More About the Author

I have been in telecommunications now since 1978. My first job back then was more data oriented as I worked on numerous data projects, commercial radio, and even satellite television. My first job was running an electronics business that specialized in all these areas. In 1981, I began working for Pacific Telephone in Los Angeles. Due to my background, I was a quick learner and was sent through numerous accelerated training programs by the phone company. I later moved on to the private sector after the Bell System began its first wave of layoffs, and joined with United Technologies Switching. This was a whole new experience for me, and I quickly climbed the ladded to Sr. Field Engineer. Once again my experience in packet networks and radio technologies helped me excel in telecommunications. After numerous mergers and acquisitions, I finally left the company to pursue more stable employment and landed at Tekelec. I have held numerous positions at Tekelec, and have been with them now almost 21 years! Believe it or not, I was a music major in college (although I also studied digital electronics and engineering with a business minor). I still play guitar, so maybe my next book will be a music book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good protocols overview, March 21, 2000

This review is from: Telecommunications Protocols (Paperback)
If you need a reference book this is a good one. It is not detailed enough to be used by professional, but it is useful to students. The Cellular Networks,ATM and SONET parts are not the best. LAN related parts are quite good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable, January 19, 2000
This review is from: Telecommunications Protocols (Paperback)
If you are a non-technical person (I am a lawyer, with zero mathematical or engineering background) and looking for a place to begin learning about telecommunications technologies, here's the book. I had gone through at least a half-dozen "basic" telecom technology books, and found that they would invariably lapse into techno-speak; creating large gaps in my understanding of the subject matter. Not so here. The author is very patient with his readers. When a concept is important, he says so, takes his time, and uses good examples from the everyday world (i.e. analogies to travel agents) to help bring his readers along.
