5.0 out of 5 stars One of BBC radio's most popular serials, July 16, 2005

From 1938 to 1969 crime novelist and detective Paul Temple and his wife Steve, solved case after case in one of BBC radio's most popular serials.

They inhabited a sophisticated world of chilled cocktails and fast cars, where the women were chic and the men wore cravats, a world where Sir Graham Forbes, of Scotland Yard, usually needed Paul's help with his latest tricky case.

The Lawrence Affair: Paul Temple and wife are staying in the fishing village of Downburgh, Steve gets the uneasy feeling that she is being watched by a man at Fisherman's Point. A pleasant boat trip turns into a nightmare when their craft gets shot at, and the boatman himself is later discovered drowned at sea. Back in London, the daughter of the head of MI5 has disappeared, and Sir Graham brings the matter to Paul's attention. Could there be a connection between this and the events in Downburgh? In finding out, Paul and Steve find they are in peril once again.

Enjoyable mistery case!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Another brandy, Sir Graham?", December 15, 2009
Writer Francis Durbridge blends two contrasting settings in this Paul Temple mystery: a south coast English fishing village and London's West End. At Downburgh there are boating thrills and spills, drownings, falls from cliff tops and contraband activities. In London there are night clubs, Harley Street specialists, Scotland Yard and the disappearance of the daughter of the head of CI5 to be investigated. All are interrelated, and Paul Temple becomes convinced that "the solution to the Lawrence mystery is to be found here at Downburgh".

Besides Peter Coke and Marjorie Westbury, cast members include Dorothy Holmes-Gore, Brewster Mason, Manning Wilson and the versatile Arthur Ridley who takes a turn as Det. Inspector Vosper.

This BBC radio production dates from 1956, a period when English cinemas and night clubs had severely reduced patronage whenever a Paul Temple episode went to air.
