5.0 out of 5 stars great brake, great design, October 14, 2009

I have an old 1970-something Raleigh and I had read that the older road bikes need a longer reach for brakes. This brake had plenty of space leftover to move the brakepads down - it's really quite perfect for older bikes. I highly recommend refering to Sheldon Brown's website [...] This brake was very easy to install; I will definitely be buying more of these for my other bikes.

Like at least a few of the other reviewers, I bought this brake because it's pretty much the only caliper that will allow me to use 700C wheels with my old steel frame. Now that I've gotten it on the bike it works great, but I had to drill a larger hole in my frame to accommodate the recessed mounting bolt (-1 star). Before you buy, make sure you know what kind of brake mount you need and what you're willing to do to make it fit. These other sites might also help if you're not sure:

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for anyone with a vintage bike., October 20, 2009
This review is from: Tektro R556 Road Caliper Brake, Front, Silver Recessed Nut (Misc.)
I very rarely write a review on anything, but having seen these reviewed in a lot of places by cycling eggheads talking about the longer arms providing less braking power etc etc. I felt what they all failed to say is that if you have a vintage racer with modern 700c wheels they are THE ONLY MODERN BRAKES THAT WILL FIT. It's either these or a pair of ancient Weinmann calipers or similar.

Having fitted these, I have to say that the difference compared to the old Weinmann calipers is astounding. They are an incredibly worthwhile upgrade that might even save your life. I decided to take the plunge after a couple of near misses due to my poor brakes, I am so much more confident and safer as a result that I would highly recommend anyone with a similar setup do the same. Cannot speak highly enough of this product, brilliant.

You'll have to get your frame drilled out to accommodate the new alan key style fittings but any decent bike shop will do it for just a few quid.
