Fabulous Voice and Completely Underrated Talent!,
By DANIEL E MILLER (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tell It to My Heart (Audio CD)
Taylor Dayne is one of the TRUE singers out there with a range and a soulful delivery to boot. It's too bad that she hasn't received the accolades that she deserves. This album, however, has several Top 10 hits, showing that she has what it takes! The old standards "Tell it To My Heart" and "Prove Your Love" are the dance club-goer's dream. You should, however, listen to her remake of "Want Ads." You've never heard a remake like this in your life. The original artists, "The Honeycombs," are taking SUCH a back seat to the way she belts this one out. It's one of the rare cases when the remake is BETTER than the original. Taylor Dayne is one of the few artists that can sing a beautiful, slow ballad, and then hit you with a heavy-duty tough song with the same voice. Get this one if you don't have it already! You'd be surprised at what she can do and how she's been overlooked.

Stellar Debut From A Stellar Vocalist,
By Jennifer "The Writing Diva" (Texas, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tell It to My Heart (Audio CD)
Taylor Dayne has been one of the few artists that I always can't get enough of, though she hasn't been in the spotlight recently her music still lives on. I own her first two albums as well as her Greatest Hits and I'm planning to buy her "Soul Dancing" album soon this is due because Taylor has immense talent that goes ignored. With a range of vocals, Taylor's voice alone just gives you chills! Most people only know her hit "Tell It To My Heart" and forgive my friend for saying, "Isn't she a one hit wonder?" Oh my, if only she knew what hits pumped out of Taylor in the late 80's to early 90's. This is the perfect album to get you started into become a Dayne follower. With a strong debut album you can do wonders and this album proves that Taylor, with her Chaka Khan, Tina Tuner-ish vocals and Expose-ish dance grooves, could put two and two together to make a one of a kind unforgettable debut album. I think everybody has heard of the mega hit, "Tell It To My Heart" to get a gist of the drving force the song has, backed with synths and Taylor's strong vocals no wonder it was a hit! Followed with the sing-songy, "In The Darkness" is cute then the tightest bass line in "Don't Rush Me" (my personal fave) follows, giving Taylor a gruff edge. The lush, sweet ballad of hit "I'll Always Love You" packs a pretty punch then into "Prove Your Love" which is pure 80's pop at it's best, no doubt! "Do You Want It Right Now" features Taylor trying her hand at some scat plus giving some spine-tingling yells. My fave ballad off of this has to be "Carry Your Heart" this song is not to be miss, why it wasn't a single is beyond me! Taylor, backed with lush snyths, really "carries" her voice through the song, sounded angelic, feels like your floating on a cloud...:) A remake on a debut, how risky! But Taylor pulls it off, making it sound (gasp!) better than the original! "Want Ads" is the name and 80's pop dance fun is it's game, not one to miss! Now the last two songs, "Where Does That Boy Hang Out" and "Upon The Journey's End" didn't fare well with me too much..."WDTBHO" is a song to listen to once in awhile, Taylor again going for the sing-songy approach then "UTJE" is a nice ballad but doesn't measure up to the other ballads on the album. FYI: The man singing along with Taylor in "UTJE" is named Billy T. Scott, he was a backup singer for ta da! Mariah Carey in her early "Vision Of Love" days! I recommend this album to anyone who either loves 80's (like myself :) or just likes to hear some good music by a great vocalist. A stellar debut from a songtress that should be remembered!

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT,
By
This review is from: Tell It to My Heart (Audio CD)
Setting the record straight: The order Taylor Dayne's singles were released off this album were the title track first (reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100), followed by "Prove Your Love" (also #7), "I'll Always Love You" (#3) and "Don't Rush Me" (#2). Yes, I agree that "Carry Your Heart" should've been the 5th single. I remember hearing it on the John Garabeedian (sp?) radio show - he always had a segment called "Make It Or Break It" where he played an artists' upcoming single and listeners would call in and vote on it (as I recall, the final vote was "Make It"). But I think the record company eventually decided that four singles off one album was enough & I guess they didn't want to take the chance of the possibility the single would miss the top 10 since Lesley's (her real first name) first 4 singles had gone top 10. Still, she had a powerful, soulful voice that was severely under-rated. If ever there was an artist who deserves a comeback, it's Taylor Dayne!

