God among Giants,

This review is from: Telephone Road Houston, Tx (Audio CD)
I'm from Houston, TX and know Mark personally. I've had opportunity to share the stage with him on several occasions, and have never left without feeling that I've been in the presence of greatness. He is an endless wealth of talent, not only as a guitarist, but one of the finest singers I've ever heard. Mark is not another SRV knock off. He's the real deal. He's toured with the Allman Brothers, and did a two year stint as guitarist for Dickey Bett's solo band, Great Southern. Besides that he's a hell of a nice guy. When you listen to this album, I promise you will buy everything he's ever recorded...

Next Texas Guitar Hero?,

This review is from: Telephone Road Houston, Tx (Audio CD)
I'm with everyone else here - Mark May is an awesome talent and should be heard by everyone who enjoys good blues guitar. This CD is a transition from the more traditional, Albert Collins-influenced stylings heard on the excellent "Call on the Blues" and the more rocking entries to be heard on the spectacular "Doll Maker". All three are well worth owning, and now that Amazon is finally stocking "Doll Maker", all fans of blues rock and Southern rock should really jump on the opportunity to own that one. I think it's one of the best CDs I've bought in years - I even like it more than "Telephone Road"!And you really should hear Mark play live if you get a chance - he'll blow you away!

THE "MUST HAVE" BLUESROCK CD OF THE YEAR!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Telephone Road Houston Texas (Audio CD)
Just when you think the state of Texas can't possibly put out another monster blues guitarist--along comes Mark May and the Agitators. With his own distinctive style (sorry no SRV imitator here) Mark blazes to the forefront of todays guitar gunslingers. "Telephone Road" is a delightful CD that rocks form start to finish and has enough diversity in the songs so that you don't get tired of playing it. Do you know how you get some CD's and for the first month you play it all the time and then it collects dust on your rack after that? That absolutely won't happen here. I've had this for six months and I still can't get enough of it. From the first track--the hottest version of Steve Miller's "Mercury Blues" ever recorded--which shows off the Agitators ultratight rhythm section--through several of Mark's own tunes, every song is a keeper. My favorites include: "Telephone Road"--the title track which features a hauntingly beautiful guitar lick throughout by Mark that calls out for his baby to come back to him. "I'll Be Around" and "Sweet Spot" show Mark's diversity in playing and "Lights Are On But Nobody's Home" let's Mark explore his guitar. One can definitely hear an Albert Collins influence here. Buy this--you won't be dissapointed. I would have given it six stars--but the computer wouldn't let me. If you get a chance to see them live--GO!!--They cook!!

Mark May is the Hottest Texas Roadhouse, Texabilly artist going by far!,

I first heard Mark on a whim at a local music store and was blown away by his playing diversity and talent. He creates incredible melodies, facings and chord progressions that are a definate treat for the ears. I actually dedicated "Don't give up" and "Sweet Spot" to a wedding couple once in Wisconsin, and everybody keep asking who was that, they're great.
I have seen Mark play numerous times since finding out he routinely plays at a bar within a mile from my house. I'm there everytime he's there. He also has very fine supporting muscians in his band "The Agitators". His side guitarist is one of the best I've seen and heard in a long time. Plays with incredible passion and intensity. His drummer, who I have also met, completes the music very well. If you are ever in Houston, do yourself a big favor and look "Mark and the Agitators" up. You will be so glad you did!

Great CD Start to Finish,
This review is from: Telephone Road Houston, Tx (Audio CD)
This CD starts with a great cover, ends with some acoustic slide guitar, and is filled with outstanding guitar playing, vocals, and song writing. Mark May is an extremely talented guitar player with a great voice who writes some unbeleivable tunes. The band is solid and the overall effect delivering his own songs or covers is unbelievable. I was able to see Mark May and the Agitators live in a club in Houston and was completely blown away. You would wear an album of this CD in no time. You'll find you will not only play this CD regularly, you'll listen to every song on it when you play it. Go to Houston and see this band live!

Telephone Road,

This cd as a whole is unbelivable. Ther is so many songs on this CD that get your spearits up. Telephone road and sweetspot are in a league of their own. If you likee stevie Ray Vaghn then you will like mark may. I could very easily see his music go to a whole new level. The way he can make that guitar sound is overwelming, I have never heard sounds come out of a guitar like that. I would love to see this guy perform live

Texas Blues - SRV style,
By Paxer2 "Paxer2" (Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Telephone Road Houston, Tx (Audio CD)
May is the real deal. All the songs are his, no covers. Good rocking Texas blues. His guitar style, and even his vocals, are strongly evocative of Stevie Ray Vaughan. I wouldn't exactly call May derivative, but he sure listened to a lot of SRV growing up and working out his guitar licks. But he can write songs and play guitar all on his own.

Telephone Road,

Mark May is without a doubt one of the very best new blues artists on the planet. Blues fans, especially musicians, will really appreciate the music. The rhythm section "cooks" and the second guitar is "smokin'". Hardcore blues fans will hear the Albert Collins influence occasionally, but that aside, Mark May's style is all his own and in my humble opinion, his playing is about as good as it gets out there. Check out his other CD's for sure, but for now, do yourself a favor and get a copy of Telephone Road.

This CD is pure blues pleasure from start to finish. Mark May is an extraordinarily talented guitarist, and on this CD he also shows he can write great songs. I've seen him play live, and I don't know when I've ever heard better guitar.
