Book Description

Call to Action April 1, 2000
Lately, troubled teens have been dominating the headlines. But there are other stories that deserve the spotlight--stories about the many teenagers who have dedicated themselves to important, socially useful volunteer work and who will lead their generation toward a more hopeful tomorrow. The fourth in Conari Press' "Call to Action" series, Teens with the Courage to Give profiles thirty amazing young people throughout the United States and Canada who overcame great personal odds to reach out and help others while healing themselves in the process. Each has founded or is linked to a nonprofit organization that is also profiled in the book, to encourage other teens to embrace volunteerism.
In these inspiring pages, to name just a few of these heroic teenagers, you'll meet an amputee who runs in the Paralympics and spurs others on with his inner resolve; the son of a cancer patient who created support groups around the country for kids with sick parents; a girl who helped her mother and younger sister as they died of aids and who is now an aids awareness and prevention volunteer; and one of the students from the Littleton, Colorado, shooting who has gone on to create a teen drop-in center.
Through their courageous first-person stories, these teens show that they are part of the solution to what ails today's society. Includes an extensive resource guide of volunteer opportunities and a classroom/group discussion guide.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In their own words, 30 teens compellingly tell how they overcame adversity and built on their achievements to help other teens overcome the often monumental challenges in their paths. After having much of his right leg amputated to thwart cancer, high-school basketball player Jake Repp has concentrated on training for the Paralympics, elite sports events for disabled athletes. Jake also counsels and supports other amputees. Tori Scaglione was a rebellious, drug-addicted teen headed for prison. Through successful treatment programs and her parents' "tough love" attitude, she has now gained control of her life and counsels other girls to do the same. After witnessing a classmate shot dead in school, Horace Polite-Cobb became active in Youth Crime Watch of America, a program in which students police themselves. The address, telephone number, and Web site of at least one resource readers can contact for help follows each account. These examples set by the contributors, together with the follow-up contacts, will help empower other readers to improve themselves and their world. Ellen Mandel

5.0 out of 5 stars Read "Teens" and Renew Your Faith in America's Youth, April 1, 2000

The stories of the 30 teens who contributed to this book by Jackie Waldman truly inspired and moved me. Their courage to reach beyond their own personal pain and give to others is nothing short of heroic. Our country is in good hands with young people like these contributing and getting involved. If you have children, teens or pre-teens, this book should be required reading. Thank you Jackie for sharing their stories with us. I would also recommend Jackie's first book "The Courage to Give" and look forward to any follow-up books that she may have in the works.

This review is from: Teens With the Courage to Give: Young People Who Triumphed over Tragedy and Volunteered to Make a Difference (Call to Action Book) (Paperback)
Teens and adults alike will be inspired and moved by this most amazing book. I'm very inspired by others who rise above the challenges of life-not in a sugar coated way, but in a real, down to earth way. The endings are not always perfect, but they are always inspiring. This book brought me to tears, for the sadness of some young people's trials, but mostly for the way each of these amazing young people are changing the world with their actions. They are the light of hope. (Okay, so I'm corny!) It really doesn't get much better than this.

From a girl who finds herself terribly lonely after a move, to a boy who loses a limb, to a boy from a gang, to battling illness or drugs, and many more, each a different story, a different challenge, the teens in this book represent everyone. Kudos to Jackie Waldman!

If you work with teens, if you are a teen, if you're related to a teen, if you were a teen: read this book. Be inspired. And then share it.

I'd give it ten stars if I could. Highly recommended!

This book is amazing. Every story brought tears to my eyes. Every single young adult (some are probabally adults by now) is amazing in their own way. I can't wait to see more of Mrs. Waldman's work! You have to read this book to realize that not every teen in America is on their way down, to a life on the streets. Many people think all teens are bad news...read this it will change your mind. I wish all kids in america were like these amazing kids
