About the Artist

Ensemble Caprice, under the artistic direction of Matthias Maute and Sophie Larivière, is renowned for its innovative interpretations of baroque music. Originally formed in Germany in 1989 and now based in Montreal, the ensemble continues to give concerts in Europe and has appeared at the Vlaanderen Festival in Bruges, Belgium, the Netwerk-Reihe of the Organisatie voor Oude Muziek in The Netherlands, the International Recorder Symposium in Stuttgart, the Recorder Festival in Stockstadt, and the Early Music Rencontres in Heidelberg. In 2005, the ensemble made its U.S. debut in the Boston Early Music Festival concert series and has subsequently appeared in many parts of this country, with a tour of Israel. Closer to home, the ensemble has its own concert series at Redpath Hall in Montreal and was recently nominated for the Conseil québécois de la musique's prestigious Prix Opus award in three different categories, including best early music concert and CD.

Format: Audio CD
The idea of this album is that the baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann had a knowledge of Polish and Moravian music, from his time spent as Kapellmeister to Graf Erdmann II of Sorau, which is in present-day Poland, and this knowledge made its way into his own music. Thus the Ensemble Caprice and their leader, Matthias Maute, have juxtaposed selections of Gypsy music compiled in the Uhrovska Collection from 1730, a volume of about 350 Gypsy works, with Gypsy-tinged works of Telemann. This works quite well, as one can see how a Gypsy-like spirit colors the Telemann selections. Some of the Telemann works are complete, e.g. the "Grillensymphonie" and the Concerto in e for recorder, transverse flute, strings and continuo, while other Telemann selections are single movements from longer sonatas.

This album could almost be the Ensemble Caprice's answer to a Roby Lakatos album. The Ensemble Caprice give wonderfully energetic performances, but remember to chill out for moments of relative repose when needed. Carmen Genest is the guest vocalist and contributes to 2 of the tracks. Overall, a fun and diverting album.

This is not your classic classical CD.

Blending baroque with folk and gypsy music, the CD is full of life and energy. It feels very immediate in a way than most "classical" music often doesn't.

Wonderful CD, exposure to new music of Telemann previously unknown to me, I went out and bought a lot of sheet music and look forward to performing this material, or at least playing with other amateurs. Very valuable CD
