Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The three rhymed stories in this semi-scary collection vary in their effectiveness, but Chess's quirky illustrations will delight her many fans. Van Laan (When Winter Comes) fills the first two stories with clever wordplay and characters, but the plots fall a bit flat. In "Old Doctor Wango Tango," the author introduces the stingy doctor through diverting descriptions--plus his pets--at length. Then, in a single page, they are inexplicably blown away by a "wahooing wind." In "It," various body parts come "bounding, "whooshing" and "thumping" down the stairs one at a time, then stick together. But when IT "stroll[s] to town," the wrap-up seems abrupt. The third story appropriates the plot of the old campground ghost story about the golden arm, featuring a hairy toe instead. When the creature screeches, "Give me back my hairy toe!" the old woman returns it and happily goes back to bed. With a touch of Edward Gorey and a scruffy cast of characters, Chess (A Hippopotamusn't) lends this eccentric cast a bit of charm. She portrays the doctor and his creature companions as a sort of misfit family; the various limbs of "IT" seem to belong together even before they join up. The title page of each internal story features an engaging child reading the book who grows increasingly frightened at each tale. More droll than frightening, these teeny tiny tingly tales happily will produce only the smallest of shivers. Ages 3-7.

From School Library Journal

reS-Gr 3-Two lesser-known tales, "Old Doctor Wango Tango" and "It," precede the more familiar "The Hairy Toe" in this delightfully wacky collection, perfect for new readers during the Halloween season, but sure to be enjoyed year-round. All of the stories are succinctly told in rhythmic, tongue-twisting language. Chess's acrylic, watercolor, pastel, colored-pencil, and pencil art extends the tales beautifully. Readers will be drawn in to the book by the cover, which depicts a girl hurrying past a cemetery with a book under her arm, as a pair of arms reaches up over a stone wall to grab her. Inside the covers, they meet the same child on each story's title page. Many of the full- and half-page color illustrations within the book are framed with a thin black line, but characters and items in the pictures spill out over the edges. The layout features plenty of white space, and fonts change to emphasize words. Fans of Joanna Cole's Bony-Legs (Four Winds, 1984) and Alvin Schwartz's In a Dark, Dark Room & Other Scary Stories (HarperCollins, 1984) will relish this title. But don't worry-fun and humor prevail over scares.

"Little bit scary, not lot bit scary." That is how my son describes this book. He is three years and three months old, which is just within the author's targeted age bracket. I first encountered this book at our neighborhood library. I had a touch of trepidation that my son would find the book scary. When I first read it to him, he told me that it is a "little bit scary. Let's read it again!" He loves it!
This book has three different short tales with interesting illustrations. "Mean Doctor Wango Tango" has many unfortunate pets. This is bound to spawn many questions: "Why is Doctor Wango Tango mean?" "Why is the cat mean?" "Why won't the dog grow?" "What are pebbles?" "What sound does the wind make?"
The second story, "It", had me a bit nervous. At first I wasn't sure how my son would take to the various "body parts". He loves the idea of the "little bit scary" situation, which, in the end, becomes quite normal. My son won't let me turn to the first page of this story until I read the title aloud, "It." This story too is a source of many questions and comments: "What is a jig?" "The hands clap!"
The third story is my son's favorite. I think the rhymes are, for the most part, the most fluent. (Only a few awkward transitions.) This is also a fun one, because the subject is a hairy toe! Now, if it were a toe of a human, the story would just be sick. But instead, it is the toe of a "Something"! When the something is asking for the return of his hairy toe, the letters spill across the pages in a delightful "hairy text". My son is always asking to read the "hairy words" with me.
Overall, we loved this book so much that we had to purchase our own copy. This may not be ideal for all three year olds. The parents should be the judges of that. But don't underestimate the capacity of your little ones to take in a delightful, unreal fantasy.

I love scary books (ie: Poe, Hitchcock, Twilight Zone) and wanted to share that wonderful feeling of safely being scared with my grandkids (boys ages 2 & 5 yrs, and a girl age 5 yrs). At the library I found Teeny Tiny Tingly Tales. What a wonderful book to introduce the genre to them! I lost count of how many times we read the book before we had to return it to the library. They were still talking about it months later..especially ...drum roll...scary voice...The Haaaaairy Toooooe. My grandkids were so excited when I bought the book. We have read it over and over and over and over. Our 5 year old granddaughter now reads it to us with great expression and lots of fun scary voices (grandpa & I get very scared, of course:)) I would highly reccommend this book. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. I wish it had been around when I was teaching first grade. My students would have loved it!

Five-year old daughter loves to be scared. But afterward she cries and carries on so much that I refuse to read her anything from the genre. This book is perfect for this age. I don't find it scary at all- the worst Dr. Wango Tango does is pull the cat's tail; the worst the lifeless body does is go for a walk. But for my five-year old, these are tinglingly exciting. The kind of book that makes her jump on the bed with excitement, but still sleep well at night.

If I could give this a negative rating I would! Although I consider myself open-minded this book is inappropriate for the targeted age. It's illustrations are borderline obscene with sexual innuendos, while the story contains words above the intended reading level's audience. The stories are intended to be "tongue-in-cheek" but end up being just plain scary and innappropriate for preschoolers. There are plenty of other rhying books aavailable for children of this age, don't waste your time on this one.
