An enjoyable read - very different!, July 4, 2000
This review is from: Tempest (Mass Market Paperback)
This novel was very enjoyable - the characters were well drawn, and some were not at all what I expected. It was primarily the originality of one of the female leads that makes this novel so very different! (I don't want to spoil it for you). If you like your female characters strong and independant, then you will definitely like this book. I have to say that I was strongly drawn into the stories of a few of the characters, but I did at times feel very irritated with the male leads (although that could have been the author's intention). All in all, I found it well worth the price - it's one of my keepers (the cover's great too! )

Three in One, May 13, 2011
This review is from: Tempest (Mass Market Paperback)
There were three stories in one here. Four friends go off to fight at Waterloo. Three come back. The fourth plays a role of jerk playboy/great friend/honorable warrior. In general Laura Parker's style was enjoyable but got too prosy. Much time was spent with the 3 couples being apart, which, in my view makes it difficult to build an actual romance. Conveniently, they all end up in Italy, yet issues where left hanging in the end.
Rafe and Della are very very newly wed. The war takes him away and he ends up terribly wounded. Their situation was compelling and it would have been nice to have more meat to their story. Kathleen and Quill also made for an intriguing tale, but they took so long to get together and once they were, nothing much kept me interested in their relationship. The worst relationship of the lot was between Clarette and Jamie. She was just a ridiculous 17 year old with an over the top infatuation. Jamie and he just didn't seem at all interesting.
In general this was a mediocre read. May pick up another book of Ms Parker's if I see one at the used book store.
