Whenever we get new TMNT figures it is inevitable that we get a new version of the Shredder, also. Originally conceived by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird when imagining a guy who wore cheese graters for armor, the Shredder has become one of the most recognizable and popular archenemies in cartoons and comic books. While these new toys by Playmates are based on the upcoming animated series from Nickelodeon, the designs of turtles almost remind me more of a blend of various comic book designs. Looking at Shredder, he also reminds me of the Shredder in his recent appearances in the new IDW comic book series. Sure, Shredder has a pretty standard look, but the all white eyes and the shape of the helmet really like that new comic art. Regardless, we're here to look at the toy: Is he as excellent as the Turtles or as disappointing as Splinter? He's actually somewhere in between- take a look!

The Facts:

Articulation- Peg/hinge ball jointed thighs, waist swivel, peg/hinge ball jointed shoulders, hinged elbows, swivel wrists, hinged shoulder blades, swivel neck.

Accessories- Katana, two throwing stars.

Positives:

*Shredder's head sculpt is pretty decent. His face is all covered, but the shape of the helmet is good and the all white eyes are really creepy. Not only is he just an imposing guy covered in blades, but the eyes give him a bit of a supernatural vibe.

*The upper body articulation isn't bad. The arms have a decent range of motion that does allow Shredder to take a variety of poses with either his accessories or attached blades.

*Shredder is very noticeably taller than the Turtles or other figures in the line, which is true to how he's typically depicted.

Negatives:

*Ok,where to start?

My son absolutely needed this toy to go with his Ninja Turtles- or so he told me. This Shredder is a little taller than his turtles, which I think is realistic to the cartoon. He loves it. I hate the little flimsy throwing stars that came with it. Fortunately they were tiny enough for my vacuum to eat and are no longer a problem for me. The silver parts did seem a little cheaply made. The plastic on those parts was a bit flimsy. But my son thinks this Shredder is perfect. He just beats him down daily with the turtles anyway. (Shredder has taken many dives off our second story deck, many tumbles down the stairs, many slams into the toy box- and he is still holding up and ready to be defeated again tomorrow.)

Since I bought the whole set of turtles and the rat, thought I'd better get the villian too! My 6year old grandson will love these!

I picked up this figure to round out a small display I wanted to make. I had already bought the four turtles and was blown away by the amount of articulation and detail of them. This Shredder figure however, does NOT live up to the standard that the other figures had set. The articulation that is there is minimal, making it hard to pose the figure in any kind of action-like stance. The biggest problem with this figure, at least for me, is that there is absolutely NO articulation in the knees or feet. This makes the figure incredibly hard to even stand up. On top of that, the knees are really awkward looking. They're bent back so far that it makes it look uncomfortable, so far in fact that they almost look like the hind legs of a horse.

All in all, I'm don't even want to pose this figure with the others, and I think I'm going to pick up the "Shredder #2" figure in hopes that it's a better figure.

This action figure is almost as solid as the four turtles and as TMNT's arch enemy it's basically required if you want the turtles to have someone to fight. My nephew loved it, and he regularly has the Shredder kicking all four turtles butt at once (just like in the first movie).

Get some foot soldiers to go along with this one.

It was a present to my nephew. He seems to have enjoyed it. Another successful Christmas present. He's pretty easy to please at this age though.

I've been on the TMNT kick and wanted to have a few toys to display in my office (which looks like geek central). Got Shredder, which is one of the more expensive of the action figures, but the detail looks great!!