I still love this debut!,
By Preston (nc) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tell It to My Heart (Audio CD)
Taylor Dayne's first album came out on Jan. 19, 1988, though they printed 1987 on the album. Bur this was a dynamic debut! She had such a soulful voice here. At times, she sounds like Mariah Carey did on her 1990 album. But this album also was one of Ric Wake's first hits as a producer; the same guy that would later do Mariah, Celine, Jennifer, and dozens of other artists. I still love the title song and Prove Your Love. But I still love I'll Always Love You, which sounds like it could have been recorded in Atlanta. Don't Rush Me didn't hit until 1989, so it was another hit in its own right. But I like other numbers like the sassy Want Ads and Where Does That Boy Hang Out. She has such an R&B voice that reminds you of the soul singers of back when. Her next album was more rock driven, very Tina Turner-ish, than this pop debut, but this debut really was dynamite all the way through!

Tell It To My Heart (1988),
By Chad DeFeo "(ChandlerBingFan)" (Philadelphia, PA USA) - See all my reviews

Taylor Dayne is one of the few divas to have a voice that could send chills throughout your entire body. Ever since 1988, when she released TELL IT TO MY HEART, her incredible debut album that went double platinum with the release of four spin-off singles, Taylor Dayne has captured the hearts of her millions of fans around the world. Her voice was so powerful and moving that every fan would most likely have tears in their eyes.
TELL IT TO MY HEART The first single from the album. Every solo artist in this world has to have a hit that is impossible to kill, like Bonnie Tyler's TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART or WHAM!'s CARELESS WHISPER or Madonna's LIKE A PRAYER. For Taylor Dayne, that impossible-to-kill hit was TELL IT TO MY HEART. It's a song that most likely had everyone up and dancing. This song is one example of Taylor's extraordinary powerful voice. IN THE DARKNESS Great song! If you should skip this one, then you are suffering from retardation. DON'T RUSH ME The album's third single. Another great song! I'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU The album's second single. An okay song. I also have this as a single on a 45. The B-Side is much better and that is WHERE DOES THAT BOY HANG OUT. PROVE YOUR LOVE The album's fourth and final single. Awesome tune! It also makes a great point: if you really love your girlfriend or boyfriend, then PROVE YOUR LOVE. DO YOU WANT IT RIGHT NOW If you want to dance, put on this one and dance your rear off. Great beat! CARRY YOUR HEART This song is my favorite from Taylor Dayne. This is yet another song that explains Taylor's powerful voice. I probably listen to this song about 8 times in a row before turning off the album. When you buy the album, listen to this one first! WANT ADS If this song was recorded back in 1985, it would have been perfect as the second theme song to DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN. The theme to DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN was Madonna's incredible INTO THE GROOVE. Taylor's WANT ADS also fits right in with DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN. Rosanna Arquette's character is constantly reading the personals and the wants. WHERE DOES THAT BOY HANG OUT As I said earlier, this song was the B-side to the single I'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU and this one is much better. Another song that can get you into the groove. UPON THE JOURNEY'S END (performed by Taylor Dayne & Billy T. Scott) Not a bad ballad. Ever since I became a Taylor Dayne fan, I have enjoyed this album to the furthest extent and further than that. It's an album that will have you playing it over and over until you wear it out. If you want an album you can really enjoy, this one is one of those albums.

Taylor Dayne's First Album As a Solo Artist,
By A Customer
This review is from: Tell It to My Heart (Audio CD)
"Tell It To My Heart", Taylor Dayne's first album as a solo artist, begins with the same-named single, which is also one of my favorite tracks on here. My other two favorites are #3 ("Don't Rush Me") and #5 ("Prove Your Love"). This CD is full of similar great ballads--some fast (like #6: "Do You Want It Right Now"); some slow (like #4: "I'll Always Love You")--all with upbeat, catchy lyrics and distinctive vocals. If you're a fan of pop/dance music from the 80s, then you'll more than likely enjoy this CD.

