This review is from: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Three Pack (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II - The Secret of the Ooze/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III) (DVD)
Growing up, I can't remember anything better than waking up on Saturday morning to watch cartoons. Out of all the cartoons on the morning line up TMNT was priority one. So, logically when movie number one hit the box office I dragged my mom to theater to stand in line. What an awesome experiance.
Now that Mikey is all growns up (in age, not heart), I can watch these movies and remember all the times I spent emulating the fight scenes and every now and then sending my friends home with bloody lips. On to the reviews...... TMNT #1: A+ Great flick. Even now, I cant think of a movie that so closely resembles its other medium. Turtles costumes looked authentic, but Shredder is by far the best dressed. Great story, even though the love scene with Casey and April could have been cut with no tears. The one thing that bugged me more than anything was the origin of Splinter. It was more believable in the cartoon, WHY?!? TMNT #2 Secret of the Ooze: A- Good flick. Didnt like this April as much, but liked the Turtle costumes better. Shredder still best dressed. Toka and Raza, could have been a little more menacing. But the movie more than makes up for it with Super Shredder, and Vanilla Ice's best song of his career "Ninja Rap". Still a solid story. TMNT #3: B+ Good flick. I was a little older when I saw this one so my opinion probably would have been better. But never-the-less the story was decent with what material they had left to keep it fresh. Old April is back with flying colors. My least favorite of the three but had the most heart. Raphael coming out of his "shell", pun intended. So all in all, if your in mid 20's like me, this is a must buy collection, you will look back 30 years from now and feel like a kid again. And at the price you cant beat it. COWABUNGA!! For all you Raphael fans out there, suck it. Leonardo RULES!!

lets face this topic first. The standards by which films are made in present day aren't as they once were back in the early 90's. I myself now have to laugh at some of the ridiculous stuff thats going on in the Ninja Turtles movies. No not the comedy, but say the second films lack of plot or the ever changing cast over the three films. HOWEVER! If you were a fan of these movies long ago when growing up, I beleive you will enjoy revisiting these films. The first film is great and today possibly could pass as a B film. The other two are great for fans, admitidly not as good as the first but at the same time, I feel today these flicks might have gone straight to video. Don't get me wrong. I love these movies. They are a part of my childhood and a part of me. Yet, I am saying the above to tell all film enthusiasts that these aren't "Great films" for film fans. They are for fans of the Turtles and as that, these films triumph. Recapture the magic of these films as they are now avalible in this DVD 3 set. and for the cost, I dobt see how anyone could possibly regret buying these sweet movies. Thanks for reading. hope it was helpful.

Ninja Turtles may be as loved as hated as the Pokemon (and I love Pokemon, too!) but either way, just like Pokemon is in Japan, TMNT is a classic in America! Everyone who grew up in America in the 80's and 90's should get this collection just to say "I have the Ninja Turtle Collector's Set!"
Great movies, action-packed. I personally like the first one most because the turtles look more "real"... Since I expected every sequal to be identical to the very first one, I was a little dissapointed in the 2nd due to different visual effects and the change of casting, and even more so with the third, but nonetheless I love them all, and I recommend all of them if you want a nostalgic collection of growing up.

Not to be confused for a collection digitally remastered for sound and picture quality, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3-Pak simply bundles the previously released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (1993) into one handy, reasonably priced boxed set. I knew this going into the purchase, and so should you. With the exception of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the best of the three films) which unfortunately features the same grainy-at-times video quality of the VHS edition (if not more), the films look pretty good and sound nice in 5.1 Dolby Surround. Features include Widescreen and Fullscreen versions of the films; Closed Captions; English subtitles; Animated Menus; Interactive games; Character biographies; and Trailers. I picked up this collection on the cheap following the big screen release of the CGI-animated feature film TMNT (2007). Until someone gets wise and release a remastered collection, this Turtles 3-Pak is a good, cheap way to preserve the live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Trilogy on DVD.

Sure, we're talking late 80's early 90's. Sure, we're talking about ninja turtles that eat pizza like healthy people should be drinking water, but that doesn't change the fact that these movies are totally awesome. This is totally worth the buy, especially if you were a turtles fan growing up (and if you are in your mid 20s and are not at turtles fan, you may take a long walk off a short pier j/k).
On to the actual movies. Turtles 1: The best of the series, which is standard. . .you get a small glimps into the history of our heros (even if the idea of a normal rat learning ninjitsu is a bit far fetched) the acting is passionate, you get action, emotion, brotherly love and bitter rivalry, and many good ethereal lessons in life. IMHO, still one of the best movies I have ever seen. The movie introduces the foot clan and shredder. Turtles 2: Secret of the Ooze Ok, not quite as cool as the first, but still totally awesome. More humor, less action, more humor, new mutants, more humor, deeper back history, and more humor. Honestly, it's a fun flick, well worth the watch, and as many have already said, Vanilla Ice's best song yet. . . Ninja Rap GO NINJA GO NINJA GO NINJA GO! Turtles 3: Turtles in time Ok, if I wasn't a turtle fan, I'd say pass on the movie. . . but it's got its nuggets of salvation, like, for instance, Raph's maturing, and realizing the dangers of his bad attitude, history of Japan, etc. . . costumes are kinda corny though (the turtles specifically) however, we get to see Casey Jones again, which is always a plus. For the price of this compilation, if you don't get it, you should be locked up. . . it's an awesome piece of history, and honestly, it was the turtles that started my love affair with the martial arts. I owe all my skill to the Creator God, however, I owe my initial interest in Leo, Donny, Raph, and Mikey! -Master Nyte, 4th dan (and oweing my first dive into martial arts to the turtles!)

