Book Description

March 1992
The classic, groundbreaking chapbook of BDSM science fiction by Cecilia Tan, originally published in 1992, now available as an ebook! All three stories from the original collection are included, Telepaths Don't Need Safewords, Cat Scratch Fever, and Heart's Desire. Kinky, intense erotic love stories mixing bondage & domination with sci-fi/fantasy.

Cecilia Tan launched her career as an erotica writer and erotic science fiction pioneer in 1991 when she wrote "Telepaths Don't Need Safewords" and first released it on the alt.sex.bondage newsgroup. She then founded Circlet Press to publish the printed edition, and quickly expanded to publishing many other works of erotic science fiction and fantasy. She is the author of many other books and stories, including the forthcoming novella, Royal Treatment (which tells a story of the youth of one of the "Telepaths" main characters) which will be out in December from Torquere Press.

"Cecilia Tan is simply one of the most important writers, editors, and innovators in contemporary American erotic literature. What's just as remarkable is that her insight, wit, and craft has only become beguiling each year. I am always interested in what she has to say, and I look forward to her every new [work]." -- Susie Bright

"Cantabrigian scribe Cecilia Tan [is] one of the nation's best-known enchantresses of the erotic fiction genre."--The Boston Phoenix

"CECILIA TAN CERTAINLY knows her way around erotica."
--The Boston Phoenix (Sex Divas of Boston, Feature)

"Tan can write erotica and combine it with... almost anything and make it completely alluring, arresting, and entirely believable."--True Review

"Inventive and playful, Tan exhibits great imagination."--Penthouse.com

"[Her] best work fuses [fiction] with sexual practices beyond the norm. Amy Tan it ain't."
--Harper's Bazaar Singapore

"Tan's marvelous descriptive abilities ... reach out of the page to the reader with a tremendous urgency. There's something for everyone here." -- Paramour Magazine

"Tan herself is writing about many other things when she writes explicitly about sex: the influence or people's placement in social class and gender, race, and power groups in influencing sexual attraction, sexual practice, and sexuality."
--New York Review of Science Fiction

I write about my passions, which include baseball, erotica, gourmet food, martial arts, and travel. I write fantasy, science fiction, erotic fiction, paranormal romance, and anything else that stimulates my imagination.

In the erotica field, I've been published everywhere from Ms. magazine to Penthouse, and I'm in many, many anthologies and the Best American Erotica series. Susie Bright called me "simply one of the most important writers, editors, and innovators in contemporary American erotic literature." Erotic books I've authored include Black Feathers, White Flames, The Velderet, Mind Games, The Hot Streak, and The Siren and the Sword (Magic University, Book One). I've also edited many anthologies including Women of the Bite, Cowboy Lover, Sex In The System, Wicked Pleasures, SM Visions, for many different publishers, and many many books and ebooks for the independent publishing house I founded, Circlet Press. Those include Best Fantastic Erotica, Erotic Fantastic, Like an Animal, Like Crimson Droplets, and many others, both for Kindle and in paperback.

In science fiction/fantasy I have been published in Asimov's magazine, Strange Horizons, Absolute Magnitude, and many other places.

In baseball, I am the editor of the Maple Street Press YANKEES ANNUAL, author of The 50 Greatest Yankee Games, co-author of 50 Greatest Red Sox Games, the co-editor of THE FENWAY PROJECT, and co-editor of '75: The Red Sox Team That Saved Baseball. 5.0 out of 5 stars Short, sweet, sexy science fiction anthology, September 20, 1997
This review is from: Telepaths Don't Need Safewords and Other Stories from the Erotic Edge of SF/Fantasy (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a slim volume of short stories which merge the worlds of science fiction, erotica, and BDSM, using the best of all three. It does so without sacrificing the usual tropes of one or more genres. It's an excellent first introduction to Circlet Press (it has a price that's hard to beat). The characters are well-rounded within a short space of time, the plots are substantial and exist as more than a vehicle to bracket sex scenes. The stories got me aroused; they also evoked powerful emotions. I'd recommend _Telepaths Don't Need Safewords_ to anyone -- and have. I let a romance-reading friend, who never reads straight erotica or science fiction, read my copy and she wanted more!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent writing, May 27, 2000

I've always liked Cecilia Tan's writing which is almost poetic at times. This little pamphlet collection of short stories focuses on BDSM, fantasy, and erotica with just a splash of horror for good measure. "Telepaths Don't Need Safewords" is self-explanatory: if you can read each other's minds, there's no need to establish a safe word! "Cat Scratch Fever" is a beautiful, haunting tale (no pun intended) of a rather interesting love match. And "Heart's Desire" tracks Cleo's attraction to and love for another's sub. All in all, this collection is beautifully written, entertaining, and downright erotic. Tan's skills shine throughout. I enjoyed reading this and am quite glad I ordered it.

With less science fiction or fantasy elements than is usual in a Circlet Press book, this small collection of short erotica is nontheless very entertaining and arousing. Once more the stories cover several different orientations providing almost anyone with something to enjoy.
