Book Description

4 and upP and up
"Listen up!" said the teacher to the teeny tiny class. "The Spook and Spirit Club is sponsoring a contest for all the ghosts in our teeny tiny school. It's a Make a Monster contest -- just in time for Halloween!"

All the ghosts in the teeny tiny class are excited to make their own monsters: scary monsters, hairy monsters, boy- and girl-eating monsters! All the ghosts, that is, except one.

The Teeny Tiny Ghost isn't excited at all. The Teeny Tiny Ghost is scared. He doesn't like monsters: not scary monsters, not hairy monsters, not even boy- and girl-eating monsters. What will he do?

Find out in this sweet and spooky story from Kay Winters and Lynn Munsinger. You don't have to be a ghost to fall in love with the Teeny Tiny Ghost as he struggles with real-life problems like bullies and overwhelming school assignments. And you'll cheer for him as he comes out on top!

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3–All of the ghosts in the teeny tiny school are excited about the upcoming Make a Monster contest–except the timid teeny tiny ghost, who finds the very idea frightening. At the end of the school day, he has not come up with any inspiration for his picture. On the way home, he flies over a dump filled with "raggy, saggy sofas" and wires, springs, clocks, and wheels. He gathers together a box of assorted junk and goes home. That evening, he constructs his monster. When he takes his junkyard creation to school, the other students smirk, snicker, and giggle. During recess, however, the Spook and Spirit Club judges the entries. The blue ribbon is hanging on teeny tiny ghost's friendly monster. In Munsinger's funny illustrations, the school is replete with spiders, bats, and cobwebs. The students are fashionably dressed in hoodies, T-shirts, and skirts. The teeny tiny ghost sports his signature red baseball cap and clutches his two black cats. The ghosts are energetic in action and expression, and their creations are more goofy than scary. Great fun as a Halloween read-aloud.–Linda Staskus, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma, OH

More About the Author

Did you ever wonder what would happen if you took the road less traveled by?
This was a question I often asked myself.
In 1992, I decided to head down a new highway.
I left my lovely job in education and became a children's book author.
Did I miss the children, teacher friends, Blue Cross and Blue Shield? You bet!
But I wrote every day ( well almost), collected reams of rejections, and kept sending out manuscripts
In August of 94, the first contract call came.
Now 12 books later, the days flash by with writing, researching, revising, submitting, rejections (Yes, published authors still get them), email, school visits, conference presentations, and book signings.
My husband Earl encourages, edits, advises, takes pictures, helps with research , updates my website which he designed, and prints out maps to schools and bookstores.
I love meeting my readers. And I look forward to hearing from you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Painful to read, but my kids enjoyed it., May 31, 2009
I agree, it was pretty tiresome saying "teeny tiny" over and over again. My kids (ages 3 and 6) enjoyed the book, though, much to my chagrin, so that's why I'm giving it 3 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars repetition at it's worse, April 13, 2009
By
Roloff (Concord, ca) - See all my reviews
This book angers me so bad I start cussing by the time I get to the 4th page. How many times and to what service does including the words "teeny tiny" have to be in the book?. It's in every sentence, in English class as a young man I was taught that you mix up your nouns from time to time and you don't restate your adjectives unless it's vital. Well the author of this book thinks that saying "teeny tiny" everything 10 times a page adds some type of value to a book about ghost. I try to skip the teeny tiny when I read this book now , I was catching myslef calling the teeny tiny ghost the "goddamn motherf***in ghost" to my 3 year old because the repetition was so irritable. (this is true and I am very embarrased, you read this book everyday for a week and we'll see what you think of the repetition)

5.0 out of 5 stars Loads of Halloween Reading Fun!, August 12, 2006
This book is one my own children would have adored when they were young. Ms. Winters weaves a story that draws the child into her world and keeps them spellbound. A must have for Halloween for your pre-school or early grades elementary school child.
