5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Leadership Lessons
Having had the distinct pleasure of knowing Robben and Sally Fleming, I was anxious to read his book published by the University of Michigan Press. I was not disappointed! To the contrary, once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. 3.0 out of 5 stars Robben Fleming's Tempests into Rainbows
Robben Fleming's autobiography is well-done and well-written. It is interesting to read the personal history of one who has lived most of this century and who certainly has been an influential university president.

This review is from: Tempests into Rainbows: Managing Turbulence (Hardcover)
Robben Fleming's autobiography is well-done and well-written. It is interesting to read the personal history of one who has lived most of this century and who certainly has been an influential university president.

The Tempests part relates primarily to the time in the late fifties and sixties, when there were student riots, black rights movement, sit-down strikes and the like. Mr. Fleming takes credit for alleviating the impact of the rioting & the unrest on the campus.

This publication is recommended for those who enjoy reading biographies, for those who are interested in the sixties (particularly from the non-student point of view), and for those who are interested in the history of Michigan universities.

Having had the distinct pleasure of knowing Robben and Sally Fleming, I was anxious to read his book published by the University of Michigan Press. I was not disappointed! To the contrary, once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. The many wonderful qualities of former U-M President Fleming come through loud and clear in his autobiography: his intellect, modesty, charm, patience, wealth of experience, leadership and humility. His book is very well-written and his story telling instantly captures your attention and imagination.

This book is not dated as the lessons of Robben Fleming are as current today as they were in the 50's through the 80's. His leadership crucibles are timeless.

I cite Robben Fleming and also his vice president for academic affairs, Allan Smith, in my book Real Leaders Don't Boss which will be released by Career Press in February 2012. They both had a major impact on my career and made my days in Ann Arbor truly memorable. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in law, arbitration, higher education, leadership, raising a family, marriage, faith, the value of serving one's country and living life to his fullest.

Leaders like Robben Fleming were "striking figures on the national stage" and I feel blessed to have known him. His is a terrific book!
