4.0 out of 5 stars Portable Tekken in 3D, 60fps, with Movie! February 14, 2012
By Milton
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I've been more excited about this game than I have been about Tekken Hybrid.

If you're a Tekken fan like me, you've already heard a few things: This game runs at a full 60fps in 3D, and it comes with a movie, Tekken Blood Vengeance 3D. I chose this version over Tekken Hybrid for the PS3, which also comes with the movie.

All of the gameplay that you've come to expect from Tekken is here. You've got 40 some characters with all of the moves of Tekken 6. New are the touch screen controls. You can assign move sequences to the touch screen individually for each of the characters. It makes for easy execution of moves or serves as a learning tool for experimenting with combos.

Gone are the story modes of past games. Gone is also the costume customizaton besides changing the colors of costumes (as far as I know). So you only have a few modes left. They feel sparse. It's the usual sequence of battles but without even a final boss fight like Jinpachi or Azazel. Then the credits roll.

This game really does appear to run at 60fps in 3D mode! I also own Dead or Alive Dimensions, which drops to 30fps in 3D, but Tekken remains at full fluidity in 3D. The only time I've noticed the framerate drop is during Lili's victory scene where the camera gets really close to her and she says "Sebastian, they say they're leaving already". The game looks great in 3D, especially in well lit areas. You'll notice a lot of the old backgrounds along with a few new ones.

I have not played the game online or on local VS, but I did go online to see another person host a fight room. I usually play offline anyways. You can unlock and collect some 700 3D picture cards as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great fighting game for the Nintendo 3DS February 15, 2012
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
If you're a fan of fighting games and like to play them on the go (like me) then it's a great time to own a Nintendo 3DS. On top of Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition and Dead or Alive Dimensions, the 3DS just saw the release of Tekken 3D Prime Edition. From the time I have spent so far on Tekken 3D Prime Edition, I am very impressed. The gameplay perfectly matches the various console and arcade versions of the Tekken series. The graphics are also some of the best seen on the 3DS so far (Runs at 60fps, even in 3D mode) and can hold their own against the other games in the Tekken series (Include Tekken 5 and Tekken 6). On the down side there is not much content beyond straight arcade fighting, which might turn some people off. However, to make up for lack of content, there is a full feature 3D Tekken movie included on the game cart (I have not have seen the 3D Tekken movie include with the game yet, so I will not be reviewing it here). In conclusion if you are looking for prime time Tekken arcade action on the go, Then Tekken 3D Prime Edition is a match made in heaven.

If you have the space and capability in that little game card to put in a full featured 3D movie, then you have space and capability to make the game a LOT better with more customization and gameplay modes (Arcade?? Story??) by getting rid of that darned movie.

The fighting engine is great, nice FPS and all but the lack of any tangible rewards or customizations make this a complete disappointment as a "full" Tekken game.

To sum it up, it deserves a title:

"Tekken 3D, Halved Edition w/ a Movie!!"

3.0 out of 5 stars When the Iron Fist Rusts August 7, 2012
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Pumped from watching the trailer where Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada headbutts Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono, fans bum-rushed the stores to get their hands on Nintendo's first Tekken game since Tekken Advance for the Gameboy Advance. But what did they actually get?

What they got appears to be a watered-down port of Tekken 6 (Which would explain the faster loading times). How watered-down is it? For starters, it has a lengthy survival mode, local and online multiplayer, a standard arcade mode, a practice mode, player stats, and you fight for rank and points that go toward special virtual trading cards. Tekken Advance couldn't come close to matching the 60fps that this game has, but at least it included Tag Battle, VS Tag Battle, and Time Attack. All the characters are included and all their moves are spot-on. But you only get to customize the color of their costumes.

But hey, the developers needed the room to squeeze in the computer animated Tekken movie Blood Vengeance--in 3D! Cuz there's no way you can just rip it onto your SD card, or stream it through your 3DS via Netflix or Hulu, or even view it online with the Nintendo Zone net browser. Oh, and you barely notice the 3D unless the subjects are really close.

So in closing, I can say with a straight face that Harada-san may have won the battle against Ono-san, but has lost the handheld war.

This game is rated T for Teen: Violence, Adult Language.

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game has really taken me by surprise, I wasn't expecting a whole lot due to some of the hate I have been reading, but I decided to pick it up anyways since I managed to get it for around $25 (plus I have been longtime Tekken fan since playing Tekken 2 in the arcades), and I am simply blown away by how great it is.

Sure, it might not be the Tekken with the most modes, the most customization, and the most variety, but it is best Tekken I have played in years when it comes to entertainment. The quick battle took me by surprise since I didn't think it would be that great, seemed like a half-assed attempt at the ghost battle mode, but it works, it simply works.

Sure you don't have the ability to chose your next opponent after you win, but that is because this is supposed to replace the arcade mode, it is simply a vastly improved arcade mode, one which fixes every complaint I have ever had when it comes to traditional arcade modes. Gone is the unnecessary unbeatable boss as well as the terrible AI. Instead, you fight 10 rounds (which can be as long and as challenging as you want them to be) against "ghost" AI characters, who are presented as standard versions of their characters. Every character is ranked, and how difficult they are to fight varies on both the difficulty setting as well as how much higher or lower their rank is in comparison to yours, which are concepts straight out of ghost battle mode. So as you can see, quick battle simply takes the best aspects of both arcade mode as well as ghost battle mode and combines them into one mode that simply works on a handheld.

The reason why all of this works is because the game simply feels like it is a far more pure Tekken experience than Tekken 6 as well as Tekken 5 DR.
