Being an avid Tekken fan, there isn't much that gets me more excited than another sequel in my favorite fighting franchise. I had been looking forward to this one for the past year or so when news was hitting about it's upcoming release and as usual, I put down my pre-order dollars and picked it up first day. After some time playing with it though, somethings bothering me.

For perspective, I fell in love with Tekken with the first in the arcade and it's by far, my favorite fighting franchise. I've played every Tekken to date, and played them to death. Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection is my favorite and I believe the absolute best the series has to offer. So what's wrong with Tekken 6? I'm still not quite sure and that's what's bothering me.

Graphically, it looks very good, in fact the best it's ever looked, but somehow different. The characters have that next gen look about them but may be a little too shiny and bumpy for their own good. I have to admit though, the animations look incredible and very natural and lifelike. The stages are pretty good but nothing spectacular but feature some new break away floors and walls which is pretty cool. The pig sty stage is a real puzzler and is easily my least favorite of the bunch. The soundtrack is also pretty good but I still like Tekken 5 DR's much better. On all fronts though I have a real problem with the the end boss, stage and music. It all just seems so out of place that I have to remind myself I'm playing Tekken. They've tried these type of bosses before and for me, they just don't work. They're much more at home in Soul Calibur than Tekken. After the awesome Jinpachi in Tekken 5, this is a big let down.

Almost every character from the series has returned with a handful of new ones that all play pretty well and aren't totally out of place. I really don't like Lars and Leo though, they look very generic and are the least fun for me to use. I found Zafina to be the most fun of the bunch and the most natural addition with Bob being a close second. All my favorites still play well with some new moves that were fun to discover. The difficulty seems a little ramped up here and I found myself struggling more on medium level than I had in recent memory.

There are a ton of modes including a campaign mode that's like a 3D beat em up, but I personally don't care for it much. It's not fun and doesn't play well, look good and I don't appreciate that I have to go through it to get the characters endings instead of Story Mode which is oddly missing. This is also reminicent of Tekken 3 when they had a similar mode. There's also the standard vs, online, time attack and practice modes.

Like Tekken 5, there's rank promotions and gold to be earned through the campaign and arcade modes that'll enable you to customize your character to your liking. I like this feature in fighting games and I feel it really extends their life.

The oddest thing here is that I should be thrilled to be playing a new Tekken but I'm not. It looks and plays the same but somehow different. I can't quite put my finger on it. The best I can liken it to is when your favorite band comes out with a new album that's just not what you were expecting and your not sure how to feel about it. Tekken 6 is kinda the same and kinda different at the same time but not necessarily in the best way. I'm reminded of Tekken 4, many were put off by it but I didn't have a problem with it and enjoyed it just fine, but like Tekken 6, it was the first on a next generation console. Coincidence? I'm sure the same will be true here as it was with Tekken 4, some will love it while others may feel more like me. Either way, it's still a good game though and I'm gonna play it for a long time and hope it grows on me a little more. I still do recommend it to long time Tekken fans and maybe a rent for newcomers. I invite you to leave any comments on how you feel about it and why.

11/01/09 Update: After considerable playtime with Tekken 6 I believe the problem is a number of small changes that add up to a big difference for longtime vets. Graphically, I think T6 should look alot better but many of the stages are either very dark or the colors have been cranked up so much that much of the detail is lost. Sound wise, the soundtrack is ok but not among the best in the series. A couple of the tracks just sound weird. The Scenario Campaign, which is the 3D beat-em-up mode, seems to have taken center stage and was probably the focus of way to much time and energy on the part of Namco. After all the effort on their part, it doesn't even play well enough to justify the sacrifice. It's just not fun and it's not why we play Tekken. The biggest omission is the Story Mode that rewarded us with a cool cinematic for each character. Their whole reason for being in the King of Iron Fist Tournament. After too many attempts to beat Azazel, the games disappointing final boss, I was rewarded with end credits. The cinematics are why we play through every character and now there isn't that motivation to do so anymore. The difficulty has been ramped up alot to the point of frustration on anything past "EASY", which isn't all that easy either. The last thing that stands out this year are the loading times. Even though they aren't that long, they've never shown up in previous Tekkens and I don't see the reason for it here. I found that installing the game to the hard drive helps but it takes up alot of memory and we shouldn't have to do it in the first place. We want our fighting games fast and ready to go. So that's it for me. It felt different from the first time I popped it in and played it but now I know why. I've accepted it and I'm gonna keep on playing it but I don't think it'll dethrone Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection as the true King of the Iron Fist. Here's to hoping Namco figures this out and gives us a better Tekken 7.

Tekken 6 has a lot of content, gameplay and feature wise, but there are a number of design flaws that hold it back as a game.

