5.0 out of 5 stars Traditional country at its finest, July 5, 2004
This review is from: Tell Me Why (Audio CD)
This very upbeat album is the first of four Jann Browne albums that I know of, although I've only had the pleasure of hearing one other (It only hurts when I laugh, which I've also reviewed). The liner notes say that Jann's musical heroes are Wynn Stewart, Webb Pierce, Rose Maddox and George Jones. I'm sure all four would have approved of this album.

Jann's voice has similarities with Emmylou - no bad thing - and her taste in traditional country music also has similarities. To emphasize the link, Emmylou provides harmony vocal on Mexican mind. Other notable guests are Wanda Jackson, who duets on I forgot more than you'll ever know (the Davis Sisters classic from the fifties), and Iris DeMent, who provides harmony vocal on Lovebird.

Till a tear becomes a rose is normally associated with Lorrie Morgan and Keith Whitley. I heard Jann's version before I heard theirs but I'm not sure who recorded it first. Another song that country fans may recognize from other recordings is The one you slip around with - a country hit in the sixties for Jan Howard. The other songs (which may or may not be originals) are all excellent particularly the title track, Mexican wind and You ain't down home.

In all the hundreds of traditional country albums I've heard, there are very few that I'd rate ahead of this - and then only marginally. If you enjoy traditional country, this is well worth the premium prices I see quoted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tell Me Why, Stands the test of time, November 29, 2002

I have owned this Album since 1990. When I first bought it I gave it 4 stars. I have found myself going back to it time and time again. It just gets better with age.

After 12 years, having a CD that you still play every month or so, is a real find. The combination of the Honky Tonk sound and the lyrics is just outstanding

You should also look into her other Album, Count Me In.

5.0 out of 5 stars Serious Twang and Honest Artistry = THE REAL DEAL, June 27, 2002

THIS SISTER IS FOR REAL. I've owned parts of this CD for years and I keep coming back to it. Like one other reviewer wrote, I tend to play it over and over again, like I do with Trisha Yearwood, Alison Kraus and Mandy Barnett, not to mention Emmy Lou Harris. This is straight ahead country. Totally unpretentious. I love the harmonies and chord modulations. This is not "stamped out" music. It's easy to tell this stuff was written by an artist and performed by a true musician. Jann Browne is definitely the REAL DEAL. Very easy to get addicted to her stuff.

This is one of my favorite cd's and I would love her to come out with another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tambien!, September 13, 2011
This review is from: Tell Me Why (Audio CD)
I have also owned the CD since 1990 and it sits at the bottom of my pile, but it is still the very best!

I'm trying to find one for my CW singing/playing Novia as we speak.

Saludos.
