Excellent Essercizii, January 9, 2012

This is really wonderful. I have the other recording on Arkiv and on DHM. Both are okay. The performances in this recording are lively, recorded in wonderful sound, and include period instruments. That is a magic combination for Telemann. During his own time, Telemann was at least as popular if not more popular than J.S. Bach. Obviously, that judgment has not quite lasted the test of time. This recording does give you a lovely example of why he was so popular.
This music is really heavy on the recorder. For many of us that have been listening to classical music, recorder is really not that common. Older recordings of baroque music did not always display recorder as well as in these performances. More emphasis was on the strings. This performance can go a long way towards reintroducing and re-popularizing recorder music to modern listeners (even of baroque music).
It is kind of an expensive set and comes in two volumes of two discs each. If you get it through one of the marketplace sellers, it is not too expensive. That is what I did. If you were to have only one set of the Telemann Essercizii, this would be it in my opinion.