-Gameplay is good, although some of the animations seem stiff.
-40 Fighters to choose from. Each fighter has a large move set.
-Stages are very active, but 2 of the stages are ONLY selectable through random select
-There is alot to unlock, but most items are pallete swaps and expense, compared to the money get in scenario mode.
-I would've liked a Costume system, more simliar to Soul Calibur 4. Being able to change colors of all outfits, instead of buying from 10 different colors, would have been nice. Also, would have been nice to allow the customized outfits have their own slot, rather than overriding the existing outfits.
-Scenario mode is addictive and frustrating at same time. You can unlock items without having to purchase, but you get a lot of duplicate items, with just different stats.
-Team Vs mode should have been made to load all of the fighters at once, instead of have to sit through loading screens after each team mate(or opposing team member) loses. Not sure why there isn't a Tag mode this time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tons of fun, but not much is new here..., January 26, 2010

This review is from: Tekken 6 (Video Game)
I've been a big Tekken fance since Tekken 2 on the PSX. A great franchise that requires alot of technical skill to master. When I heard that Tekken 6 was coming to the XBox 360 I was super stoked.

Upon the game's release I heard rumors that it was full of errors, especially with the online portion of the game, so I held off until they patched it. Finally Namco got a patch out and I made my purchase.

The fighting game action of the previous Tekken games is there and I still love it. Choose your character and go 1 on 1 with your opponents. The new bound system is a bit ridiculous, it allows an enemy to start a combo on you, slam you to the ground, and continue the combo (against a skilled opponent you can lose 60-70% of your health in one combo before you can retalliate). Thankfully it takes some skill to get good at bounds and it's still alot of fun. While nothing much has changed since Tekken 3 there are enough new moves and characters to keep things fresh.

There is so much extra junk that I have no interest in that it's a bit upsetting. I don't understand why Namco decided to make the "Tekken Force" the focus of the game and the arcade section (what the series is all about) the bonus. They can leave Tekken Force completely out of the game for all I care, you don't buy Tekken for Tekken Force. You buy it for 1 on 1 fighting. Tekken Force (now known as Scenario Mode) itself is a bit boring and repetitive, but 75% of the game's achievements are found there so if you're an achievement lover you've got to suffer through it. You run through levels, kill bad guys, collect items which you can customize your character with, rinse, repeat. It plays reasonably well, it's just not very fun.

Now for what most people will buy the game for, online. I didn't start playing online until after the game was patched so I missed out on the majority of latency issues. Overall the experience is pretty great. You choose a character and it finds an opponent. Before accepting the fight with said opponent it tells you their connection speed so you can avoid laggy connections. Anything 3 or higher (out of 5) seems to run quite smooth. The best part of multiplayer is making a public lobby with 4 people and playing an arcade-style round robin. The winner stays, the loser goes to the back of the line. It's alot of fun to make a room with friends and simulate the arcade experience.

Technically the game looks good but not stellar. Textures aren't the sharpest but they're not bad. Animations are pretty good. The sound is top notch though, excellent through our 5.1 system.

Overall I enjoy Tekken 6 despite a few bugs and a few decisions on the part of Namco with the direction of the game. If you are a fan of the series or just of fighting games you'll enjoy the fighting experience althoguh you may want to skip out on the "Scenario Mode" entirely.

I bought this game, because i've played previous versions of the tekken franchise and i must say this does not follow the tekken series gameplay. Ever since tekken 4, the tekken series has been going down the drain and with no cool characters and stages and poor gameplay, this game just killed the best memories i had of the tekken franchise ever since i was eight years old. so for those of you that have been playing the tekken franchise should definitley not buy this game for people new to the series you might like it, because it's a whole new fighting game to you.

The characters are great but the the whole tekken force and arcade game endings where switched around making it an annoying experience for those who enjoyed playing every single character in story mode and getting an ending. Otherwise a great vs. game with friends.

Like most fighting games, you know what you are getting when you are purchasing this title. A few new moves and characters here and there, but the core is still Tekken. As a fan of the Tekken franchise, I am OK with that.

What I don't like though are two big things. 1) The "Tekken Force" or Campaign or whatever they are calling it seems to be a major focus as it is the first option in the menu; and it totally sucks. Just button mashing hoping to auto-focus towards to closest guy and move on. Pointless stupid mode. The ONLY reason to play it is to unlock customizable piece for the fighters and get more money to purchase what you don't. 2) The last guy is no fun to fight. I remember back in the day when Heihachi was the boss, and he was a challenge to beat. Nowdays, Tekken has evolved into a solid fighting game with cheating, game-breaking bosses at the end. They aren't "fair" at any point and really take away from the sense of accomplishment in the game as you just have to spam a move that works to beat them.

Regardless, Tekken 6 is still a fun, solid fighting game, despite these two issues. The graphics aren't the best and seem a bit dated now, but overall, especially with the price drop being less than $30, I recommend this game.

