About the Author

Sian Young has come a long way from her ‘street days’, and after seven years on the streets of Scotland she has blazed a trail in business, not letting any obstacle overcome her. She is now the head instructor and founder of Soul-POLE - an award winning business in Aberdeen. Sian has also gained many qualifications which include Meditation Teacher, Reiki Master, Pole Fitness Instructor, ETM (exercise to music) Level 2, Zumba Instructor and PADI Rescue Diver. After coming off the streets, Sian was 6 stone and malnourished and found herself bedridden for two years at the age of 22, so being able to take part in so many sports now is real testament to how far she has come both physically and mentally. Not only did she raise her business with no initial start-up funding or business education, only the desire and determination to make it happen, she also gained two awards in her first two years of business: The winner of ‘Grampian Business Awards emerging Entrepreneur of the year 2009’ and Winner of ‘Highly Commended Health Destination Clubs and Gyms Category’ Trend lifestyle Awards 2010, sponsored by David Lloyd. Sian and Soul-POLE made it onto the news again in 2011 when they hosted ‘The World’s Most Famous Pole Dancer’ at Soul- POLE have a look at the video. http://www.youtube.com/ user/danceforursoul - also showing a video of when she was just starting her business in her living room. She is now the first Level 2 qualified pole dance instructor in the whole of Scotland, making her and her team the most highly qualified in the pole fitness industry in Scotland. There is no stopping her: she uses her determination to inspire people to help with her charity work, raising thousands of pounds a year to help build a school in Tanzania for street kids, a subject obviously close to her hear. Sian believes we all have the power to change our life; this book showing what it was really like as a young girl on the streets of Scotland; a raw, open and truly empowering account of this part of her journey. Sian now promotes self-confidence, freedom of expression and creativity through Fun & Fitness in her Soul-POLE Classes.

Because they contain topics that are so raw and honest that they play havoc with our complacencies, there are books that are hard to read, but that must be read, and Sian Young's Teenage Kicks, a true story of dark streets to new beginnings, is one of those must reads. It is a must read because it will arm you with knowledge of the real world out there on the mean streets of far too many cities throughout the world, and with that knowledge, you might be instrumental in saving the life of a young girls in trouble simply by handing her a copy of this remarkable book.

Bitingly candid with piercingly difficult, yet moving details, not only is it an expose on drugs, sex, abuse, and a nearly ruined life, it is also a story of renewal through the love of caring people, and Young's will to heal herself. With this book, she is also contributing to the healing of her generation as well as of generations to come.

Sian Young doesn't hold back in her descriptions of life as a homeless teen lost in a drug-abusing sub-culture. Using stories of key moments to depict the difficulties of her world, Ms. Young conveys a harshness and desperation that would have gotten lost in a more traditional style. If you like stories of people who make it against all odds, Teenage Kicks is the book for you.
