Editorial Reviews

Review

" Teen's Guide to Finding a Job is an interesting, informational tool that will help me with all the in's and out's of applying for jobs." -- Ashley M. Coleman, MISS TEEN USA 1999

"This is a very well researched and easy to use tool that I feel will be of great assistance to any young person who is serious about success. The illustrations, format, guides, and exercises come together to make the book attractive as well as functional. This book should be in every school, library, and home. -- Anita Richmond Buckley, Author, Speaker, and Educator

"When the United States shifted from a primarily agrarian economy to the industrial, high technological economy of the present, its children lost the opportunity to learn the work ethic and the skills necessary for future business success from family, extended family or from local community entrepreneurs on family farms or neighboring farms, in little Mom and Pop stores and small businesses, or in larger businesses where a family member or protective mentor taught them both formally and informally, how to succeed in the business world. That is why there is such a compelling need for information such as author Naomi Vernon provides in this splendid guide for teens!

Vernon, whose credentials are impeccable, has written one of the finest guide books this author has ever seen on this subject. The text and graphics are superb and capture, and hold, the attention of the reader. Vernon states that her goal was to help teenagers understand who they are as they apply to the world of work. She encourages them to take personal inventory of their interests, abilities, work values and personal traits. Then she shows them how to match their personalities and skills with rewarding jobs and promising careers. If her advice is followed, these teenagers will have healthier and happier lives. They, and the nation as a whole, will be better off because of this guide. In this author's view, Vernon has more than fulfilled her goal! -- Mrs. Eddie Faye Gates, Tulsa historian and author, Member The Oklahoma Legislative Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Riot, 1921

About the Author

Mrs. Naomi Vernon has a strong interest and desire to see America's youth successfully manage the unavoidable challenge of looking for employment. Having grown up in Cleveland, Ohio, an area dominated by the declining automotive industry of the 1960's, she witnessed how the decline caused confusion and havoc in people's lives. She observed how others reacted to their job search experiences and their struggle heightened her understanding and compassion. She also became fascinated by the power that this process could have over an individual's life. This experience motivated her to pursue a life's commitment in the Human Resources career field. Mrs. Vernon has been exposed to the ups and downs as well as the many tales and myths that young people face during their job undertaking. Further, through personal encounters and careful study of the "job search process," she has come to recognize that stress and negativity can be experienced by a person of any age while looking for employment. She concluded that it was caused by the lack of self-knowledge, a fear of rejection, and being unfamiliar with effective job search techniques. Her understanding and compassion of the daily struggles so many people have has lead Mrs. Vernon to ultimately write this book, and to share her knowledge with anyone seeking a job or career. She has spent hundreds of hours volunteering with America's youth, introducing and preparing them for the same "job search" process as detailed in each part of this book. Her goal is to equip our youth of America with the tools needed to succeed, to increase their awareness, and to inspire them to go after their dreams. Mrs. Vernon has a Master of Arts Degree in Human Resources Development, certification from the California Registry of Professional Counselors, and Paraprofessional Counselors, a division of California's Association for "Career" Counseling and Development (CACD).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Help for teens looking for a job, August 22, 2001

This review is from: A Teen's Guide to Finding a Job (Paperback)
Ms. Vernon's book is amazing. As a teen who has needed to work during summers for spending money I have used this book many times to gain an edge over others who were trying for the same position. The information inside is fun and easy to read, and also very complete. Not only does the book cover how to find a job and apply, but it also gives pointers on how to leave a job so that a boss will give you a good recommendation. You can also take some of this information for job applications and put it to good use when applying to colleges and scholarships. All around it is definately the most complete book out there for teens who are looking to enter the job market.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Teens, May 13, 2009
By
Whether you are a teen who has never had a job before, or an adult with years of experience, this book contains helpful information. Written in a style that is interesting and informative, the author guides teens through all the steps - from assessing interests and personality traits and researching the jobs that seem to suit, to how to keep a job after it is obtained. Problem-solving and negotiating strategies are provided to help guide a teen on salary talks, trouble-shooting problems, and the "right" way to quit if it becomes absolutely necessary. Like most job search books, it contains samples of resumes, thank-you notes, and other correspondence. I recommend A Teen's Guide to Finding a Job to anyone, no matter what your age.