3.0 out of 5 stars LAG will be your downfall, November 4, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Tekken 6 (Video Game)
I have been a fan of Tekken since the beginning and I was looking forward to this game for a very long time. The biggest complaint I have been hearing is that Tekken 6 is no different than the previous games, which in my opinion is actually a great thing since I love this franchise and think it shouldn't be changed. My biggest complaint about Tekken 6 is the lag when playing online. I have Tekken 5 DR for PS3 and it suffers the same lag but since it was a downloaded game, I didnt think anything of it. I was hoping Namco would have fixed this issue for Tekken 6 but they didnt. So I payed $[...] to not be able to play a decent game online without a 1-5 second delay in the play. I am very disappointed in Namco and if I wouldve known this issue still persisted, I wouldve passed on this and continue with Tekken 5 DR.

3.0 out of 5 stars If you liked Tekken before than you're going to love this!, October 29, 2009

For me, I stopped playing since Tekken 3 Tag Tournament. It was so awesome then and it's still as good as before. Now, you must be wondering why I took 2 star off from this rating. That's because it's been about 10 yrs since Tekken 3 came out and it's relatively the same game. It does have better graphics and sounds and etc... but the new moves since Tekken 3 are very little but they make up w/ enormous player roster you can play with. 40 to be exact. So, I kind of consider this as Tekken 3 w/ 40 characters and that's why I still love it. Another start I took off is because online as of this review is almost unplayable. Probably, 4 out of 5 games you'll be disconnected during the match... If they can match online quality as BlazBlue/SF4/DoA then this will kick ass!!!! for now, I'm just frustrated w/ online game play...if it does improve I'll add 1 more star to this review.

4.0 out of 5 stars TEKKEN 6..... New and Improved?, November 1, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Tekken 6 (Video Game)
Being an avid fighting game fan, naturally I am one of the many who have come to love the Tekken franchise. Ever since game one, its always hit the spot for me one way or another. So you know it was a given that I would snatch up the Tekken 6 as quick as possible. But after playing it for a couple of days, I'm finding myself wondering what a lot of people are probably wondering: Was this worth the sixty bucks? Anyway, here is what I've learned so far.

The Good

One thing I can give Tekken 6 credit for is that its brought some new stuff to the table. Granted, I didnt get a chance to play Tekken 5, but I have every other title and I can say that Tekken 6 is waaaaaaaaaay different then any of its predicesors. The biggest draw to the new stuff is the online stuff. Just as with any fighting game in the next gen. systems, there is the online 1 on 1. I love it, thats one of the biggest reasons I bought it. So far its worked great. Very little lag, decent matchmaking time, and a great ranking system. But aside from that, there are a plethora of offline modes for you to mess around with and enjoy. The campaign mode, essentially a combination of Tekken Force and Story mode, is way deeper then any of the individual character stories in the past. This incorperates everyone into it, one way or another.
Also, the character customization, always fun, although I was hoping that this time around we could make our own player, but guess not. New moves, great soundtrack, 40 characters to fight with (old and new), decent voice acting, beautifully rendered and fully interactive stages (my favorite is the stage where you can kick around the sheep), and characters. Bottom line here, the graphics are gorgeous, just as expected. There is enough here to keep you busy for quite a while.

The Bad

Hey, the perfect Tekken game was too good to be true. One of the more minor gripes I have with this game is something you find immediately when you open the player select: all 40 characters are available as soon as you pop the plastic off the case. I've always enjoyed the part of fighting games were you unlock the characters by various methods. That was part of the fun. Personally, I think that was a vital part they should have kept. The only consolation to this is that in campaign mode, you are essentially unlocking them in order to use them in THAT mode. Not a good trade off to me.
One big thing that I notice about this game is the difficulty. I can honestly say this is the hardest Tekken game I have ever played. I had to drop it to beginner to get the rust off, but even then I'm gettin my butt handed to me, and I'm pretty decent at this. Most notably, the final boss is by far the hardest to beat. I have YET to beat him, its almost impossible! If you've every played Street Fighter 4, its just like fighting the final boss there. Its absurdly hard. Speaking of which, much of this game reminds me of SF4, but I digress.
My last big gripe about this is for the Xbox specifically. A lot of poeple have said this, and I fully agree: this game is NOT meant to be played on an Xbox control. Niether the D-pad or the joystick work well enough to execute the moves desired exactly the way you want them to. This makes winning critical matches extra hard, and freakin frustrating. Not much we can do about it, but its just something to be aware of. If you have a choice, get it for the PS3, the controls feel much more natural.

So at the end of it all, do i think that the game was worth the money? *hesitation* yes, I do. Its a great game for what it is, and lord knows if you get a room of Tekken fans on it, it's fun for hours on end. If you can get past some of the stuff listed above while you playing alone, then you'll be satisfied. A must have for Tekken fans, a maybe for fighting game fans in general, and a rental for newbies. Hope this helps a little for yall still on the fence about it. Peace
