Book Description

September 1997 3 and up
Every night the teeny tiny ghost does his haunting homework: he practices boooing, whoooing, howwwling, and yeowwwling in front of his two teeny tiny black cats. But he is so timid, he scares himself.

Then one night the teeny tiny ghost hears a rap tap tap on his teeny tiny front door. Afraid, he tries to hide but then resolves to be brave. So he boos, whoos, howls, and yeowls his very scariest. As the door swings open into the bat-black night, this teeny tiny tale ends with a tender twist.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

In case you weren't aware of it, being scary doesn't come naturally to every spirit and specter. Teeny tiny ghosts, especially, may find that they are haunting-impaired, due to their diminutive age and size. The Teeny Tiny Ghost is one such timid apparition, who attends Teeny Tiny School to learn about spooky stories, Halloween, and the basics of haunting. At his teeny tiny home, the Teeny Tiny Ghost tries to practice booing and whooing, howling and yeowling, but scares himself too much to continue. How will this fearful phantasm ever handle the unseen creatures with scary voices that come knocking at his door on Halloween night?

Kay Winters writes a story that is simple and sweet, and her use of repetition and rhyme will appeal to both readers and listeners. Illustrator Lynn Munsinger's drawings of the Teeny Tiny Ghost present an endearing spirit who falls somewhere between Casper (the friendly) and the angst-ridden woman in Edvard Munch's "The Scream." Younger children will love the Teeny Tiny Ghost's jaunty baseball cap and adorable teeny tiny cats, as well as his failed attempts at being frightful. Older, more spook-savvy kids will get a kick out of the irony of a scaredy-cat ghost. (Ages 3 to 8)

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2. The teeny tiny ghost is so timid that even practicing "boos" makes him hide his little head. Indeed, only his teensie cats are more frightened than he is. Then, on Halloween night, strange lights and loud knocks on the door set the felines mewing, and the specter has to muster up his courage and howl and yowl whoever it is away. Despite his best efforts, the visitors cheer and clap. They're his friends from school?ready to party and go trick-or-treating. The mildest of stories for a scary holiday, this one contains a lesson about being brave for someone else, of making yourself do what you fear, and overcoming it in the process. The cartoonlike illustrations are colorful and add humor, and the typeface and text within the pictures are used to good effect.?Meg Stackpole, Rye Free Reading Room, NY

More About the Author

Did you ever wonder what would happen if you took the road less traveled by?
This was a question I often asked myself.
In 1992, I decided to head down a new highway.
I left my lovely job in education and became a children's book author.
Did I miss the children, teacher friends, Blue Cross and Blue Shield? You bet!
But I wrote every day ( well almost), collected reams of rejections, and kept sending out manuscripts
In August of 94, the first contract call came.
Now 12 books later, the days flash by with writing, researching, revising, submitting, rejections (Yes, published authors still get them), email, school visits, conference presentations, and book signings.
My husband Earl encourages, edits, advises, takes pictures, helps with research , updates my website which he designed, and prints out maps to schools and bookstores.
I love meeting my readers. And I look forward to hearing from you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teny Tiny Ghost Is A Favorite, March 30, 2000
By
This review is from: The Teeny Tiny Ghost (Paperback)
I bought this book for my 3 year old son last year during Halloween season based on the cover's artwork. It has proven to be very entertaining because of the Halloween excitement and the eye catching artwork. No matter what time of year, my son always comes back to this book as a true favorite when it comes to choosing a bedtime story. The "eye filling" illustrations along with the easy to read text never fails to entertain or keep his interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teeny Tiny Ghost, Big, Big Fun!, August 21, 2002

This review is from: The Teeny Tiny Ghost (Hardcover)
The clever, very funny and fun-loving illustrations in this cute Halloween book make a creative and refreshingly original story come to life. Meet the teeny, tiny ghost and his two teeny tiny black cats and join him at his school where he is trying unsuccessfully to learn the ropes of haunting. He howls and he yeowls, boos and whoo-ooes but he consistently succeeds only in scaring himself silly. He hears some suspicious sounds and sees some spooky lights and shadows on Halloween and when the teeny tiny black cats get scared he rises to the challenge, faces his own fears and lets loose with his best, bone-chilling racket to scare away the spooks. A wonderful revelation results! Join in the fun and share these adorably comic illustrations with your children this Halloween. It's sure to become a favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Unscary Halloween Story, May 25, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Teeny Tiny Ghost (Paperback)
From the title, kids will know right away that the main character isn't your typical ghost. Though it's filled with Halloween sounds and imagery, this isn't a typical Halloween book either. This tale will become a Halloween staple because kids will relate more to the timid Teeny Tiny Ghost than to overbearing monsters of the usual sort. The author and illustrator don't hold back, though. The writing and pictures are vigorous and funny.
