2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough revealed, nothing really solidified & I don't like Jane very much
So I kinda think I am over Jane True. I gave it the 3 book rule in & I know now that I don't care about what happens future installments.

I really enjoyed the 1st book & thought it had a lot of potential but I find Jane, her inner dialog & constant culture references less than endearing now & more like annoyingly precocious & so I don't really get what all the...

** spoiler alert ** Jane and Ryu are having some romantic issues. Not to mention, the secret lustful feelings Jane harbors for Anyan. Jane continues with her training until she finds out her mom has been killed. This sends Jane into a tailspin. She wants revenge. And it's only going to be satisfying if it results in Jarl's torturous and exceeding painful death. Because Jane knows he's behind it all. Clinics like the one Conleth was held in continue to be found. And the group of Julian, Ryu, Anyan and Jane head off to the Borderlands to investigate the clinic where Jane's mom was found. Along the way, Iris is kidnapped. Jane is attacked by a kappa (think TMNT, from the description - and Jane makes that comparison, not me!). She and Ryu have it out. Anyan's feelings are apparent to everyone but Jane. We find out Julian doesn't dig girls. And, we meet an "Original". (As soon as Anyan mentions it, we know Jane's mysterious tattooed lady is one, btw. That was no big reveal at the end, and I hope Ms. Peeler didn't think it would be.) Phaedra causes all sorts of trouble for our crew - including killing the first doctor that they find and trying to stop them all from getting to the Compound at the end. She's just pure evil. The jaw dropping stuff, though: (I'll save those spoilers for those who want to read them - if you do, visit my blog, where I detail them all!) WOW!!! It left me with really wide eyes and needing to re-read the chapter (or two) to make sure I read it all correctly!

I love Jane and her cast of friends. And I love her inner voice (aka her libido). We continue to get good character development from the author and decent story telling. I love who it doesn't matter that Jane has these feelings and is convinced of something (Jarl's inner evilness) and the author doesn't let anyone (**cough, cough, Ryu**) change Jan'e mind. I also love how strong Jane is, even though she thinks she's weak. Most of the time, the story is well crafted and easy to follow along. What could use a tiny bit of work is the balance between foreshadowing in an obvious, hit me on the head with an anvil manner, and the foreshadowing with such subtly that I am smacking myself for not seeing it. It seems a little off, unless the author wants it that way, that we have such polar opposites with some things. The existence of an Original - the minute Anyan mentions that type, we know what's coming. But other things were so subtly hinted at it was so well done. I felt almost schizophrenic after two more important revelations because of how well hidden and how painfully obvious they were. I had to wonder if the same person plotted those out.

Jane's libido is in full swing throughout the books. And it's great comic relief, as always (although it wasn't quite as funny this round, but it was still very good). **Spoiler alert here - not too major to leave out, but don't say I didn't warn you....** I am still a Team Ryu gal, so I am a little disappointed in the break between Jane and Ryu and how solidly she seems to have turned to Anyan, but it was well done. I don't feel like we are going to see the unfinished business, crappy love-triangle that often happens when we have the change in coupling status. At least that is my hope. What I mean is that Jane seems to come to terms with the fact that she cares for Ryu but doesn't want to be with him. It's not the sappy "oh I love them both" routine.

Our story here, with the continued slaughter and hatred of the halflings is interesting. We have a definite resolution in some ways, and yet the overall story arc continues. I appreciate the closure on one segment that the author gives us, while still moving us towards the next segment in a smooth and natural way.

I do hope that we haven't seen the last of Ryu, and that he's not going to simply be off ruling the Alfar with Nyx in the next installments. I am a Ryu-Jane shipper after all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, February 6, 2011
This review is from: Tempest's Legacy (Jane True) (Mass Market Paperback)
After saying goodbye to Ryu and leaving Boston, Jane's now been home for a few months to train on both offensive and defensive magical skills. She's making progress, and figures she has time to learn, but one thing she didn't count on was the horrific news she would be getting. She'll need her powers at full strength, as she gets wrapped up in a case dealing with brutalized females, both supernatural and human, that hits closer to home than she could have ever imagined. Despite Ryu and Anyan's protests, she becomes a very integral part of the investigation, putting herself in the gravest of dangers, and if she isn't careful, this time her number just might be up.

