Product Description

Families is designed to operate in conjunction with Legacy Family Tree, the leading Windows-based genealogy software from Millennia Corp. Your Legacy family files can be easily transferred to your Android device, enabling them to be viewed and edited wherever you are. Families supports the following functionality:

- Multiple family files
- New family files can be created from scratch
- Family View, Pedigree View, Descendant View and Timeline
- Index, searchable by Given Name, Surname or RIN
- Relationships
- Events
- To Do Lists
- Master and Detail Sources
- Locations and Addresses, with geolocation via Google Maps
- Alternate Names
- Pictures, including the ability to add pictures from camera or photo album
- Documents and audio files
- Portrait and Landscape mode on all views
- Full screen support on large screen devices
- Supports Legacy 6, 7 and 8

Families uses a highly efficient database implementation, allowing very large family files to be supported. Users have successfully displayed and edited files containing over 300,000 individuals on an iPhone.

Families requires access to a Wi-Fi network or use of iTunes via a USB connection in order to transfer family files between your device and your PC. USB transfer uses iTunes File Sharing which requires your device to be running iOS 3.2 or above.

Families requires a companion program running on the PC to transfer family files to and from the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. This program, Families Sync, can be downloaded free of charge from www.telgen.co.uk/families.

A sample family file is included.

Support and exchange of information with other users is available via the user forum at www.telgen.co.uk/families/forum.

Great program and I can have my genealogy at my fingertips when I have an opportunity to do some unplanned research when I'm out. Also fun for sharing data with other family members at events like weddings and parties.

I haven't tried synching back to Legacy yet and use it mainly as a viewer. I figure that data input on the Kindle Fire is too slow and inaccurate and I would rather do serious data input on my laptop, but at least I have the info to do look-ups and print out what I find.

Recently completed a 3 month geaology trip up the east coast. As we wanderd in and out of "old" cemeteries, historical societies, city archives, etc. it was GREAT having my family data at my finger tips, without having to lug around and start up my laptop at every stop!! I generally use this app on my Kindle Fire, but also, in a pinch, use it on my HTC Droid phone. I use the Kindle more, as it has a bigger screen:-)

My housemate uses Ancestry.com for both her family history and as an app for her Kindle Fire. Personally, I prefer "Families". I find it an easier product to use, and as long as I remember to "synch" I have everything I need without a wifi connection (which is tough to find in most grave yards).

Families Sync was difficult to install on my Kindle Fire HD. An email response from TelGen was not really helpful. I discovered the help menu in Families Sync and worked with it for about an hour. The problem was that I could NOT find any sign of a Families folder or a Kennedy file when I navigated or searched the Kindle\Internal Storage file in Windows Explorer while connected by USB cable. I had to create a new file in Internal Storage, name it Families and drag my family SQLITE file to it. I then disconnected the USB, and after a couple minutes, my family tree was viewable on my Kindle Fire HD.

My genealogy software is Legacy, and I really like it. Even more now that I don't have to take a laptop with me to see where the (whatever) I found fits into the family in my family tree. Although you can edit/update on the Android or Fire, it's more for short entries (too slow typing one letter at a time to write a paragraph). However the navigation is intuitive and easy to use, and it helps me see whether the (John Smith) I found is MY John Smith very easily. It does all that I hoped.

The Families app does not work on the new Kindle Fire HD 8.9 tablet. As for working on the Kindle Fires prior to the tablet, I highly recommend it. Easy to install, maintain and upgrade thru iTunes.

I downloaded this for my wife's Le Pan Android tablet. I also downloaded the free conversion program that converts the Legacy file to work with Families. I could not get the conversion program to put the file on the tablet, but I was able to do it manually eventually. The interface is very different from Legacy Family Tree, so you have to learn your way around a new way, but as I said in the title it does the job. I've only spent about 15 minutes with it, but my initial feel is that it is for occasional use only and I would definitely do whatever I could on a regular computer but it would be very handy when visiting family and sharing information or anytime you had to be away from home to get data. Just so you know, I do very very little family history work so far, but like most other well intentioned procrastinators, I do hope to learn it and do it before too long and I think this is a handy little app to go along with my Legacy Family Tree.

I just purchased the Families app for my Droid 2. After downloading the families sync app, I first tried using the USB cord to sync my PC files and was having some problems, but then I tried using the WiFi connection and transferred the files in just a few minutes. It was incredibly easy following the onscreen directions. I have 7,887 names in my Legacy database. This is just like viewing a smaller version of your PC files. Now I will have my research with me wherever I go. Wow!
