Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Impeccable, tasteful, and flawlessly executed, this two-CD package documents guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Ron Carter's interactions before live audiences in the mid-'80s. Previously released as single albums entitled Live at the Village West and Telephone, Telepathy gives ample evidence of the two musicians' empathy, sensitivity, and subtlety. Virtually every piece is taken at a relaxed, midtempo pace, offering the patient listener an intimate glimpse into two highly skilled craftsmen at work. Hall's rounded, bell-like tone and Carter's assured rhythms are extremely well-suited to investigate the harmonic possibilities on a variety of tunes, from "Blue Monk" and "St. Thomas" in the bebop vein to "Stardust" and "Embraceable You" on the standard side. "Two's Blues" and "Bags Groove" suggest cerebral blues, whereas "Summer Night" and "Candlelight" are given the pristine, introspective treatment at which these two are masters. Hall's inviting, accessible style has changed little over the past 40 years, and with Carter as the perfect foil, his sophisticated lyricism and deft use of chords are once again put on display. --Wally Shoup

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Great Albums in One from a Brace of Masters August 14, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Jim Hall and Ron Carter comprised one of Jazz's two greatest guitar and bass duos, the other one having been Joe Pass and Niels Henning Orsted Petersen. Lamentably, very few recordings of Jim and Ron's work together exist. Telepathy is actually a collection of two difficult to find live albums: Live at Village West and Telephone, and it's offered at a price far less than what you'll likely pay for either of the individual issues. If you love Alone Together, you'll certainly want these two albums in your collection.

In their way, Pass and NHOP were the Bird and Diz of Jazz strings. Catch their virtuosity in Chops, Northsea Nights, The Joe Pass Trio and Oscar Peterson's The Trio. Hall and Carter, as a duo, are more in the cool jazz tradition. (Hall was a celebrated collaborator of Bill Evans, Paul Desmond and other stars of the cool school). Their live work on the Telepathy collection takes them into slightly more experimental territory than the material on Alone Together explores, but the Telepathy performances feature Jim and Ron's trademark telepathic connection and their uncanny ability to find original melody, harmony and rhythm in standards you might have thought had been explored to death.

If you're getting hooked on jazz guitar and bass collaborations (or you already are and want to hear more), I also recommend the Pat Metheny/Charlie Haden collaboration Beyond the Missouri Sky as well as the Pat Metheny Trio albums Bright Size Life (with Jaco), Rejoicing (with Haden), Question and Answer (with Dave Holland), Day Trip (with Christian McBride).

If you want more jazz guitar and bass duo, check out Jim Hall and Basses with Holland, Haden, McBride and others.

5.0 out of 5 stars great recording October 19, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Jim Hall is a musicians' musician, a guitarists' guitarist in this case. He's not really a household name like Miles or Ron Carter, which is hard to understand after hearing this recording. Hall's solos are compositional. His interaction with Carter is sublime and thoughtful, no rote licks here.
