For king, country... and dragon,
This review is from: Temeraire Vol 1-3 Box Set With Bonus Poster (Mass Market Paperback)
Imagine if the Napoleonic wars had been fought using an air force... of dragons.
That idea is the root of Naomi Novik's Temeraire series -- an alternate-history fantasy that explores the idea of a Horatio Hornbloweresque navy officer who suddenly finds a dragon uprooting his life. Novik stretches credibility here and there, but the first three volumes of her series are a solid, intelligent, often amusing adventure story. "His Majesty's Dragon" enters the scene when Captain William Laurence's Reliant captures a French ship -- which turns out to have a dragon egg in its hold. And when the baby dragon hatches, it decides it wants Laurence and no other to be its rider. Unfortunately, accepting the dragon (now named Temeraire) means giving up his Navy commission and joining the Air Corps -- especially since Temeraire violently rejects the idea of accepting another rider. Both rider and dragon have a lot of learning to do, especially since Laurence has some very unusual ideas about how to treat his dragon. But as the bond between them grows and Temeraire grows rapidly to maturity, the Napoleonic Wars are raging -- and Temeraire's true power hasn't yet been shown. And in "Throne of Jade," an ill-tempered Chinese prince demands that Temeraire be returned to the Imperial family. Temeraire and Laurence are having none of that -- and when they can't tempt away Temeraire, both dragon and rider are sent to China, along with the prince and his entourage. But the journey is full of storms and assassinations, and China turns out to be no less dangerous as Laurence learns of plot around Temeraire. Having returned from China, Laurence and Temeraire don't even get to go home before being thrown into "Black Powder War." They're sent straight to Istanbul to pick up three dragon eggs sold to England by the Ottoman Empire -- only to deal with deal with wild dragons (who alone make the book worth reading) a treacherous Sultan, and the vengeful albino dragon Lien. The Temeraire series is what Christopher Paolini's books SHOULD have been -- a richly-drawn, intelligent series about the bond between a young man and his dragon. Novik still has some rough spots in her first three books ("His Majesty's Dragon" is rather short on plot, "Black Powder War" short on characterization) but they are undeniably fascinating meshes of what 19th century war would have been like if there had been dragons. She conjures up a pretty fascinating world, giving dragons different breeds, quirks, biological features (they blast acid, fire, even sonic waves), and relationships with their riders (one poor little dragon whose rider treats him like a disposable vehicle). There's even some delving into dragon rights -- are the dragons being treated like slaves? And despite long stretches of traveling over land and sea (often for months), Novik keeps it interesting with lush, detailed writing and some truly thrilling aerial battles aboard the vast dragons. On land, there's plenty of gentle comic relief ("I am afraid that some of them go there to drink, and keep low company." "Oh, you mean whores!") and lots of messy eating. Temeraire and Laurence are a study in contrasts. The human is mannered, thoughtful and very tied to society's mores, while the dragon has a child's enthusiasm, curiosity, honesty and stubbornness (and frankly he's an adorable little dragon). There's also a colorful collection of supporting characters -- fellow Corps dragons Lily and Maximus, the malignant Prince Yongxhing, the mysterious Tharkay, and many others. "Temeraire Volumes 1-3" is a solid trio of alternate history stories, with plenty of adventure, humour and a lot of lovable dragons. Definitely worth flying with.

Excellence in a box - plus you get dragons!,

Excellent books, I would definitely recommend them to friends, family, and strangers alike.
If you enjoy history whatsoever, this book gives a decent overview of the Napoleonic Wars - but with a fantasy twist, of course. But the book isn't just about history. While it does follow the timeline set by the Wars, the main focus of the book is on the most well-known of fantasy creatures - dragons. Anyone who needs another good book filled these winged beasts should read the Temeraire series.

This is an interesting concept: Basically, Napoleanic times as they were...except there are dragons. Clearly the author is a history buff of the times as she adds a precise flavor of the times and language of the times. The concept of sapient dragons partnered with humans has been done before (e.g. Pern, etc.), but this is a very original, and entertaining take.
That said, these first three books are the kind you enjoy for the prose and where you don't want to think a lot. Good concept, but there is absolutely NO depth to the human characters, even the main protagonist, and except for two dragon characters, little in the dragons' either. Even then, it is paper thin. Virtually everyone could be anyone else in the stories. Still, they are enjoyable reads and will keep you entertained (I read the first three back to back) as long as you understand what you're getting into. You could do a lot worse. BTW, the next two are considerably better. Still not much characterization, but the societies (human and dragon) are more fleshed out, there is good feel for how different those times were from ours, and "weightier" issues enter into play.

I'd heard, on and off, good things said about this wonderful series but I was amazed at the historical detail, the air of being 'there' during the Napoleonic Wars and...the dragonic aerial corps used to fight Napoleon's forces. What a fantastic world Miss Novik has created! Temeraire, the dragon, is utterly believable and an admirable character in his own right. I'm eagerly waiting the paperback of book 5. This is one series I will not miss!

I picked this set up on a whim and expected the usual faire.
To my delight this series set itself well above and beyond my expectations. The characters are wonderfully constructed and the setting during the Napoleonic War is inspired. The mix of history and fancy is near perfect and one can follow historical touchpoints using standard history sources for the period. The book touches on socio-political issues without preaching and in the end makes one think how far we have come and how far we need to go. Bravo!

Novik's Temeraire series is engaging, with characters you would like to meet, a great mix of historical fantasy, action sequences, and diversity training... how do you give "human rights" to dragons?

Great Fun,

I read the first book on a recommendation from a website and have been hooked ever since. A fascinating look at an alternate history where Britain fights against Napoleon using an air force of dragons. Each character is written well in a conversational style I often find myself repeating in my head long after I've finished the book (think British 'proper' for the time). The story spans multiple countries and does not fail to entertain. If you enjoyed other series along the lines of Dragonriders of Pern, then this is for you.

I had had these books recommended to me by a few different people, but for reasons I simply cannot explain I never followed through on those suggestions. But when friend of mine loaned me the first book for something to do, I ended up having to buy the set here or risk running out of reading material. The books are not terribly long but are quite engaging, at least if you have a love for both fantasy creatures and military history.
The point that caught my attention more than anything else was the ideas of logistics concerning the dragons in the setting. Their feeding, handling, and devices that came into use because of their existence are all very interesting. The depiction of large scale battles keeps the stories engaging, and the interactions between Laurence and Temeraire keep the story interesting all throughout. I highly recommend the series, especially for fantasy readers. The added real world setting does nothing but aid the story.

You never know what story will encourage a child to read. Although these aren't illustrated, the writing is vivid enougvh to imagine the action, and the dragons are so personable that we want to know them. The politics of another century are interesting and not as "loaded" as our own, and the economics of dragons not being paid for their work will bring up conversations about fairness and equality.
