Book Description

April 10, 2012

In this hilarious follow-up to GONE WITH A HANDSOMER MAN, Charleston pastry chef Teeny Templeton witnesses a murder and discovers that her laywer-boyfriend, Coop O'Malley, has been keeping secrets.

It’s not every day that I bake a dozen Red Velvet cakes, learn my boyfriend may have a love child, and I witness a murder.

After Charleston pastry chef, Teeny Templeton, witnesses a murder, she discovers that her lawyer-boyfriend, Coop O’Malley, has been keeping secrets: the victim’s ten-year-old daughter may be his child. As more lies explode, Teeny finds herself trapped in Bonaventure, Georgia, a zany“little Savannah,” where she must deal with her commitment phobia, gather DNA from a ten-year old child genius, outwit a stalker, decode an encrypted diary, and fend off advances of an ex-beau, a handsome plastic surgeon who’s crazy-in-love with her.  Teeny’s life gets maddeningly complicated by a series of not-so-teeny troubles: an uneasy love triangle, a gossip-mongering tarantula breeder, an wise-cracking Southern Belle with early Alzheimer’s, Coop’s loveable Chihuahua-toting granny, and clues that point to the illegal trafficking of human organs. But when a suspect is arrested, the bodies keep piling up and Teeny doesn’t know who to trust. As the murderers close in, Teeny unearths a revelation that becomes a game-changer and flips her world upside-down.

Editorial Reviews

Review

**Starred Review--Library Journal** "West's second mystery rises to the occasion by following a surefire recipe for adventure: a dash of quirky heroine, a pinch of deadly secrets, and a lovely dollop of sweet romance, all carefully folded into a story of clever twists, turns, and red herrings."

"In West's madcap second novel featuring Charleston, S.C., baker Teeny Templeton (after 2011's Gone with a Handsomer Man) the plot continues to thicken as West tosses one red herring after another into an already deliciously roiling stew of blind alleys." --Publishers Weekly

Kirkus Reviews--"Reluctant sleuth Teeny Templeton is finding that her tiny hometown of Bonaventure is a hotbed not only of petty gossip but murderous machinations...Snarky repartee, and the continuing conceit of Teeny's recipes for disaster, keep the comedy afloat."

Praise for Michael Lee West:

“Full of dramatic action, clever red herrings, and humorous moments, this debut mystery by a well-regarded novelist will please any reader but particularly fans of Jennifer Crusie or Mary Kay Andrews.” —Library Journal (starred review)

“Gone with a Handsomer Man is fun, funny, and fabulous!”
—Janet Evanovich

“Fluffy as a buttermilk biscuit...charming...” —People

“Michael Lee West fans, rejoice! Gone with a Handsomer Man has a fresh, funny, and delightfully flawed heroine that you’ll fall in love with from the get-go. By turns sweet and surprising, it’s a  wonderful, quirky escape.” —Joshilyn Jackson, New York Times bestselling author of Backseat Saints

“Great cook—though reluctant detective—Teeny Templeton keeps the pot bubbling...delicious.”
—Lee Smith, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Girls

“By turns acerbic and sweet, poignant and funny, with great sex, bad boyfriends, and Do Not Try This At Home recipes. However you slice it, Gone with a Handsomer Man is as addictive as red velvet cake.” —Harley Jane Kozak, Agatha, Anthony, Macavity Award-winning author of Dating Dead Men

I really wanted to like this book. I read the first book over Christmas and while it wasn't the greatest book I was looking forward to the sequel.

In the first book Teeny came across as an immature but quirky heroine. In this book she comes across as a jealous 14 year girl who jumps to conclusions based on zero facts. She thinks her boyfriend is cheating on her with every woman he comes into contact with. If he doesn't tell her every single detail of any conversation or event that could have happened up to 10 years ago then she brands him a liar by omission. Yet she had an affair with a worker at her aunt's peach farm 10 years ago and never tells Coop (the alleged love of her life) despite being caught in an embrace with this guy by Coop. He asks her what is going on with this guy and she changes the subject. Does this omission get added to her yearly lie tally? No.

SPOILER * SPOILER * SPOILER

The inconsistencies in this book just drove me crazy. Coop proposes to her after 6 weeks of dating and even though she considers him the love of her life she can't decide if she wants to marry him. However, she accepts his ring while she thinks about it then wears it on a chain and tucks it into her clothes. Then, despite her reluctance to accept his proposal, she is more than ready to adopt his possible 9 year old love child after meeting her only a few times.

Her alleged stalker attacks her and punches her in the face. Does she tell Coop? No. Why? Because then he might make her "stop sleuthing" and she just knows she is smart enough to figure out the mystery when none of the hospital employees or police officers are even aware that this multi-pronged mystery is even going on.

The fact that the author expects the readers to blindly accept Teeny's obvious arrested development regarding her maturity level and then we are also suppose to accept that she is brilliant enough to figure out this complex mystery is insulting.

2.0 out of 5 stars I'm More Than A Teeny Bit Disappointed July 2, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
After reading and thoroughly enjoying Gone With A Handsomer Man, I could hardly wait to read this sequel. I couldn't wait for the cheaper paperback to come out ... I went right for the hardcover, which I rarely do.

Teeny had her quirks in the first book, but compared to what she is like in this one, she seemed shy, secure and reticent in the first one. In this one, she yammers on and on and on, moving so quickly that it is hard to keep up with her.

She suddenly has doubts about the love of her life, even though he has basically done nothing but try to protect and help her. I don't want to spoil the plot, but the small town of Bonaventure, Georgia has turned into Cabot Cove, Maine (Murder She Wrote). Bodies are dropping like flies and Teeny is like a whirling dervish. Nothing is done at a leisurely pace, giving the poor reader a moment to relax and enjoy the book.

I think that if one hasn't read Gone With A Handsomer Man, they would be confused as to past events that are referred to and most of all, the charm of the characters themselves - especially Teeny. Her boyfriend Coop basically plays a very small part in this sequel.

I was so disappointed that I don't know if I will read the next sequel, if it is indeed forthcoming. I finished it because I wanted to know 'who done it'.

Teeny was cute and lovable before, now she is just plain annoying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sequel - a "teeny" bit better than the first April 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed Michael Lee West's first book in the "Teeny" series, but often found myself wanting to smack some sense into the main character, Teeny. West gave a much better depiction of the main character in "A Teeny Bit of Trouble". Gone were the "ugh" moments when you wanted to reach through the pages and wring Teeny's neck. The plot still had twists and turns, but was always entertaining. A great light-read, perfect for a beach vacation!
