Awe-Inspiring Improvisation from Shawn, The Swede, and Sipe.,
By
This review is from: Temporal Analogues of Paradise (Audio CD)
"Temporal Analogues of Paradise" showcases Hellborg,Lane, And Sipe at their improvisational best. If you want tightly structured songs with basic harmonies then don't get this. However, if you desire three musicians exploring all that they are capable of individually and as a collective then buy this immediately. Not since Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Between Nothingness and Eternity" has there been a live recording with so much spontanaiety. The first half of the "Part One" is a showcase for Jonas. Slapping, Plucking and Harmonics are thrown in with the normal fretless bass manuevers. Shawn and Sipe give Jonas plenty to work with. After the mind boggling bass work , Sipe(apt q-258) is given room to let fly and he does. The rest of part one is the three linked as one moving through different timings and rhythm figures. The interplay is great considering that this is pure improv. "Part Two" is the rhythm section allowing Shawn to do whatever he wants. The first half he plays with melodic pupose with a nice clean tone. At about the twelve minute mark of Part Two watch out. The rhythm section locks in together and grooves while Shawn goes to where few have dared even dream. The pyrotechnical displays that Shawn breaks out are unbelievable. The band allows room for a few breaths but each solo excursion is guaranteed to take it away immediately. Shawn pulls out all of the stops: unreal alternate picking, Holdsworthesque legato, sweep picking and Shawn's own combining of legato with sweep( What he calls one note on a string) are all part of the insanity. The disc ends and you are ready to cue it back up instantly. There are offerings for guitarists, bassists and drummers. The largest lesson is in how to be an individual within the collective. I would say that it is how to improvise but that can't be taught only learned. Get this one now.

The ultimate instrumental jazz-fusion trio,

The combination of Hellborg, Sipe, and Lane is fluid and sublime. The two movements move from serene and soothing passages to dizzying displays of viruosity and genius. If you enjoy inspired percussion and/or guitar you must buy this album.

Classical mastery of fusion rock,

The overall feel of the album is agressive - progressive. Shawn Lane is the fastest most musical guitarist on the market. Jeff Sipe should be a common household name with his unreal hand speed and pure chopping ability. The album as a whole consists of two half-hour "movements". These are truely moving movements. Beware, this album os not for the closed minded musical listener; in order to fully appreciate the genious envolved with this music, you would have to see them play live. But this is the next best thing. Buy this album. It will change your life if you let it.

Awe-Inspiring Performances,
This review is from: Temporal Analogues of Paradise (Audio CD)
It's no secret that Jonas Hellborg is one of the most inventive bass players on the scene today, and his work output is as diversified as it is vast. This album, a product of live concerts recorded in Europe and assembled in two long tracks (1st and 2nd Movements), displays almost telepathic interplay between Jonas and drummer Jeff Sipe (aka Apt. Q-258 - his work with the Aquarium Rescue Unit is also worth a listening), all intertwined with the precise interventions of guitarist extrordinaire Shawn Lane. There are many shifts in mood and dynamics, but there's plenty of space for each musician to shine through. The album editing didn't leave any noticeable crossfades, so it hardly sounds as a mere sound collage - unfortunately, the recording quality (specially Shawn's overtly ambient guitar tone) is not remarkable. This is adventurous music for adventurous listeners. If you want to embark on a "mistery tour", full of twists and turns, just sit back and relax - and let this amazing musicians guide you.

This cd is proberly my fav fusion cd of all time. It is just 3 players playing just 2 improvisational pieces. The music has so much depth and the understanding between each player is beyond words. This cd has some of the most beautiful sounds ever recorded. I totally recommend this cd and hope you get as much listening pleasure form it as I do.

This is an album of three incredible musicians at the height of their powers in a live setting. Lane's playing is almost beyond description. From clean comping to incendiary hyper-speed runs, Lane covers it all with conviction, emotion and breathtaking virtuosity. Hellborg's bass sound warm but packs plenty of punch as well. Hellborg is an amazing bassist who has a certain style that is very endearing. Sipe's drumming is solid without gettng too busy, which is helpful when you've got Lane and Hellborg going nuts in certain spots. There are plenty of dynamics and lovely melodic interludes along with the fiery playing. For fans of power trio interplay along the lines of classic Cream, Hendrix Experience, etc. this is as good as it gets. This defines the state-of-the-art for power trio improvisation. Nuff said!

WHAT ALL THE MUSIC SHOULD BE,
This review is from: Temporal Analogues of Paradise (Audio CD)
Everything's here: from celestial moods to the power of metal; from fast fusion to the most beautyful melodies ever heard. Jonas Hellborg is one of the most innovative musicians of our time, and so can be said about Shawn Lane. Every record made by these monsters it's risky and brave, and this is the hardest, jazziest, and well crafted live jam made by them. Bonus: the music it's always spiced up with middle-eastern, greek and oriental flavours, so if there's no name for this kind of music, what about World-jazz-fusion? A must have for high emotion fans!

Shawn Lane Left His Mark On This One!,
This review is from: Temporal Analogues of Paradise (Audio CD)
First of all, I want to say that it's a shame about Shawn Lane (died on September 26, 2003). Music lost a true visionary, virtuoso, and unfortunately one of guitar's best kept secrets. Not many people even know who he was. Those that did know him and were fans couldn't help to be inspired by his playing. What a loss....I'll miss hearing him play. For the review of this album, I'm going to say that it's simply amazing. Here are three wonderful musicians (e.g. Shawn Lane, Jonas Hellborg, and Jeff Sipe aka Apt. Q-258), and they're playing this improvised music that just sounds so cohesive that you would have never thought that this was improvised. Jonas and Jeff are playing with their usual fury and precision that we'd expect from two of fusion's most respected musicians. Then there is Shawn Lane. Who's on another planet completely. If you took Shawn Lane out of the picture you'd have a very dry sounding album. Shawn adds so much color here. He can be so melodic and then turnaround and be aggressive. In other words, he does what's best for the song rather than what's best for his die-hard fans. Yeah, sure there is the usual seamless blindingly fast scale runs, but they complement the music like most anything he has ever played. Most people here him and say "Oh, well he's just too fast," but what they don't realize or aren't taking into consideration is the fact that what he's playing is so melodic, reguardless if it's at a million mph or 3 mph. Listen to this album not because you're a Shawn Lane fan or a Jonas Hellborg fan but listen to it and understand it's beauty, because when you do understand then you'll be glad that you did.

WOO HOO!,
This review is from: Temporal Analogues of Paradise (Audio CD)
All of the previous reviews are true. This is an EXCELLENT cd! All of these guys are great! I'd heard that Shawn Lane is one of Buckethead's favorite guitarists and I can see why. Wow. And that Jeff Sipe is one of the best drummers I've heard. Truly awesome stuff. It would be unbelievable to see these guys live.