Being a lifelong TMNT fan, I was excited to see this box set at a local Super Target for $30! While the older cartoon series is long gone and the last movie being made in 1992, my love for the Turtles kinda disappeared...until now! This is the ultimate set for the fans of the TMNT! It's cheaper than buying the DVDs individually and you get a nice box display to go with them! All three movies can be seen in full screen or widescreen! The picture and sound qualities are superb! Probably some of the best I've seen on any DVD! The menus are nicely animated! As far as extras go, there isn't much. You have theatrical trailers and the same game on each DVD: Pick That Flick. A trivia game where they show you a picture of a scene from another New Line Cinema film of the late 80s early 90s and you have to guess which movie it is out of a list of options. Silly yes, but nice and fun to burn a few minutes on. Overall, not a whole lot of extras on the DVDs but the movies themselves were transfered very well onto the DVD format! Plus you can see the films in both full and widescreen! A worthy set to any fan of the TMNT!

1st thing first... Great Service from Amazon.com. The package arrived early than expected.
The movies are great... I showed to my small cousins and nephews, they love it and they never knew that TMNT has a movie, infact 3 movies.... they only new the cartoon series. It is timeless... new generation can enjoy it. The overall DVD package are not that great (lacked of features)... but the reason I bought the DVD mainly for the movies itself. I'm just wondering why the 1st movie DVD came in double sided disc??

I'm 19, and I grew up with these movies. Yes, they are pretty bad by most of today's standards, but damn... these movies kick ass. If you were a kid in the late 80's, or early 90's, then you are OBLIGATED to get this set... or you suck.

TMNT 1: Nice and dark, had a slight tang of the comic books while staying kid-friendly (for the most part). Animatronics aren't so hot, but admit it -- you're not watching it for special effects anyway! The story is wonderfully goofy: basically setting up the TMNT vs. Shredder, but including such ridiculous themes as ninjas corrupting NYC's easily addled youth in a coordinated effort to steal wallets and random valuables (no doubt to add to Shredder's impressive wall of televisions). But don't let that turn you off... it's a fun flick because it's so delightfully campy, and you can't go wrong with it.
TMNT II: TMNT II is not as dark and contains about 90% more cheese than #1. This said, I enjoy TMNT 2 just as much as I enjoy TMNT 1, just for different reasons. Perhaps because it reminds me so strongly of the Saturday Morning cartoon -- it has such a good heart and is so ridiculous that you can't help but come away from it feeling pleasant. Better yet, I feel they tried to include all of the Turtles instead of focusing so much on Raphael. The humor hits the mark almost every time: who can forget lines like "Too Raph!", and how can one not erupt into laughter when a stunned Shredder is warmly embraced by his idiotic mutant cronies? The animatronics/suits look great -- they're easily the best looking in the trilogy. Can't go wrong with the simple story, either -- it hits the right key with some mutant mayhem in the forms of Tokka and Rahzar, mutants who Shredder creates to defeat the Turtles. The most important and enjoyable part: "Ninja Rap." Need I say more? TMNT 3: I never watched this as a child. So when I got the 3-Pak in, I decided to try it out. Unfortunately, it's terrible enough to burn your eyes out: the animatronics/suits are downright awful (the Turtle suits look like they came out of one of those egg machines in the supermarket), the dialogue is goofy, the plot is cheap and idiotic - well, I guess if I were more subjective, I could say that about the other two movies, but at least those campy plots fit with who the TMNT were. This one departs from the TMNT with gusto: they are transported to feudal Japan (utterly out of their element -- part of what makes them interesting is the idea that they could be lurking unseen beneath your feet in a sewer somewhere), where they are accepted by a whole Japanese village with open arms (despite that much of their allure is that they are pariahs), and some villains who are goofy rather than threatening (come on: Shredder could rip your face off... Tokka and Rahzar could throw a 200-pound Turtle thirty feet in the air... and then in TMNT 3 you have a shrimpy daimyo with the wide-eyed gaze and shakes of a chihuahua and some pasty-faced gunrunner with finches). I would have felt cheated had I not realized that you're essentially paying only for TMNT 1&2. 3 was thrown in as a gag, I suppose. Overall: 3 aside, this is a collection you can't do without. The nostalgic value alone is monumental. And the movies are still enjoyable for kids of all ages - ideal for passing on a little of that TMNT bug to future generations! Definitely a must-buy for any TMNT fan, young or old. |
