Telluride Bluegrass Festival: 30 Years

This is a rare collection of once-in-a-lifetime performances, enhanced by well-edited videography and spectacular surround sound. I'm very glad I bought it.

But it should have been so much more.

I'll get my negative criticisms out of the way up front:

- Too many performances are cut off or interrupted by interviews. With all the talk about this festival being "about the music," you'd think the filmmakers would have had more respect for it.

- Too much of the interview content is self-congratulatory and some of it is too "inside." Yes, it's the Festival's 30th Anniversary and they're all very proud. We get it. But this isn't a souvenir for people who were there. It's the one chance most of us who'll never get there will have to experience the festival. Show us more. Talk about it less.

- Several of the headliners who appeared at the actual festival in 2003, such as Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin, are not represented on this disc (probably for contractual reasons).

- It's too short. Less than two hours, with no extras whatsoever. Only one song from each artist's set (and no songs from some artists' sets), and one can't help but wonder about what was left out and why. (The only Flecktones song has Victor Wooten sitting out.)

Having said that, looking at this as a documentary rather than a concert video, I was thoroughly entertained and occasionally moved and astonished. So many of the legends of "newgrass" are here -- Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Mike Marshall, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, John Cowan -- playing in various combinations with their own bands, with each other, with young artists, that the lines blur from one song to the next.

It's a treat to see Meyer, Bush, and Marshall play "BT" from "Sort Trip Home;" the Alison Brown Band's spectacular "Going to Glasgow" fusion of jazz, celtic, and bluegrass presages her wonderful recent material. There's plenty of traditional bluegrass from Hot Rize and the Yonder Mountain String Band, and interesting performances from younger acts like Casey Chambers and String Chees Incident.

As a movie, the whole thing works pretty well, mixing all these performances with backstage chatter and commentary. Unfortunately, one of the benchmarks for judging concert videos is rewatchability, and the occasional interrupted/incomplete performance plus the inability to skip the between-song chatter makes the disc less rewatchable than it could have been.

The videography and editing are excellent, with the focus pretty much always correctly on whoever's soloing or singing, and without too much jumpy cutting or weird camera moves (the exception being String Cheese's song, where the editor apparently decided to get a little freaky, and just embarrasses himself).

The sound is spectacular, clean and detailed. The DTS surround mix puts you right on the stage with instruments all around you. Some people may not like this as much as I did; it does compromise the "liveness" of the sound, since the audience seems somewhat small and distant. I was thrilled by a live performance with sound this intimate.

This is great music, spectacularly performed; shot and recorded perfectly. It would be a 5-star DVD if the filmmakers had not chosen to repeatedly remove their focus from the music and spend so much of this too-short film telling us how wonderful the Festival is.

Appearing with all the gusto of the genre were Boomchicks, Alison Brown Quartet, Sam Bush & Friends, Kasey Chambers, Jerry Douglas Band, Bela Cleck & The Flecktones, Hackensaw Boys, EmmyLou Harris, Horse Flies, Hot Rize, Nellie Kane, Leftover Salmon, Nickel Creek, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tim O'Brien Band, String Cheese Incident, Telluride Bluegrass Jam, The Waifs, Keller Williams and Yonder Mountain String Band...wowed the crowd with heart-wrenching selections and crowd pleasers.

Several highlights are "PUSHED TOO FAR", featuring the Jerry Douglas Band always up for any of the festivals..."TWO MORE BOTTLES OF WINE", with EmmyLou Harris, Sam Bush & Friends bringing in a Delbert McClinton tune.."NINE POUND HAMMER" and "BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY" featuring Telluride Bluegrass Jam from them thar mountains with the entire cast of attendees at the festival...includes extensive interviews and behind the scenes footage...this DVD is well worth the trip to the "Pure Americana" of Bluegrass...gotta love it!

I was actually there at the festival....so biased one would say. Well actually no. No bias here, just simple truth - truly an amazing DVD. Sure, I would have picked some different songs for almost every act, e.g. Sam Bush and Nickle Creek, but frankly it certainly clues folks in on just who tremendous these artists truly are. One listen to the first song - Deeper and Deeper with Bela Fleck, John Cowan, Sam Bush....and you will see my point. This DVD will be watched/listened to over and over. Trust me.

There are some great acoustic music superstars on this DVD. Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, and Tim O'Brien are clearly at the top of their game. But, other than the one Hot Rize performance, this is not bluegrass in any traditional sense of the genre. It does present some really great extended jam band music, often with acoustic instruments commonly associated with bluegrass. A quick check of the credits at the end of the film suggests that there were, indeed, some true bluegrass artists at the concert, but they were clearly left out of the DVD lineup. If you like the Sam & Bela show, this DVD is for you. If you are looking for a bluegrass video, keep looking!

The BEST honeymoon anyone can ever have and truely the best music festival I have attended. I enjoyed the song selection and the behind the scenes interviews on the DVD. It was shot perfectly.

Only a couple minor glitches though. The DVD could easily have been expanded to a 2 or maybe even a 3 DVD set, being that Telluride is one of the major music festivals in the country, and the song "Nine Pound Hammer" by Telluride Cluster Jam could have been shown in its entirety.

If you are a fan of Bluegrass music you will love this DVD. It is more improvisational than traditional Bluegrass. Worth every penny.

I found this to be a very entertaining DVD. For those who love Bluegrass with a modern twist then this is for you. Only gripe I had was a little to much commentory even though it was informative. The musicianship is of the top order.

For fans of acoustic music it's hard to imagine a better festival than Telluride. This film features performances by artists such as the Waifs, Bela Fleck, the Horseflies and Left Over Salmon. In other words, the musical diversity is tremendous and is one of the hallmarks of the event. There are a few traditional bluegrass performers, such as Tim O'Brien and the Yonder Mountain String Band. But Telluride is really more about "newgrass" than Bill Monroe. So the reviewers who complained clearly had no idea about the festival when they purchased this product.

Along with the great musical performances there was some backstage footage and interviews which I found interesting. The interviews also provided some great info about the history of Telluride and what the people behind it are all about. Of course, the setting for the event is the majestic Rocky Mountains in Colorado's San Juan Valley. Yes, it would have been nice if this had been expanded into a 2 DVD set. But still it is great for what it is and very much worth buying for fans of this type of music.

This is the best bluegrass value I've seen and I'm generally not a big fan of this music experience. I purchased it as a gift for my banjo-playing husband and he has watched the DVD multiple times, downloaded the music, and generally said (several times) what a great gift it was! Some of the content he had looked for, but not found, elsewhere...so there was extra bonus.

I don't know,I don't know,I don't know,I don't know. The music was not dynamic. The interviews were boring. I love Bluegrass but this thing was so "not there" that I was going to send it back to Amazon. But then, we realized that it was pretty funny as a gag gift. I'll be giving this to a good friend at Christmas.
