Gr 5-8--Following a brief description of each country's history and culture are six to eight interviews with native teenagers who are now living in the U.S. The young people talk about their lives here and in their homeland, their trip to the U.S., and the adjustments they have made. At times very moving, particularly when describing hardships endured, the interviews are nonetheless highly uneven and choppy. Vietnam is the strongest in detail; text blocks on culture and customs fill out Cambodia. Full-color photos accompany the introductions; full-and half-page black-and-white photographs are used elsewhere. They are dark, fuzzy, and unappealing; in China particularly, they bear no relation to the text. The bibliographies contain several unfortunate errors. Marginal purchases.