Jane truly becomes Ms. Jane True in this book. She is no longer content to just muster through her training, nor stay on the sidelines in the action. She really isn't the Jane we met in the first book anymore. I'm only hoping she continues on this path of gaining self confidence. Perhaps she may even start to see herself more clearly, as she is an incredibly awesome person. The things she endures are absolutely terrible, yet she continues on with a fierce determination. Granted, there were a few times where she seemed like she might crumble, but she never once gave in. Perhaps in time everyone will stop underestimating her, but at least for now it works in her favor, as no one realizes just how much of a threat she can be.

After the way the last book ended, the relationship issues between Jane and Ryu were inevitable. I'm so glad Jane is standing up for herself, and refusing to just accept his picture of her. Aside from her issues with Ryu there also is the glaring problem that she might actually love Anyan. However, she'll need to accept herself if she is to have any hope with him. As of yet, she just doesn't feel she is in Anyan's league, and that cannot possibly lead to healthy relationship. Of course, I'm still holding out hopes for them yet, but I just hope she doesn't jump into things with her current attitude, as that could be the recipe for disaster. I wouldn't want them to get together, only to fall right apart. I have more of long term picture of them in my mind and I hope it becomes "reality".

This series is the type where every time you think you have something figured out, a major curve ball throws you for a loop. I love being kept on my toes, and this book definitely did not disappoint. The next book should prove to be very good based on the ending events of this book. Some things could have easily gone a different way, but I am so glad they didn't. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance or urban fantasies with a lighter, humorous side, yet still have plenty of danger and action to cause just the right amount of tension. This series is quickly becoming one of my top favorites and I cannot wait to see what Jane gets herself into next. Bravo to you Ms. Peeler!

5.0 out of 5 stars Go Jane!, January 17, 2011

This review is from: Tempest's Legacy (Jane True) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jane True is one of my favorite heroines! She's not helpless, yet she's not a hardcore superhero either. She's an entirely believable character that I'd like to be friends with, and I cheered right along with her as she discovered her strengths along the way!

Jane has been training hard, and muscles her way into an investigation with Anyan and Ryu. Jane finds that it's hard to gauge your own progress when you're surrounded by warriors, but learns she's pretty hardcore herself! Go Jane!

The main plot is the group tracking down who is behind horrible experiments on halflings and purebloods, but the good guys always seem to be one step behind the bad guys and the labs are empty by the time they're raided. There worst part is that there doesn't seem to be any point to some of the experiments, and they're just an exercise in sadistic cruelty. No wonder Jane feels numb at times!

There's a great little side plot with Julian, one of Ryu's deputies and a fellow halfling. I've always liked Julian, so am glad that he had a little more to do in this one. Would love to see more of him in the future (hint, hint Nicole!). Yea Team Halfling!

Gave this a 5/5 as it kept me up much too late and I couldn't put it down! Just had to find out what happened next! As I may have mentioned a time or two, I adore Jane! She has a great sense of humor, is sometimes scared out of her wits but does what needs to be done, and finally resolves her relationships with the two men in her life. That part was important, as I get incredibly annoyed with characters who can't make up their mind and string their men along. (Yes, I'm talking to you Stephanie Plum!) Jane is brave and funny and loyal and self-deprecating and wonderful. Definitely one of my favorite series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next one!!, January 3, 2011
This review is from: Tempest's Legacy (Jane True) (Mass Market Paperback)
One of the drawbacks of reading things before publication date is that you know that you'll have that much longer to wait before the next book comes out. And trust me, once you finish the third book in the Jane True series you'll want to start the next one immediately. A lot happens in this book. A lot.

First off, this book rocked. Big time. Not only do we have some resolution to some of Jane's previous issues, but the ending of this book leaves us with the possibility for the plot to go just about anywhere. Jane really comes into her own in this book & it's really, REALLY refreshing to see a heroine who isn't all "gritty grit-grit" or "so tough that she chews up iron pipes for dinner & poops bullets" but doesn't fall into the "I'm going to cry my way to safety & let all the men take care of me". Jane isn't a pushover in this book, but she doesn't fall into that UF heroine cliche. Also awesome are the other women in this book- they kick just as much butt & I can't wait to see Jane interact with them some more. (I'd elaborate on who they are, but I don't want to spoil anything.)