Expose-type music with a soulful vocal and stronger synths,
By
This review is from: Tell It to My Heart (Audio CD)
I did not know what to make of Taylor Dayne when I first heard her. All I did know was that her debut single, the title track to her first album, had a quick-tempo pounding keyboard synths, call it Expose tinged with a soulful vocal, a much more refined Tina Turner or Chaka Khan. The synth solo in the middle wouldn't be out-of-place on Expose's first album either. And the rest of the album delivered, from the upbeat dance numbers to the three sweet ballads. Heck, I envisioned all except "Where Does That Boy Hang Out" becoming singles.I wonder why "In The Darkness" didn't become a single, because its catchiness sports a beat and rhythm vaguely similar to Madonna's "True Blue," but surpassing that song. The horn-like rhythm synths and the sax solo really boosts this song beyond mediocrity. Now it's the next track, "Don't Rush Me", that became a single. I don't mind this funk-pop song, just its choice as a single. The reason is probably its placement between the previous song and the next one, which is... "I'll Always Love You" --don't worry, not the overbaked and overplayed ballad from The Bodyguard, is yes, a mid-paced R&B ballad, and it truly deserved to be the third single. Dayne's vocals soar, though her range is limited but powerful. I really enjoy this song, but it's nothing compared to the other two ballads. The second single, "Prove Your Love" is yet another catchy Expose-type song, but Dayne's vocals and the guitar solo in the middle make this worth remembering. The bass backbeat enhances another Expose-like number, "Do You Want It Right Now." "Carry Your Heart" is the second ballad, in the same vein as "I'll Always Love You" except more lush. This might be her "Take My Breath Away" without the bombastic synthesizers. The chorus has some of the best lyrics on this album: "You carry your heart/no one hold all of that weight on your shoulders/you carry your heart/and when it gets cold you run to me/you can't carry your heart alone." Dayne's upper range rings heavenly here. Oh, and dig that bridge: "Everytime you need a hand to hold/you'll have to give it up to get it back/you'll have to trust me long enough to know/I'll never let it go." Cue guitar solo. That's followed by her cover of Honeycone's upbeat 1971 hit "Want Ads," where she wants a"young man single and free/experience with love preferred/but will accept a young trainee" in response to her two-timing man who comes home with "lipstick on his collar, and perfume on it too." Will accept a young trainee... Uh, what's that address again, Taylor? "Where Does That Boy Hang Out" is the only song I might consider filler. Good beat, funky bass, but well... Wonderful ballad #3, "Upon The Journey's End" is another comforting soul number and my favorite. "If you find hard times in trouble, on the rocky road ahead /if you find nothing but sorrow/everywhere you lay your head/no, you won't find me a stranger/whenever you need a friend/yes I want to be there with you/upon the journey's end." This is a duet with some male R&B singer. "when all your reasons for living/have all but disappeared/and when the boat you've been sailing/you can no longer steer/There I will sail right behind you/warm wind for love I'll send." Why wasn't this a single? It would've shot straight to #1 no problem! Years later, yes, by virtue of vocal style, I do identify her as an R&B singer, but musically, a pop-R&B hybrid. Unfortunately, things didn't get much better than this, but that's for next time.

Excellent CD. I bought it for 68 cents! It was slightly used but all of the songs played well except for the last one. With shipping and handling, it came out to about 3.00 dollars. Not bad! I will definitely shop here again!

Upon the Journey's End!,
This review is from: Tell It to My Heart (Audio CD)
Taylor Dayne was one from my generation. This album has her hits like "Upon the Journey's End" where you hear her strong, vocal voice. Taylor Dayne's talent, voice, and contributions to music as a singer are somewhat forgotten.
Taylor's deep voice helps bring out "I'll Always Love You" which is another personal favorite. She sings a lot of love ballads and always with that rich voice. "Tell It To My heart" is another great hit song that gets better with time. Taylor's performance in her singing comes across as brilliant as it is and even more so today. "Don't Rush Me" is another hit song that displays her musical range. Her voice is deep and her songs are love ballads from a woman's point of view without being feminine and delicate. Taylor Dayne is a tough but talented singer who deserves more respect and this debut album of hers was an instant success and it shouldn't be forgotten as one of the classic albums of that decade. |
