understand. There is a good mix of statistical and medical information and human-interest material. In the last chapter, there is a decidedly silly listing of "quick responses" that might be made by recovering teens to peers who pressure them to drink again. Still, this title is highly readable and informative, updating research and statistics. Judy Monroe's Alcohol (Enslow, 1994) is more comprehensive and detailed, with much attention to social history. Brian Ward's Alcohol Abuse (Watts, 1988; o.p.) and Nancy Nielsen's Teen Alcoholism (Lucent, 1990) are for quick information.