Another thing of note is Jane's interactions with both Ryu & Anyan. Ryu's not taking too well to Jane's reactions in the previous book & it's good to see how Jane responds to Ryu's attempts to woo her back. I'm probably spoiling a little too much when I say that, but I have to say it.

I honestly can't find any faults with this book- I liked what Peeler did with it & I love where the direction is going. Maybe it's a little fangirlish, but it is what it is. And this book is awesome with a side of fun sauce. The only thing I regret about this is that my ARC will expire after a certain amount of time & I'll then have to wait to buy a copy to keep my collection up to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best one yet!, December 4, 2011
By
This review is from: Tempest's Legacy (Jane True) (Mass Market Paperback)
This series just keeps getting better and better.

Jane True has finally realized what I have known since book one: Anyan is the man. That's right. THE MAN. Jane now accepts that she has a massive crush on him. And probably always has. The only problem is that he has been gone for two months. She hasn't seen him since the end of the last book. And when he does show up again, it's to break the news that her mother is dead... a victim of one of those terrible testing facilities we learned about in Tracking the Tempest. Jane joins with Anyan and Ryu as they investigate the murder and try to ferret out other similar compounds.

I loved this book. There was so much delicious angst. Ryu and Jane still have a lot to resolve. And it isn't all pretty. Also, we now have her feelings for Anyan in the mix. I've thought Anyan's feelings for Jane have been obvious since the beginning, but there are a lot of hurdles to overcome and it's all quite a ride.

The part of the story featuring the compounds is pretty disturbing. And it really hits home as a character we know and love gets caught up in it all. But this is such fantastic storytelling. I couldn't put it down. Even as dark as it gets at some point, there is still this fantastic humor infused throughout. Jane's internal ramblings and constant interjections from her libido make me laugh out loud. Plus, it's so satisfying to see how she has grown. Our little halfling has come a long way, both in power and personal growth.

But if I don't get some payoff on this sexual tension soon (you know the one I mean) -- I think I may just implode. Seriously. It's killing me. 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Favorite in the Series, January 24, 2011
This review is from: Tempest's Legacy (Jane True) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jane True is back in Rockabill. Her relationship with vampire beau is on the rocks. And when Anyan finally returns to town, he delivers devastating news to Jane that will affect her forever. But Jane puts aside her feelings to help investigate the mysterious kidnappings of females, both magical and human alike. The kidnappers are using the women in sadistic, nightmarish ways. While growing her magical strength, dealing with her personal dilemmas and the kidnappings pushes Jane to the breaking point.

Jane gets to finally show off her abilities. But she has also been bottling up her emotions, which the ever-sympathetic Anyan doesn't miss. The two have incredible chemistry that steam up the pages. Jane's spunky and self-deprecating ways are evened out by Anyan's quiet, confident strength. Her characters are exceptionally vivid.

This is my favorite installment in the Jane True series so far. Peeler amps up the drama, emotional angst, and action - yet delivers more laughs and fun surprises. Shocking twists, wacky characters, and plenty of magic - it was impossible to put down. I was sad to have it end. And I'll be waiting impatiently for the next installment. Urban fantasy fans should not miss this exciting and fun series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Whet your appetite for the next Jane True..., January 12, 2011
This review is from: Tempest's Legacy (Jane True) (Mass Market Paperback)
Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy:

[...]

I had mixed feelings throughout this book, but not because of the characters or the writing. Simply put, this is a dark book for the Jane True series, with difficult subjects and situations. Therefore, it evoked a mixed bag of emotional reactions. I still laughed at Jane, admired her relationship sense, and enjoyed her developing powers, but I already hated Jarl so much before this book even began, reading this installment in the series was difficult. Fans of Jane will not be disappointed, and Peeler doesn't toy with our emotions when it comes to love triangles or super-villains, but I don't think I'm going to be unequivocally happy with the series until I read a book with Jarl's blood on the pages.

TEMPEST'S LEGACY opens a month after Jane and Ryu's break-up. Very few relationships end with a clean break and unblurred margins, and Jane and Ryu's is realistic in the most painful sense. The doubts, emotions, and make-up/break-up cycles are familiar parts of a relationships ending (or just taking "a break," which brings the emotional rollercoaster back to "doubts"). I never felt like Peeler crossed the line to melodrama, but she writes very realistically about a painful subject, and succeeded in bringing my own emotions to the foreground.

