Simply Put: A Gem,

I discovered the Miniature Tigers while at a small show in Richmond, with the headlining band Kevin Devine. This album is a stand-out all the way through. The best tracks are "tell it to the volcano" "dino damage" and "cannibal queen." Every time I play this CD in the background while hanging out with friends they always ask who it is, and that they really like them. I hope they come out with another album soon and it's as great as this one is.

I heard of this group from my sister who has the lucky opportunity to see indie bands at her local college. I am glad I didn't pass this one up.
To be honest, I wanted to take a deeper look at Miniature Tigers' music by conducting YouTube research. With the simple, jumpy witticism of "Cannibal Queen", I was hooked. If I were to compare this band to more recent, popular alternative rock groups, Miniature Tigers might be on par with Weezer with a bit of trademark soulful love seen with Hellogoodbye. Give it a try. Each song is unique and beautiful in its own right, and the album works harmoniously. It was an INSTANT favorite. You'll want to press 'repeat'.

It's hard to describe Miniature Tigers without using words like "catchy" and "melodic." Their sound may not be complex or ground breaking, but the sheer force of the tunes themselves make all that irrelevant. Not since Weezer or Fountain of Wayne have I heard tracks so irresistible. If that's not enough, they definitely got a seal of approval from Phantom Planet's Darren Robinson, the guitarist of that now defunct band, as he played lead guitar for them on their recent tour (and on their live Daytrotter EP).
The album starts off perfectly with, perhaps, their most solid melodic gem Cannibal Queen. Other stand out tracks include, sequentially, the title track Tell It To The Volcano, Hot Venom, The Wolf and Last Night's Fake Blood. I've listened to the album probably close to a hundred times already and the only song that I can't seem to get behind is Haunted Pyramid. 10 out of 11 ain't bad at all!

Saw MT open for Ben Folds 2/18 in Ann Arbor. I downloaded the album from Amazon before the drive out to the show. The album was better than the stage show but Ben Folds sounded odd too that night so it could have been the sound guy or venue.
That being said - the first half the Volcano is really really good. The later part didn't match up In my opinion but I'd recommend the album for sure. Give it a spin.

I bought this the day after hearing them open for Ben Folds (St. Valentine's Day, 2009). They had a good indie-pop sound. The album sounds pretty much the same as the show . . . not all faked up, a la Smashing Pumpkins. The music is full of clear sounds and semi-humorous relationship-centered lyrics.
I gave four stars because I'm not sure this album is going to still be catchy in a few months. The sound is pretty consistent throughout the album, and the music isn't terribly complex. The group recently "borrowed" Darren Robinson from Phantom Planet. Hopefully, he'll add some depth and the next album will be even better. Oh, and a side note, these guys are super cool. They were pretty relaxed on stage. After the show, they hung out with the crowd for the entire Ben Folds concert. |
