Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

After a boy’s mother tucks him into bed, kisses him, reads him a story, and says good night, he begins another bedtime ritual. One by one, his favorite stuffed animals tell him about their day. Greedy Goose, Blue Horse, and Fat Rabbit recount their stories, described in the text with the repeated words “the who, / the what, / the why / and the way . . . / the whole wild thing. . . / turned out okay.” Told wordlessly in a set of illustrations, each little escapade involves a thunderstorm or a puddle. Finally, the boy looks back on his day, and his recollections tie all their adventures together. The succinct, precisely worded text reads aloud beautifully, while the illustrations recreate the cozy bedroom and remembered adventures in remarkably varied acrylic paintings that feature rounded forms and rich, warm colors. Best of all, the words and pictures leave room for children to engage imaginatively and verbally with the book by interpreting the visual narrative in their own words. An endearing bedtime choice. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

Review

* “There once was a boy who loved bedtime,” writes Fox (Two Little Monkeys), and within a few pages, it’s clear why: when Mommy gives “the last good night” and departs, the boy gets to snuggle up with his beloved toys to discuss their respective days…as much as this book is about being the center of the universe, it’s also about letting others hold the stage. A good friend, the final contented huddle tells readers, is also a good listener.”

Publishers Weekly, July 16, 2012, *STAR

A little boy loves to cuddle and chat with his stuffed-animal friends at bedtime…. The specifics are told wordlessly and in great detail in Stringer’s bright acrylic illustrations with just the right softly fuzzy surroundings. From Goose’s encounter with a pink umbrella to Horse’s deployment as an emergency picnic site (a blanket thrown over his back makes his rockers a fine tent) to Rabbit’s clothespin-pinched bottom, these adventures are charming and easy for little readers to follow…. Fox’s use of rhyme and repetition has a flowing cadence that moves briskly along while allowing time to savor the details of the innocent delight of a small child’s imagination.
A lovely, gentle story for bedtime sharing.”

—Kirkus Reviews, August 1, 2012

“Learning we are not alone in our foibles—and fears—is part of what comforts us, at every age, about good stories. To the rescue (once again) comes the Australian author Mem Fox (author of “Time for Bed” and the charming “Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes”). Here she freshens the sheets, as it were, with “Tell Me About Your Day Today,” featuring a happy boy in fireman pajamas who helpfully loves the routine clarity of bedtime, “the last kiss,” “the last story,” the “last good night.”” (The New York Times Book Review, August 2012)

“A boy loves all the nightly rituals of bedtime, but mostly he loves, after the last good night, sharing the story of the day with his stuffed animal friends Greedy Goose, Blue Horse, and Fat Rabbit…. While the rhythmic and snappy text sets up the action, it’s really the art that tells the story. Rich spreads done in acrylics stay grounded in the present, but readers piece the story of the day together through the pictures. Each animal’s perspective provides more clues until the boy’s own version brings it all together. This warm, bedtime read celebrates the comforts of sharing a story together and a day well spent.”

School Library Journal, September 2012

“The succinct, precisely worded text reads aloud beautifully, while the illustrations recreate the cozy bedroom and remembered adventures in remarkably varied acrylic paintings that feature rounded forms and rich, warm colors. Best of all, the words and pictures leave room for children to engage imaginatively and verbally with the book by interpreting the visual narrative in their own words. An endearing bedtime choice.” (Booklist, November 1, 2012)

Tell Me About Your Day Today is a beautiful, whimsical little bedtime story that is sure to send little ones off to sleep with a smile, all the while encouraging them to become storytellers themselves. This is what picture books are all about! The text and the illustrations work together seamlessly to tell the story. The text is beautifully written, with a marvelous read aloud flow, and when the pictures take up the tale of each toy, the story continues to be told with a charm and straight forward manner that will have kids eagerly following along.

I loved the repeating refrain as each toy tells of his day. "The who, the what, the why and the way...the whole wild thing...turned out okay." This is a great way to frame a day full of activities, and when the young boy's toys then ask him to describe his day; he thoughtfully looks back and remembers a day full of fun and drama as seen from his perspective. This book offers a great lesson in story and perspective, but most of all it gives parents a tool to interact with their children at bedtime as they examine the pictures and talk about their own days.

While the read aloud flow makes this good choice for story time, the amount of story that relies on examination of the illustrations makes this better suited for lap sharing. An excellent choice for any toddler or preschool collection that is sure to make both parents and kids look forward to bedtime just so they can share their own "the who, the what, the why and the way".

Hurrah! A bedtime picture book from Mem Fox. This one starts out, "There once was a boy who loved bedtime." Ha! Way to hoodwink 'em!

When the boy settles in to bed, he shares stories with his stuffed animals. "The who, the what, the why, and the way... the whole thing... turned out okay." Marvelously soothing repetition creates a calming effect. In a roundabout way, we learn of the boy's adventure jumping in the rain, repairing his stuffed bunny's damaged fluffy tail, and a picnic under a blanket fort in his living room. Acrylic illustrations feature lots of dark blues and oranges.

The endpages include the same sun pattern from the boy's favorite blanket. Add this to your repertoire of goodnight stories... it'll have kids nodding off in no time.

I ordered this for bedtime reading for my two and three year old grand children. I like the way it draws them into the thinking and opens up conversations about their days. Sometimes little ones don't know how to answer questions about their day, their time at a birthday party, or a trip to the park. This gives good lead in conversations!

I am just as enamored of "Tell Me About Your Day Today" as my two year old, who has made this delight book her new first choice at bedtime. What a revolution in perspective, that bedtime might be an OPPORTUNITY for loving contact with cherished toy-friends and sweet memories of the day just past. When I read the title, my little girl eyes me shyly and tells me some tidbit from her day. I'm always surprised by her pick, and grateful for this small insight into her perspective. The different perspectives the toys have on the same day are an amusing way to tell the story, and a gentle reminder to us both that everyone's perspective is different, even when you share the same events. Gentle is an excellent word for this book overall, which reads like a long warm hug, from the rolling poetry of the language to the delightful expressions and best of all, the re-conception of dreaded bedtime into a comforting social experience. A real winner. My only regret was having bought the Scholastic version, with thin, difficult to turn pages. So I've just bought a hardcover copy. We will keep the paperback for traveling because we would not want to leave home without "Tell Me About Your Day Today"!

Tell Me About Your Day Today
by Mem Fox, illus. by Lauren Stringer
(Beach Lane Books, 2012)

This wonderful bedtime story has the main character's friends (his stuffed animals) each telling about their exciting day. It's not a rhyming picture book, but it has this lovely comforting refrain:

And Greedy Goose
told him about her day--
the who,
the what,
the why,

and the way...
the whole wild thing...
turned out okay.

Each animal's story is that short, with beautiful spot (mostly) illustrations showing exactly what the who, what, why, and way are! But each story has drama! The details, like the band-aid over Fat Rabbit's bottom, are warm and funny.

And when the boy tells his friends about his day, his friends are, of course, prominently featured.

This is a lovely, beautiful bedtime picture book. Hooray for Mem Fox and Lauren Stringer--a great pairing!

This beautiful book continues to showcase Lauren's talents for producing a dreamlike state which resonates so well with children, and certainly with my own three sons. I have purchased most (all?) of her books for our famlly and as gifts for family and friends with children; our whole family loves them; "Fold me a Poem" is one of our favorites.

Mem Fox is by far my favorite children's author. I have been collecting her books (for children and adults) for many years. I also had the extraordinary experience of attending one of her Educator Presentations. She understands early literacy in a way that few other educators and authors do. This book is another treasure in my collection.
