5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reproduction of original portfolio
This reproduction of the famous Temple of Flora is of exceptionally high quality. Taschen, who usually pull out all the stops for their releases, has recreated this portfolio at it's original oversized edition with all prints presented loose and on archival paper. The package also contains a book with a history of the work and comes packaged in a lovely clamshell box...

3.0 out of 5 stars Inventory Your Set for Missing Plates
I was quite pleased with this set of beautiful plates until I inventoried them against the history provided in the included booklet. I was missing the first plate! It is almost certainly not Amazon's fault as the outer and inner boxes were cellophane-sealed. So this is an "omission" at the production level. Really a disappointment and a hassle as I always HATE having...

A wonderful item for collectors of botanicals or book lovers.

It is almost certainly not Amazon's fault as the outer and inner boxes were cellophane-sealed. So this is an "omission" at the production level. Really a disappointment and a hassle as I always HATE having to go the post office and stand in line for send-backs, and especially this time of year. If the replacement set is missing a plate, the thing goes back for a refund...this is nice, but the hassle-factor is always a prime consideration for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Book I Bought in Botanical Illustration, September 4, 2011
This review is from: The Temple of Flora : Robert John Thornton (Hardcover)
When I bought this book, I had no books in botanical and ornithological illustration--books on Natural History prior to the advent of photography.

I now have 225 and counting.

This book wet my appetite. Or I should say, it was Angelica Taschen of Taschen Publishing, the partner and wife of the famous publisher, who turned me onto the subject. Ms. or perhaps Dr.Taschen is a biotanist or the like, and she has directed Taschen's advent into the publishing of books on botanical illustration.

So I would say any Taschen book on this subject is a good value as it is definitive.

The Taschens (along with Prestel) have also brought forth the works of H.Walter Lack. Dr.Prof.Lack is responsible for an explosion of fine books, bring forth books that heretofore had not yet been published, books out of the castles and major state libraries of Europe.

And these books are in full color.

That is the hallmark of this book which is a clamshell box with a book narrating each print, accompanied by a frame-able fine art print of the assemblage by Robert John Thornton.

The art is largely superlative, and the print copy is true in its full color which is striking. I know, for I have compared them with a famous international dealer who has the largest offering of Thornton prints available in the world today.

Yes, you can buy a standard book depicting this work of art, but there is nothing as grand as a clamshell containing the full collection.

The scale and quality of this book and the associated plates are incredible. The plates are reproduced so well that they will make beautiful framed art to hang in a special place. This is a showpiece of art.

I bought these prints for my brother and sister-in-law as a Christmas/House Warming present. They are really beautiful and really big. There are quite a few prints in here as well. Overall, I'd say this was a great value, and my bro and sis seemed to like the present. Domino magazine recommended it before they went defunct, too.

I read about this collection in Vanity Fair and bought one as a gift. Loved it so much I ordered another one for myself. Beautiful saturated colors that make this not only gorgeous to look at, but perfect for framing several of the prints and hanging them in your home.
