I was surprised by this novel since one of my favorite books in Spanish is Bella y Oscura by Ms. Montero. I try to avoid "magic realism" which is pretty hard to do reading modern Spanish novels. If you like that genre, you will probably really like this book. I don't, so I didn't. The story as a lengthy extended allegory in which the plot is transparently held hostage to the message. Characters are conveniently disposed of to move the young woman along on her treck to the not to surprising finale.

It is well written, however; Ms. Montera is a skilled writer. If your tastes are like mine, I would recommend her Bella y Oscura which, it is true, slides along the edge of magic but doesn't fall into the maelstrom. I myself will try some of her other novels, but check the revues first to avoid all that muddy water.

This book came highly recommended from a nice woman in a local bookstore. It didn't look like the kind of book i usually read, but somehow i trusted her. And i truly enjoyed it!

It is the story of a woman, trying to save her very misterious world from decay. The amount of storyline that Rosa Montero packs into these 300 pages is astonishing, the pace never lets up until the last page.

I don't want to give away more. It is a very good book, in fact, i can't remember having read something better in many years. Give it a try!