Jane's attraction to Anyan was another well-written, tense subject, and I have to say Peeler writes the best uncertain crush I've read in a long, long time. Jane is never sure of the nature of Anyan's affection (and seeing as how the man prefers to hang out around Jane as a hellhound, I think her confusion is reasonable). The chemistry and uncertainty with Anyan kept me going through the dark parts of the book, just as Anyan himself supports Jane.

By "dark parts," I'm not referring to Jane's break up with Ryu. Jane's ability to navigate relationships, while not without slip ups, is a pleasure to read. While I don't want to offer any spoilers, this book contains genuine grief, loss, and despicable cruelty. Even writing about it euphemistically gets my teeth clenching and heart rate up. Seriously, Jarl needs to die. Slowly. All of the over the top wonderful aspects of this book were necessary to carry me past how much I loath Jarl and am completely impatient for his messy demise.

The further I read into the Jane True series, the more impressed I am by Peeler's deft writing and emotionally savvy plot lines. She has created a world that I would like to live in (despite the despicable Alfar), and a cast of characters I would love to be friends with. Finishing this book would have been easier if I could have rush right into EYE OF THE TEMPEST, but Jane and her friends have given me enough to hang on to until August.

Sexual Content: Explicit sex, threats of rape, descriptions of rape.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, January 3, 2011
This review is from: Tempest's Legacy (Jane True) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jane True is back in Rockabill and her days are filled with work, training her powers and spending time with her new magical friends. Anyan hasn't contacted her for weeks and Jane's relationship to Ryu is more complicated than ever.

So when Anyan all of a sudden appears again Jane knows that he doesn't come with good news. Soon they are right in the middle of a fight against a gruesome enemy who kidnaps females and then brutalizes them in horrible and inhuman ways.

Will Jane True, Anyan and the others be able to stop the cruel happenings and will she finally embrace her unusual powers?

When I started reading "Tempest's Legacy" it took me only a few pages to get back into the story and it was like I had just finished book #2 in the Jane True series. Right from the first pages on I enjoyed reconnecting with Jane and all of the other characters.

I loved reading about the changes in Jane's life and how in the end she finally embraced her powers. It was fascinating to learn more about the magical world and the power games that go on in it. Some parts of the book are horrible and to see the cruel things that happened to the females was heart-breaking. Jane was amazingly strong when it came to dealing with what was going on and I loved that she finally became more active and fought back. Jane's romantic life was just as complicated as the rest however I was very pleased with the changes and with seeing more of Anyan (I have a tiny crush on him:)).

There are some thrilling action scenes and also some lovely, quiet scenes. All in all the book was darker than the two before but there were also some lighter moments and hope for a more peaceful future.

Nicole Peeler's writing style was once again very engaging and I was always interested in reading on. At the end of the story a new storyline is opened and I think Jane's life will get even more dangerous because of it. Just like the two books before in the Jane True series "Tempest's Legacy" made a deep and lasting impression on me. The story and the way it's told is very powerful and makes me think about what was going on in the book and similar things that happen in real life.

cover

Love it. All of the covers in this series are fantastic.

final appraisal

"Tempest's Legacy" is fascinating, dark, thrilling and powerful.

The Jane True series amazes me once again through a unique story, captivating characters and the way Nicole Peeler manages to make the reader feel part of the world she created.

It was a joy to read how Jane True decided to fight the evil of her new world and how she began to embrace her extraordinary powers. I'm very excited to read how the story will go on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Girl you know it's True!, January 3, 2011
This review is from: Tempest's Legacy (Jane True) (Mass Market Paperback)
I was nervous leading up to the release of this book- I keep waiting for the slump. You know how it comes to a point where the author just slips a little part way through the series? This is NOT that book. Hurrah!

Nicole Peeler has a knack for giving her characters fabulous voices. You know when you're reading one of her books, she makes her characters so real and so like the people you might know in everyday life (if you have a bunch of magical, slightly offbeat nutters for pals). Not many authors have the ability to make a hairy, six armed, multieyed, nonvocal character adorable, but she does it. The books sucks you in and holds you there- I literally read it in one sitting.

Jane True grows not only in power, but as a person in this book. I don't want to spoil the book or just repeat the summary off the back of the book, but read it, read it, read it. If you haven't read the whole series, you should.
