Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up. It is difficult to imagine a teen picking up this book as a way of coping with being part of a single-parent family. The supplemental textbook design is off-putting and despite "A Talk With..." inserts that profile young adult experiences, the overall tone is impersonal. While some statistics related to single parenthood are included, most of the inserts have a self-help tone about them as they tend to contain self-assessment tools and checklists of behaviors and beliefs. Because of this emphasis, the information will not feed well into school reports. The author's research relies mainly on articles from the popular press and personal interviews with a family therapist. Although a list of suggested reading is provided, many of the titles cited are intended for adults. Sara Gilbert's How to Live with a Single Parent (Lothrop, 1982; o.p.) does a better job of providing young people with a helpful perspective and coping skills. Maxine B. Rosenberg's Living with a Single Parent (Bradbury, 1992) is a good source of personal narratives that illustrate various issues young people may experience.?Melissa Gross, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA

From Booklist

Gr. 6^-12. Beginning with the U.S. census data that states that nearly 18 million children under the age of 18 live with a single parent, Shultz's book walks teens through the myriad trials of living with only one parent at a time--the anger, the added responsibility, the "other" person, the usually downsized budget. Interviews with teens, parents, and psychologists offer young people excellent coping strategies and a chance to see that their anger and frustration are hardly unique. Unfortunately, a chapter dealing with teenage parenting is so out of place within the book's content and focus that this reviewer thought it a printing error. Yet, because so few titles address this large portion of the adolescent population, and because the rest of the book offers solid information and advice where little else is available, librarians may still wish to consider adding the book to collections.
