Imaging of the temporal bone has recently been advanced with multidetector CT and high-field MR imaging to the point where radiologists and clinicians must familiarize themselves with anatomy that was previously not resolvable on older generation scanners. Most anatomic reference texts rely on photomicrographs of gross temporal bone dissections and low-power microtomed histological sections to identify clinically relevant anatomy. By contrast, this unique temporal bone atlas uses state of the art imaging technology to display middle and inner ear anatomy in multiplanar two- and three-dimensional formats. In addition to in vivo imaging with standard multidetector CT and 3-T MR, the authors have employed CT and MR microscopy techniques to image temporal bone specimens ex vivo, providing anatomic detail not yet attainable in a clinical imaging practice. Also included is a CD that allows the user to scroll through the CT and MR microscopy datasets in three orthogonal planes of section.

This beautifully illustrated book attempts to explain the complex anatomy of the temporal bone using CT and MR microscopy. This is a novel approach, as prior temporal bone atlases have primarily relied upon histological sections. The core of the book is sectional imaging in the four planes of temporal bone imaging (axial, coronal, Poschl, and Stenvers). Detailed anatomical descriptions accompany the imaging.

Purpose
This purpose is to facilitate understanding of the anatomical relationships in the temporal bone using 3D reconstructions generated from imaging microscopy data, and using multiplanar sections. This is a worthy objective, and the book is useful to both otolaryngologists and radiologists, as it presents detailed anatomy in the format of cross-sectional imaging.

Audience
This book is written primarily for radiologists, but it is useful for all students of temporal bone anatomy as well as practicing otolaryngologists.

Features
An introduction to the imaging techniques begins the book, information that is probably most relevant for radiologists. The book then delves into detailed temporal bone anatomy using 3D reconstructions from imaging microscopy. The third section presents cross-sectional imaging in the four classic planes of temporal imaging. The book also includes an anatomy tutorial. The entire book is innovative in its approach, successfully integrating a cross-sectional imaging atlas with an anatomy atlas.

Assessment
This will be highly useful to otolaryngology residents, practicing otologisst, and neurotologists. It is difficult to make direct comparisons to other temporal bone atlases because of the unique methods used to generate the illustrations. It is a high-quality book that provides some of the most detailed descriptions of temporal bone anatomy I have encountered and the imaging complements the text well.
