April O'Neil is another character who pops up in nearly incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so it is no surprise that she appears in the new toy line based on Nickelodeon's new cartoon premiering this fall. What may be a surprise, however, is that April now appears to be much younger than in her previous incarnations. While April has typically seemed to be in her 20's/maybe early 30's a few times, this April still seems in middle or high school. Typically the lone girl in a toy line dominated by boys, April has often been depicted as more than just a damsel in distress. While we won't know anything about the new take on the character until the show premieres, we can still check out the new figure and decide how it fairs.

Positives:

*Even though this is a younger April O'Neil, I like how the design nicely uses some iconic design elements of the character: April is dressed in a yellow with the number 5, a throwback to her classic yellow jumpsuit and her long affiliation with Channel 5 news. The rest of April's costume walks the nice line between making her seem ready for action while still looking like a fairly normal teenager. She appears to be wearing a black bodysuit under her jersey and jean shorts. Her large grey boots help her to stand without needing a base.

*The head sculpt has a lot of character to it. It's very stylized, but April does have very expressive eyes and a cute smirk.

*April is loaded with weapons, so clearly she must be training with the Turtles. She includes a bo staff, a short sword, 2 four pointed ninja stars, a tonfa, what appears to be 2 smoke grenades, and a training sword. The weapons aren't painted, but they're numerous and even come on a plastic runner like the original figures (they twist off very easily).

I knocked off a star due to the price, but that's what happens when a toy is in limited production. My daughter is in love with TMNT and April is the only girl character available. She has all the other figures that are $8. Get with the program Nickelodeon! And no Karai figure? Crazy. She is integral to the story!

"Loyal turtle ally from above the sewer".

It was quite a day for April O'Neil, her father was mysteriously kidnapped by the Kraang and then she has to adjust to her rescuers being giant talking turtles. Now living with her aunt she has joined the turtles & often functions as their connection to the outside world. Eventually Sensei Splinter begins to suspect a greater purpose awaits her and starts training her to be a "kunoichi".

I get such a chuckle out of this most recent cartoon version of TMNT's that I have been collecting the figures to sit on the shelf as a constant pleasant reminder. Measuring in at 4.75" tall, she has articulation in the ball-joints at her neck, shoulders, and hips - swivel-joints in her forearms and at her waist. Her yellow shirt has a giant number 5 on it, possibly as a hint at her being the fifth member of team turtle. Both feet are tapped for a figure stand that they do not provide. She also fits on the Classic (1988) man-hole cover bases nicely.

I love the new line, but this April figure seems out of place. Another big con of the figure, like all others in the line (except the Turtles) there is no knee or ankle articulation. This one is not as bad as the Kraang figures, but still an annoyance.

I only bought this one for two (very shallow) reasons. One, to complete the line. Two, because she was short packed one to a case. If it were not for that I might have not bought her at al. She is a definite pass if you do not care about the figure for any other reason than one of the two listed above.

April is not my daughters' favorite character but we found a reasonably priced Splinter for Christmas and April would have been the only main 'Good Guy' she would be missing. Personally I think her figures face looks a little funny but my daughter hasn't said anything.
I think if they ever make Karai that my daughter would definitely play with the two of them together given their scenes together in the show. Even a mutated version of her would be neat.

Our first April O'Neil suffered an amputation. Our 4 year old was merely moving her arms and one arm snapped near the elbow. The material is extremely thin and weak in this area, ridiculously weak. Otherwise the only complain about the product is the price on Amazon compared to other stores. We found the first April at Toys R Us for $9, yet paid $18 on Amazon.
