Action, adventure, sex & Marines - what more could you want?,
By baltimore0502 "Hon!" (BALTIMORE, MD USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tell It To The Marines (Paperback)
I don't think I've ever given an anthology 5 stars but this one was just so much fun to read that I'm rounding up from 4 1/2! I had only ever associated Amy J Fetzer with Irish medievals and did not realize that she even wrote military contemporaries. Since I'd never read ANY of her books, I decided to start with this collection of three short stories to get a feel for her style and to see if I'd enjoy it. Well, I certainly did! She seems to know her stuff when it comes to the military and the three Gunnery Sergeants she has created here are really yummy heroes!
Hot Conflict is the story of DJ McAllister and longtime friend Mary Grace Heyward. They met as teens, DJ the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks and Mary Grace, daughter of wealth and privilege. DJ has loved her for years but feels he's not good enough for her. Now she's been abducted while attending an event for her sister and her husband (the ambassador to Panama) and it's up to DJ and his team to save her. Will their time on the run through the Panamanian jungle reveal how they really feel about one another? 4 stars. Hot Landing Zone has loner Jake Mackenzie and his team dropping into the lair of Al-Qaeda terrorist Kali in SE Asia to extract scientist Dr Katherine Collier who was abducted in Hong Kong and brought to this island to create a chemical weapon. Unfortunately, a major storm strikes during the rescue and Jake and Katherine are swept to a deserted island and must await rescue. During this forced time alone together she reveals the loneliness and isolation she has always felt being a child prodigy and now an "egghead" scientist who has difficulty relating to others. And Jake reveals his loneliness resulting from being orphaned as a child and never really belonging anywhere. Are they two kindred spirits who belong together? Oh, yeah! 4 1/2 stars. My fave of the three was Hot Target - oh Rick!!!! I just really liked both Rick and Sam's characters! Rick Cahill and his team have their orders to extract Peace Corp volunteer Sam Previn from the Amazon. What Rick discovers when he arrives, is that Sam is actually a very pretty Samantha! But their chopper is fired on by drug lords/rebels/whatever (down there, take your pick!) forcing it to take off without Rick and Sam. And so they must trudge through the jungle to reach the alternate rendevous point. All the while becoming more and more attracted to each other. But Sam has a pretty big secret that she's keeping from Rick. Will it tear them apart once they return to the real world? 5 stars! I really only read this to see if I'd like her style, as I've heard really good things about her most recent release OUT OF UNIFORM and thought about reading it. Well, with this fun collection, I've made up my mind that she's an author I'd like to read more from and I will definitely be ordering OOU. Highly recommended if you love stories about men in uniform (and who doesn't)!

Loved it!,

I bought this book on a whim, never having read anything by Amy Fetzer before. I'm a huge fan of Suzanne Brockman's Navy SEALs books, so I thought I would give these novellas on hunky marines a try. I was hoping for an "OK" read, but was so pleased to find that these novellas were wonderful!! I loved them all, and now I've got to go track down Amy Fetzer's zillion other books. She's a wonderful writer and I look forward to reading her other books as well. Excellent dialog, super characterizations, and fast paced interesting plots. I couldn't ask for more. I loved it!

ooh-RAH!!!,
This review is from: Tell It To The Marines (Paperback)
Very upbeat, entertaining read!
These Marines are modern-day knights in shining armor--strong, capable, take-charge guys. The heroines are smart, strong, sexy, and witty, too. Crisp, authentic dialogue, good writing, delicious, steamy love scenes. Even some emotional epiphanies by these tough guys with big...uh...hearts. Gotta' tell you, I read a lot of romance novels, and this is one of my very favorites. It passes my Daydream Test, a measure of just how memorable a romance is based on whether I've, well, daydreamed about the hero after reading it. If you're looking for a few good men, and a good read, this one's a keeper.

Definately a keeper!,

I'm more of a chick-lit girl, but being a military brat, I saw this book and had to get it. The back cover intrigued me but the stories were what kept me going. Fantastic storylines that are believable and make you want to keep reading. I literally could NOT put this book down - I actually read it in a day. It made me think of all the Marines I know and remember why I love the USMC! The dialogue was right on and it was nice to have male characters that are tough on the outside and romantic on the inside. One that'll get your heart racing and make you thank a Marine for doin' his job! Ooh-rah!

Are men really this hot?,

This is the first book I've read by this author. I'm hooked. I plan to purchase anything she has written in the past or will write in the future. This book consist of three novellas. All three heroes are to die for hunks, that can't possibly exist in real life. They were too tough, too tender and just so yummy I wished they could have materialized. The sort of hero portrayed in this book is the reason I read romance. This one is definitely a keeper.

Not as corny as the cover would have you believe...,

This review is from: Tell It To The Marines (Paperback)
On their own, each of these novellas was fairly good. The dialogue was snappy, the heroines had spunk, and the Marines talked like real Marines. Hot Conflict, the first and shortest of the anthology, was a little weak, but Ms. Fetzer hits her stride in Hot Landing Zone. Jake and Kat's dialogue was just fantastic! I think I would rather have seen her expand each story into a full-length novel. The chemistry between the characters is good, but so are the military action scenes, what there are of them. I wish there had been more.
I think collecting these particular novellas together weakened them. Taken together, the similarities between them are more obvious. Ms. Fetzer does a good job at giving each of the Gunnery Sergeants his own distinct voice, but they all seem to share the same tastes when it comes to the bedroom. By the middle of Hot Landing Zone I could predict exactly how the sex would progress in Hot Target. I know romance novels are formulaic, but not that formulaic. But since the the sex was hot, I didn't mind it so much. Just don't read this anthology all in one sitting.

A True Winner!,

This anthology is a winner all the way around. Ms. Fetzer's read was not only fast paced with great action, it also offered exotic locations, and yummy men, and oh yeah...plenty of romance.
This book is actually made up of three short stories. Each story is unique and each hero is alpha and yummy. Oh...and most importantly each guy meets his match. Ms. Fetzer's read is one that highly recommend each story was very good and this reader could not pick a favorite. Ms. Fetzer has taken the military lifestyle and worked it to her advantage. As a military spouse it was fun to read a book that centered on military men being hero's. For a fast easy read you can't miss out on this book! Kudos Ms. Fetzer and I look forward to reading you again in the future. Official Reviewer for www.romancedesigns.com

I didn't think I would like this book. I'm not big on short stories but I enjoyed this author's book Naked Truth and this book is better. She does an excellent job of being the characters to life in minimum pages. The characters really clicked and you could feel their lives. I loved the Marine background. I would highly recommend this book to any romantic readers. Great beach book.

I couldn't believe all the perfect reviews this got. I was not impressed, and I loved the last book I read by Fetzer. I'm not doing summaries because they're already written in the product description.
Hot Conflict- This was the worst of the three. Mary Grace annoyed me, instead of making me feel sorry for her. She complained, she was rude, and I just didn't care about her. I didn't want her to end up with M.J. He deserved more than this ditz. Hot Landing Zone- This one was cute. But there were times that I wanted to say, What? That would never happen. The two characters would say things that were not realistic, not what people would say in that moment. Hot Target- This story was slightly better than the last. I loved that there was none of that insane pride and defense in either of the characters, like in the first story. These two were meant for each other, you could tell. But they too would say things that are not said during intimate moments. I wonder if this is an early book by Fetzer. The writing was just too immature and inexperienced, compared to her wonderful present works. |
