Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–Magee has a reassuring tone to her writing, affirming that a qualified expert is behind this series. Each book presents summaries within the context of real-world situations (questions to ask physicians, how to navigate supermarket aisles, what to order at a restaurant). This approach results in worthy information and delicious recipes, but other than a brief acknowledgement that some of the diseases may manifest in late adolescence, there are no discernible indicators that teens factor much in the target audience. There are no photographs and diagrams, demonstrating that the series may be best recommended to those who are specifically interested in the disease and are looking for workable lifestyle changes to allay their symptoms.

Product Description
Heartburn isn't just a minor inconvenience--it is very painful and can inhibit your sleep, affect your work, and make you feel miserable. Of course, if you are one of the 60 million Americans who get heartburn at least once a month, you already know this.

Heartburn happens when the lining of the esophagus comes in contact with too much stomach juice, which can produce a burning pain and injure the esophagus. There is a valve that connects the end of the esophagus with the stomach, which normally functions to keep the stomach acid where it belongs--in the stomach. But in people with frequent heartburn, this valve relaxes too frequently, allowing the stomach acid to splash up into the esophagus.

Tell Me What to Eat If I Have Acid Reflux begins with an overview of acid reflux. Readers get a detailed yet completely understandable explanation of how and why this condition begins--an explanation that is based on the latest medical information. The majority of the book is dedicated to all the ways that diet and lifestyle can bring relief and decrease heartburn, including an entire section with specific tips and recipes to help you during the worst times of the year for heartburn sufferers--the holiday season.

Tell Me What to Eat If I Have Acid Reflux offers dozens of healthful, practical, tasty recipe options for foods you never thought you could enjoy again, plus heartburn-savvy tips on navigating the supermarket, cooking in your kitchen, and eating out.

5.0 out of 5 stars It DOES tell you which food/drinks to avoid!, September 13, 2003
By A Customer
I cannot believe a previous reviewer mentions that this book doesn't tell you what to avoid for acid reflux. There is an entire chapter dedicated to the subject not to mention a couple of chapters that are all about answering common Q & A on acid reflux in general and diet and acid reflux. Plus chapters on eating out and getting through the holidays.

My gastroenterologist gave me a copy of this book and told me that it was the best and easiest read on the subject and he was right!

5.0 out of 5 stars Help at Hand, June 16, 2002
By A Customer
I have just been diagnosed with Acid Reflux and realised that I had to make drastic changes to my diet and lifestyle. I bought Tell Me What To Eat If I Have Acid Reflux and have found it very informative. Elaine Magee covers everything I needed to know and more. The recipes are useful as are hints such as chewing gum after meals and raising the head of the bed. I also didn't know what I should and shouldn't eat, but I do now and it has helped immensely. It is also great to know that I'm not alone and that there are millions other suffers out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magnesium supplementation cured me, July 17, 2005
By D. R. Schryer (Poquoson, VA United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
For decades I suffered from severe bouts of acid reflux and heartburn several times each week. A few years ago I began taking a daily supplement of 1,000 mg of chelated magnesium for another seemingly-unrelated ailment. To my pleasant surprise the supplemental magnesium not only cured the ailment for which I was taking it, it also completely stopped my episodes of acid reflux and heartburn. I have since learned that acid reflux is caused by stomach spasms which cause acid (which healthy stomachs are designed by nature to tolerate and utilize) to be ejected into the esophagus which is not designed to be exposed to stomach acid and burns when it is so exposed. Magnesium is a natural relaxant -- as well as a natural antacid -- and, therefore, it helps prevent the stomach spasms which are the root cause of acid reflux and accompanying heartburn. I am a research chemist, not a physician, so I cannot tell you to take chelated magnesium as I did. I can, however, report to you the beneficial effects which I experienced from daily supplementation with chelated magnesium. Those interested in learning of the many other benefits of magnesium -- including prevention and mitigation of heart arrhythmia, high blood pressure, asthma, osteoporosis, and diabetes -- should acquire and read Dr. Carolyn Dean's excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium.
