So here I am reviewing another action figure from Playmates' new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line based on the upcoming Nickelodeon animated series. This time I'm looking at Donatello, the brains/ tech geek of the TMNT team. Looking more like various comic book interpretations of the TMNT than the animation they're based off of, these versions of the Turtles, while inteded for kids, have been some of my favorite action figures added to my collection so far this year. While many of the figures in this new line have been overall the place, the Turtles themselves have so far been consistently excellent. Will Donatello stand alongside his other brothers as a stellar toy or does he have a few loose wires? Read on!

The Facts:

Articulation- hinge/peg ball jointed knees, peg/hinge ball jointed thighs, peg/hinge ball jointed shoulders, peg/hinge ball jointed elbows, swivel wrists, true ball jointed neck.

Accessories- Bo staff, sectional bo staff connected by a chain, naginata (bo staff with a blade, 2 throwing discs.

Positives:

*I've said it in my other reviews of the Turtles, but I love the way Playmates has designed these guys. Not only is the style a cool blending of various comic appearances, but every turtle is 100% different. There are no shared parts between these guys: Each turtle has their own skin texture, musculature, and height. Donatello appears much taller and thinner than the turtles. His neck looks a bit longer, too. His facial expression is very determined and focused. He looks great next to his brothers!

*While all of the non Turtle figures in this line have suffered from a lack of articulation, the Turtles have excelled. Donatello is well articulated to take on a variety of poses.

First off, this is no where as good as the NECA line of TMNT - but Playmates did a pretty good job for mass produced TMNT toys. Undeterred by the conspicuous third toe, I threw down and bought Don & Mikey on a whim. I have to say, to see the difference in the sculps of the Turtles was a welcome sight. Unlike most of the turtle toys, each of the brothers have very unique characteristics about them, going beyond the simple mask colors and the weapons with them.

Donatello is at least a head taller than Mikey, and has a much longer and leaner build. His skin tone isn't my favorite for him - I'm used to seeing him with a more olive skin tone as opposed to this avocado color. It isn't bad, but just different. The articulation is pretty good, and Donnie can take a good variety of stances. His carapace is made of a soft bendy plastic - this can be seen as both a weakness and a strength, as this allows for more movement of the legs, however its so flexible that I can imagine it being accidentally ripped off by a kid. The belt material is also soft plastic. One thing parents should be aware of is that the heads of these turtles, while highly posable, can easily pop off. Thankfully, they pop back on just as easily.

All in all, for a long time Turtle fan, I'm pretty happy with this design of Donnie. It's a better sculp than the 2003 blocky version of the Turtles, it gives each turtle their on unique physical attributes, and hey - you gotta love a Turtle with both brains and brawn. Highly recommended!

The Ninja Turtles were one of my two favorite kinds of toys when I was little (the other being Ghostbusters), and my daughter has taken after me, and is a huge fan of the new show too. It's funny how that works out 20+ years later- something big when I was a kid coming back and being big when she's a kid. Not too long ago she lucked out and got most of the toys in the first wave, with the four turtles being part of the haul. The guys always came with cool extras when the first TMNT line of toys came out, and that trend continues two decades later. I'm reviewing Donatello first because, come on, he's probably the most neglected of the four turtles. What kid wants to be the guy with a stick while the others have all the cooler weapons?

Donatello is the tallest Turtle, even in toy-form, being slightly taller than Raph and Leo. I think it's cool that they went the extra mile on height differences here, as most companies would just use the same bodies when they're so similar in design. The articulation on this figure is excellent and you can move his head, shoulders, elbows, wrists, upper legs and knees. This is a lot more than we got when I was little, that's for sure! The articulation is second only to the great comic-based TMNT figures that NECA put out a few years ago. All the work on Don is great- the colors are perfect, details like bumps on his legs and dents in his shell are there, and they even painted the little ring on the strap of his bo holster. For a toy at this price, they didn't skimp out on the figures in any way. they only thing that might throw fans off is the lack of pupils.

Don can hold his weapons with both hands, which are sculpted in a 'holding' position. And when it comes to weapons, he comes with quite a few extras.
