This CD arrived today. I have been waiting for years to relisten to 'Doo-Wah-Diddy'. I was excited in the 60s by their sound and never understood why the Manfred Mann version overtook this one. The CD has a number of very pleasant (if ordinary) tracks plus quite a few rockin' songs. Typical songs of the early 60's. The lead voice is tremendous, and the unedited versions of 'Tell Him' and 'He's Got the Power' are great. Well worth the buy to hear this under-rated group again. Doo-Wah-Diddy is still my favorite though.

An interesting early sixties group,

The title track of this compilation provided the Exciters with a huge American hit. More recently, their version of Tell him featured in the movie The big chill. Back in the sixties, Billie Davis, a British singer, covered the song and had a UK top ten hit with it.The Exciters were even unluckier with Do wah diddy. It was only a minor American hit for them, but Manfred Mann covered it as Do wah diddy diddy and took it to number one in Britain, America and other countries around the world. Those are the two most famous songs here, but the Exciters also had minor American hit with He's got the power and Get him. This compilation contains most of their recordings for United Artists. A few could not be located otherwise they would also have been included. Their sound was typical of girl groups of their time. Others were more successful, but if you enjoy this type of music and you've already bought the obvious names, the Exciters are worth a listen.

Booming Vocals, Thumping Production,

This review is from: Tell Him (Audio CD)
Although The Exciters are best known for the popular hit "Tell Him," an upbeat number with almost ominous instrumentals behind the vocals, the real song to buy this disc for is "He's Got the Power." This song is a pure, plaintive, screaming R & B barnburner.
I rediscovered The Exciters through this song's inclusion in the recently released and excellent boxed set - One Kiss Can Lead to Another: Girl Group Sounds Lost and Found, and was floored by the sheer power of the vocals, and the almost Spinal Tap-esque production (turn it up to 11!)that literally tore my speaker in half. It's a real shame that there isn't a real outlet to display the deeper album tracks of some of these one or two hit girl groups and soul/r&b singers of the early 60s, because there is so much more to many of these fine groups than that one song that you might hear repeatedly on Oldies radio stations. Listening to this disc reminds me how much music in this genre has lived hidden on dusty unplayed vinyl for all these years. Rediscover it, play it, dance to it, and make it live again. Turn off the radio and turn on your phonograph.
