2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, April 25, 2000

This review is from: Telecom Business Opportunities: The Entrepreneur's Guide to Making Money in the Telecommunications Revolution (Paperback)
The book Telecom Business Opportunities by Steve Rosenbush is not as spectacular as I thought it would be. First off, the perspective I got before purchasing this book was that he would reveal secrets to me about how to get a pretty penny from telecom opportunities.

In the title it says, "Guide to Making Money." I was disappointed to get a history lesson in the first few chapters as it spoke about the history of telecom. The book eventually gave some useful advice such as contacts of venture capitalists and various telecom technologies to invest in. But as part one of the book concludes, Rosenbush talks about customer relations, leadership, and management. And as aspiring as he made it, my interests were whether or not it was feasible for me to get into the telecom business so late in the game.

The second part of the book, Case Studies, seemed to be a collection of success stories to once again inspire the reader. The stories are interesting but away from the fact that these were a handful of people who found niches, was in the game early, or was just business geniuses. I felt that it really did not belong in the book. One can argue the point that we can learn by example, but the book specifically states that it is an "Entrepreneur's Guide to Making Money." So I felt that he might have satisfied my frustration if he could have offered me better advice to becoming a successful businessperson in telecom.

As a graduate student studying Telecommunication and Information Resource Management, I found that there are better sources one can choose to find out how to make money in the business of telecom. My disappointment does not stir from the way the book was written, in fact, I felt the book was well written, organized, and informative. My disappointment stems from the misleading title, and with that alone, I base my judgements upon. I, like most people, do not expect to be given the secrets to success, but I did expect more from the book that led me to believe that it would.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT MATERIAL, January 5, 2000
This review is from: Telecom Business Opportunities: The Entrepreneur's Guide to Making Money in the Telecommunications Revolution (Paperback)
This book is excellent. It has more information than one could expect from it by its name. I would recommed the book for those techinicians who want to learn how the business work, and for those entrepreneurs who want to make money with this industry. I am a technician and I work developing products for a Telecommunications company. The book gave me a lot of ideas to suggest products in my job, and of course, it guided me through the facts of how techonology allows to make money. The writing style of the book is very good, it is nice to read and it doesn't bore, but invites to continue reading. It is well organized. Finally, one of the most important things the book has is the section of cases. I have read 9 of the 20 cases, and they all teach something. They are not only motivational stuff, but show clearly how the people mentioned there have made money with the technology, having the idea of technology as a tool to make money, and not as a scientific thing.

So, it's a great book, and I recommend it to be bought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, well-written, January 10, 1999
This review is from: Telecom Business Opportunities: The Entrepreneur's Guide to Making Money in the Telecommunications Revolution (Paperback)
In giving specific case studies of entrepreneurial success stories in telecommunications, Mr. Rosenbush does an outstanding job in giving us an overview of this dynamic industry. He also provides us with an interesting and informative discussion of competition in the industry prior to the dominance of AT&T. As a student of the industry, I have read several books on telecommunications and found this one to be the most informative yet. This is a great read for both the novice and the industry veteran. A very good book. My only surprise in this book is that the book covers much more than is suggested in the title, and covers it well.
